Among-
the birds obtained inthe course of theSmithsonian
Bio- logicalSurvey
ofPanama
' are28kingfishers of the Ceryleamericana group.Comparison
of tliis large series,and examination
of the birdsfrom numerous
localitiesinnorthernSouth America and
within thewide
distribution area(Panama
to southernUnited
States) originally assigned to Ceryle septentrionalis Sharpe, show
thattwo well-marked
raceshave
been unitedunder
thisname. One
of these rangesnorthward through Panama,
Costa Rica, Nicaragua,and Honduras
toGuatemala,
passing thenceintotheform which
reaches the southern border of theUnited

reply toyours respecting Ceryle septentrionalis Sharpe, Ihave much
pleasure in saying that the types of the original descriptions of themale and

given,by D. W.

therefore be accepted as the type locality of C. a. septentrionalis.Fortunately this locality is within thegeographic rangeof the
most
northernform
of the group, so that thename
is well applied. This disposal of C. a. septentrionalis leaves the hitherto unsepa- rated
form
of the southern partofMiddle America
without aname.
