A NEW SHIPWORM FROM PANAMA
By PAUL BARTSCH
Curator, Divisions of Molhisks and Cenozoic Invertebrates, U. S. National Mnscnni
(WiiH One
Plate)In a sending" of mollusks received
from
Dr.James
Zetek for determination, there is a remarkablenew shipworm,
second in size of theAmerican shipworms
only toBankia
(Nausitoria) dryas Dall.I take pleasure in bestowing the
name
of the discovererupon
this species.BANKIA (NAUSITORIA) JAMESI,
new speciesPlate I
Shell very large, subglobular, color of the anterior
and
anteriormedian
exterior parts pale rose,where
not stained with rust color;
the rest rust-colored.
The
anterior part is provided with the usual sinusand
reflected callus; the latter is separatedfrom
the denticle- bearing partby
an impressedgroove.The
anteriorpartbears47finely denticulated dental ridges,which
aremuch more
distantly spacedon
the early partthanon
thelater.The
individualdenticles areseparated by deep grooves on each side of the dental ridges. The
dental ridges of the anteriormedian
part join those of the anterior part almost at right angles; they are separatedby
amere
impressed line,and
bear largeand
broad denticles.There
are 36 of these dental ridges in the line continuing the basalmargins
of the anterior part.The
middle portion of themedian
part is comparativelynarrow and
slightlycon- caveand
rather rough, while the posterior portion of themedian
partis broad, convex,
and marked by
incremental lines.The
posterior part forms a semioval auricle. The
interior is white.The umbones,
though badly eroded, bear a strongknob from which
a slender, thin,narrow
blade extends almost to the basal knob. The
suture, joining the anteriorand median
part, is thickenedand somewhat
rough.The
middle of themedian
part is impressed, rough,and
bears at its basal extremity a strongrounded
knob.The
posterior part extends over themedian
as a shelfand
is transversely flutedon
its outer half.The
pallets are very large; the stalk is very long and cylindrical; theSmithsonian Miscellaneous Collections, Vol. 99, No. 21

blade is plumelike, wider on one side than the other, covered
on
the outsideby
a strong periostracum.Where
the outer layer is broken away, the elementscomposing
the bladebecome
apparent.These might
be said tobe pygostyled fused joints. The
type,U.S.N.M. No.
513762,was
collectedby James
Zetek at Balboa near thedrydock
in waters of theBay
ofPanama.

sures: Height, 12.2mm.;
length, 12.0mm.

pallets measure: Length, 36.0

21mm.
belong to the stalk; greatest diameter, 5.0mm.
The
species ismost
nearly related toBankia
(Nausitoria) dryas Dall. It is readily differentiatedfrom
thatby
its smaller size, larger auricle, and, comparatively speaking, larger pallets.SMITHSONIAN MISCELLANEOUS COLLECTIONS VOL. 99. NO. 21, PL. 1
