4.1.2 The Man of Deed
As it explained by Jung that “the man of deed” means that a woman focuses her strength upon a particular goal. In that case, the writer also found another scene that is related to Bronwyn’s masculinity which in this case is shown when she and other peculiars children, including Jacob (the main character of the story) decided to leave their time loop and entering another dimension to investigate whether the monsters (hollows) are entering the village or not. As they are investigating, they found a house where the door is opened which seems someone is opening the door by force.
In their curiosity, they decided to check the house and it turns out they found a dead body, an old man who also one of villagers that greets Jacob when he is entering the village. Jacob then asking Enoch to investigate the body to find out the cause of his dead. Unfortunately, when they are trying to investigate the dead body, hollow come to the room and ambush them.
In this situation, Enoch and some peculiars children feel the tense and causing some of them in panic. However, even though the situation seems getting worse,
22
Bronwyn does not seem looks scared at all, she remains calm and prepare to fight, as it can be seen from the quotation below:
“Ah,” he said, “but you already have helped me.” He began to back toward the door. “It’s a pity we won’t have any more sessions together, Jacob. Though it isn’t a total loss, I suppose.
The four of you together might be enough to finally shift old Malthus out of the debased form he’s been stuck in so long.”
“Oh, no,” Enoch whimpered, “I don’t want to be eaten!”
“Don’t cry, it’s degrading,” snapped Bronwyn. “We’ll just have to kill them, that’s all.”
…
The others couldn’t see it in the way I did but recognized its shadow projected on the wall and that of its rope like tongues.
Emma flexed her arm, and her flame burned brighter. “What’s it doing?” she whispered. “Why hasn’t it come at us?” “It’s playing with us,” I said. “It knows we’re trapped.”
“We ain’t any such thing,” Bronwyn muttered. “Just gimme one square go at its face. I’ll punch its bloody teeth in.”
(Riggs, 2016: 206)
The quotation above shows the situation where the peculiars are ambushed by hollows and Enoch looks panic by saying “I don’t want to be eaten!”. However, unlike Enoch, Bronwyn keep calm and she even prepared herself to fight the monster which in this case, it can be noticed when Bronwyn says, “We’ll just have to kill them, that’s all.” Here, the scene shows another characteristic of animus which is known as “the man of deed” by Bronwyn. As it is explained by Jung that
“the man of deed” means that a woman focuses her strength upon a particular goal where in this case, Bronwyn is showing her strong will and physical strength in order to fight hollows.
Here, the writer is recognizing the unusual condition of Bronwyn as a girl (female character). Although literally she is not an ordinary child (one of peculiars), but the thing that makes her different is not only her super strength ability, but also her braveness even when she is being cornered and there are other people who panic in a room. Furthermore, the act of animus of Bronwyn is also can be noticed from other quotation and one of them can be seen as follow:
And then Bronwyn launched herself toward the creature, howling like a banshee. The creature shrieked and reared up, its bunched skin pulling tight. Just as it was about to lash its trident of tongues at her, she rammed Martin’s ice trough with the full weight of her body and levered her arms under it as it tipped and then heaved it and the whole huge thing, full of ice and fish and Martin’s body, careened through the air and fell upon the hollow with a terrific crash.
Bronwyn spun and bounded back in our direction.
“MOVE!” she cried, and I leapt away as she collided with the wall beside me, kicking a hole through the rotten planks.
(Riggs, 2016: 207)
The quotation above is the scene where Bronwyn is fighting the hollow. In this storyline, the writer noticed that only Bronwyn herself who brave and insane enough to start pick a fight with the monster while the main character, Jacob is pointing where the hollow exists. Here, the writer considers that the characteristic of animus of Bronwyn is also categorized as “the man of deed” since in this situation, she is showing her braveness by fighting the hollow with her bare hands.
