1. Take a unit of materials from a coursebook or from the web, decide upon a group of target learners and then make use of our suggested procedures in “The Principles and Procedures of Materials Evaluation that We Recommend” above to:

r

develop 10 universal criteria;

r

develop five local criteria;

r

use your universal and local criteria to conduct an evaluation of the unit.

2. Set yourself a mini-materials development task (e.g. a reading activity for a specific class). Before starting to develop the materials:

r

revise your ten universal criteria from Task 1 above;

r

develop five local criteria;

r

use your universal and local criteria to develop, monitor and revise your materials;

r

if possible, devise a focused whilst-use evaluation instrument and use it to evaluate your materials while they are being used;

r

if possible, devise a post-use evaluation instrument and use it to evaluate your materials after they have been used.
