RECORDS OF MALLOPHAGA FROM PACIFIC BIRDS

INTRODUCTION

The P a c i f i c Ocean B i o l o g i c a l Survey Program (POBSP) of t h e

Smithsonian I n s t i t u t i o n made 1,693 Mallophaga c o l l e c t i o n s from 66 b i r d s p e c i e s on 25 i s l a n d s and a t s e a i n t h e C e n t r a l , Northern and

Southeastern P a c i f i c from 1963 through 1969. This p a p e r p r e s e n t s a l i s t i n g of t h e h o s t s , t h e Mallophaga, and t h e c o l l e c t i o n l o c a l i t i e s .

The 66 h o s t s p e c i e s belong t o 5 o r d e r s and 1 3 f a m i l i e s of s e a , shore, and land b i r d s . From t h e s e h o s t s were c o l l e c t e d 96 Mallophaga s p e c i e s , belonging t o 2 s u b o r d e r s , 2 f a m i l i e s , and 26 genera.

Several sources were used i n assembling t h e common and s c i e n t i f i c names of t h e b i r d h o s t s . The names used i n t h e American O r n i t h o l o g i s t s 1 Union's C h e c k l i s t of North American Birds, 1957, 5 t h e d i t i o n , were

followed f o r s p e c i e s o c c u r r i n g i n North America. S e a b i r d names agree with t h o s e which appear i n Watson (1966) and King (1967). Taxonomic o r d e r follows t h a t of P e t e r s (1931, 1934, and 1937) w i t h t h e exception of t h e P r o c e l l a r i i f o r m e s , which follow Alexander - - e t a l . (1965), t h e Anseriformes, which follow Delacour (1954, 1959), and t h e Charadriiformes, which f o l l o w Bock (1958).

Mallophaga c l a s s i f i c a t i o n follows t h a t of Hopkins and Clay (1952 and 1955), Emerson (1962, 1964a, and 1964b), and Ryan and P r i c e (1969a and 1969b).