As it mentioned by Jung, “the man of deed” means that a woman is focusing her physical strength or her strength of will upon a particular goal. In accordance, regarding to the situation from the quotation above, Bronwyn is focusing her physical strength in order to fight the hollow that is trying to kill her and other

peculiars. In addition, the writer also found another bravery act from Bronwyn that is noticed from this quotation:
Emma looked worried. “I haven’t a clue. But whatever it is, she’d better hurry.” I looked down to see what Bronwyn was doing but instead caught a glimpse of Millard on the ladder below us, surrounded by curious flashlight fish. Then I felt the hull vibrate against my feet, and a moment later Bronwyn surfaced holding a rectangular piece of metal about six feet by four, with a riveted round hole in the top. She had wrenched the cargo hold’s door from its hinges.
“And what are you going to do with that?” Emma said.
“Go to the lighthouse,” she replied. Then she stood up and held the door in front of her.
“Wyn, he’ll shoot you!” Emma cried, and then a shot rang out—and caromed right off the door.
“That’s amazing!” I said. “It’s a shield!”
Emma laughed. “Wyn, you’re a genius!”
“Millard can ride my back,” she said. “The rest of you, fall in behind.”
(Riggs, 2016: 209)
The quotation is the scene where the peculiars children are trying to save Miss Peregrine and Miss Avocet who at that time is in the form of bird (since they are ymbrynes) from Golan, hollow who infiltrates inside the time loop. Regarding to the situation, Golan is taking Miss Peregrine to the lighthouse where he is also waiting for his accompany to pick him up. In that case, it makes Golan cannot go anywhere and he is cornered by the peculiars.
However, even when Golan is cornered, he armed himself with gun and start shooting whoever comes nearby. In that case, the peculiars do not know what to do, so it triggers Bronwyn to have another crazy idea just like when she just directly
attacked hollow, only this time, her plan even smarter. Bronwyn simply remove a metal door from nowhere and make it as shield so that she and others are able to cover behind that metal door and approach Golan to save the hostage. Here, the writer noticed that the characteristic of animus that is reflected by Bronwyn is “the man of deed”. As it explained by Jung that “the man of deed” means that a woman is focusing her physical strength or her strength of will upon a particular goal. Thus, the situation shows that Bronwyn is showing that her physical strength is used to achieve particular goal which in this case, the goal of Bronwyn is to save those ymbrynes from Golan.
As it seen from the quotation, “Millard can ride my back,” she said. “The rest of you, fall in behind.”, it seems that Bronwyn is not only a girl with super physical strength, but she is also like a natural leader. The writer noticed when Bronwyn can fix the situation when everything is unexpected and able to lead other peculiars to follow her lead. Afterwards, another animus personality of Bronwyn that is showing her brutal and aggressive power can be seen from the quotation as follow:
“Rush him!” Bronwyn said. “He won’t know what to do.
But if it’s going to work we’ve got to go NOW!”
And before we had a chance to weigh in, Bronwyn was running toward the lighthouse.
We had no choice but to follow—she was carrying our protection, after all—and a moment later bullets were clanging against the door and chipping at the rocks around our feet.
It was like hanging from the back of a speeding train.
Bronwyn was terrifying: She bellowed like a barbarian, the veins in her neck bulging, with Millard’s blood smeared all over her arms and back. I was very glad, in that moment, not to be on the other side of the door.
As we neared the lighthouse, Bronwyn shouted, “Get behind the wall!” Emma and I grabbed Millard and cut left to take cover behind the far side of the lighthouse. As
26
we ran, I saw Bronwyn lift the door above her head and hurl it toward Golan.
There was a thunderous crash quickly followed by a scream, and moments later Bronwyn joined us behind the wall, flushed and panting.
“I think I hit him!” she said excitedly.
(Riggs, 2016: 316)
On the quotation above, the situation shows that peculiars are succeeded reach to the lighthouse in order to corner Barron, the hollow creature who captives Miss Peregrine and Miss Avocet as hostages. Here, again, Bronwyn is showing her animus personality that is known as “the man of deed”. Since “the man of deed”
means that a woman is focusing her physical strength or her strength of will upon a particular goal, the scene above assisted that Bronwyn is focusing her strength in order to defeat and cornered Golan. As it seen from the sentence, “As we ran, I saw Bronwyn lift the door above her head and hurl it toward Golan.”, it can be noticed that Bronwyn is not only showing her super physical strength, but she is also focusing it to defeat the hollow.
