foregoing tedious survey reveals a closet of dry bones inwhich there survives an emaciated creature having promise for the future, but of little value inthe battle of the

Estimates have been piled on estimatesand added

If, however, the data of table 3 are examined, the elapsed time to the St.Johnsbury
moraine has been estimated bysomewhat

figure, but as it has a magnitude ofmore
than a third, or, at least, a fourth ofany
one of the totals, it affectsthem
all toan almost dominating extent.Antevs' estimates of 1931 are obviously
improved
over those of 1928, largely because of the adjustment for the life ofLake Algon-
quin, based
on
thehistory of Niagara Falls.His
estimate of 25,000±
years for the St.
Johnsbury
morainemay
eventually be reduced, as indicated incolumn

the dates of theNorth American
chronology arecompared
with those of Europe, the concordance is not as close as could be desired. Itis obvious thatnone
of the existing estimates,however
in- genious, or basedon however much
laborious work, is as yet so close to the true figure that itmust
be accepted without qualification. In truth,we
have not yet arrived at such a stage in researchon
the Pleistocene.The
figures givenare merely first approximationswhich
withsome
confidencemay
be considered of the correct order of magnitude.They may
be received with respect, but the inherent errors are so great that the figures in yearsmust
be considered merely as indicators of relative age, rather than true figures.They
are pegs
on which
tohang
ideas.If
we
consider the errors of the several dates, theamount
of error varies. Thus, the length of the Post-glacial restson
the incompletely publishedwork
of Liden, butit hasbeen checkedas to relativelengths of theintervalsby
archeologicalmeans
as farbackas theAncylus and
Litorina stages. Also,many
pollen analytical studies have beenmade which
reach back into the Gothiglacial substage.These
studies con- firm the orderand
general relative length of the substages of theyounger
Late-glacialand
Post-glacial substages.The
errorin estima- tion of the length of the Post-glacial substage is probably smalland
its true length is neither longer nor shorter
by more
than lo percent.As
the Fenniglacial period has beenmeasured
both inSweden and
in Finlandby
varve counts,which
agree within loo years, the error inthelengthof this period is so small thatthe totalerror in the elapsed time to the present is no greater than that involved in using themuch
longer Post-glacial interval.However,
the length of the Gothiglacial is not so well-determinedand
an estimate of 2,500 years for this time interval is subject to errorof asmuch
as500
years,and
in fact, 3,000years is acceptedby many
workers. Furthermore, the length of the Daniglacial is un- controlledby
varve countsand
is a pure estimate.The
date given inEurope
for thePomeranian
moraine depends largelyon
the length of time assigned to the Daniglacial. It is likely that Antevs' date for the St.Johnsbury
ismore
nearly correct.Assuming,
therefore, 25,000 years as the elapsed time since thePomeranian,
this estimatemay
betoo largeby
25 percent, or too smallby
asmuch
as30
percent.Estimates of the elapsed time to the
Brandenburg moraine
