RETICULITERMES 107 margin, the ultimate nervesslightlyelevated, irregularly reticulate;peduncles terminal, solitary, 2.5 cm. long, the involucre entire, 3 nmi. high; calyx inbud
1 cm. long.Type
in theHerbarium
of the Trindad Botanic Garden, collected onMt.
Tocuche, Trinidad, June 21, 1907,
by
William Leshe (no. 9363).Whilethis
may
be only aform of U. clusiaefolia, theshapeofthe leaves isstrikingly different,
and
it is probable that the present plant is specifically distinct. Flowering specimens of both are a desideratum.ENTO]MOLOGY.

Reticulitermes
Holmgren was
established in 1913 asa subgenus
of thegenus
Lencotermes Silvestri.N. Banks,
in 1920, raised Reticiul- termes to generic rank. Iam adopting
the generic value given thisgenus by Banks, although
Iam
doubtful as towhether
Reticulitermescan be
considered ofgenericrank. IplaceReticulitermes inthefamily Rhinotermitidae, since the specieshave protozoa (Trichonympha)
in the gutsand
subcordatepronota which would
excludethem from
the family Termitidaewhere
placedby Banks.
Species of
both
the genera Leucotermesand
Reticulitermes are ex- tremely destructive totimber and
otherwoodwork. Winged
adults of species of Reticulitermes aredark
colored,with
thewings
strongly reticulated,but with few
hairs ormarginal
cilia;they
are species of relativelynorthern
distribution, the centre ofdistributionbeingNorth America.
SpeciesofLeucotermesare lighter colored,have
themargins
of thewings
ciliateand
are of relatively southern distribution. Ihave
recently revised this genus.Only two
species of Reticulitermes areknown from
the Orient;these eastern species are R. speratus
Kolbe and
R. flavicepsOshima, both
beingfrom
Japan.The new
species tobe
described isfrom
China.ReticuHtermes chinensis, sp. nov.

Antennae grey-brown with tips of segments whitish, 17-18 segments, pubescent; first segment clavate, elongate; second cylindrical, shorter;
