Bahama Expedition

of the

Geo-

graphical Society" of

Baltimore, Mr.

J.

H. Riley obtained four specimens

of a nataline bat easily distinguishable

from

the species hitherto

known. They were taken

ina

cave near Sandy

Point, atthe

southwest corner

of

Watlings

Island.

The animal

may be known

as:

Chilonatalus tumidifrons, sp. nov.

Type.

Adult

male

Characters.

— Not

assmall as Chilonatalusmicropus

and

C.brevimanuSi but forearmofaboutthe

same

lengthas inthe relatedspecies. Frontal gland extending from middleof forehead nearlyto end of muzzle,

and

rising 5

mm.

abovelevelof eye. Skulland teethessentiallyasin Chilo- natalus micropus,but.essdiminutiveinsize.

Externalform.

Except fortheslightdifferenceinsize,the external ap- pearance ofChilonatalus tumidifrons is closelysimilarto that of C. mi- cropus.

The

forearm, however, is relatively shorter,

and

the ears are

more

evenly roundedoffabove. Lips

cies, exceptthat projectionabovenostrilsisnarrower. Penis less than half as long as foot,

and

readilyconcealed

by

surroundingfur.

Mem-

peculiar. Frontalglandat leastfourtimesaslarge as in CJtilonatalusmicropus,

much

longer

and

higher thanwide. Itextends from a point

on

foreheadnearlylevelwithmiddleof proencephalonto within3

mm.

ofnostril, adistanceof about 8

mm.

Itsgreatest width

is3.8

mm.; and

itsheight,

measured from

cornerof eye is a little over 5

mm.

Itssurfaceisfinelyrugose,

and naked

exceptfora sprinkling of

minute

hairs.

Color.

— The

furiseverywherecream-buff, that of the bellyclear

and unmixed

with brown, that of the

back

clouded with broccoli-brown.

Ears light yellowishbrown, darkening at edges.

Membranes

dark brown.

Skull

and

teeth.

Except

fortheir greatersizethe skull

and

teeth

do

notdifferappreciably fromthoseof Chilonatalus micropus.
