Alhamdulillah, all praises to Allah, the only power, the Lord of the universe, Master of the judgment day, God almighty, for all blessings and mercy so that the researcher was able to this thesis titled “The Correlation between Students' critical thinking and their ability to write analytical expository text (The study of fourth semester students of English study program at State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Bengkulu at Academic Year.

Background of the Research

Presenting facts and opinions in analytical expository writing requires critical thinking from the writer. Based on the above findings, the researcher attempted to conduct this research on critical thinking and writing skill of analytical expository text.

Identification of the problem

Based on the above theoretical thinking, it can be seen that the ability to think critically has a connection with the ability to write analytical expository texts.

Limitation of the Problem

Nevertheless, these issues will be limited in terms of the relationship between students' critical thinking and their writeability of analytical expositions.

Significance of the Research

The result of this research will show the students, especially the students of the fourth semester of the English Study Program at the Islamic State Institute Bengkulu in the academic year 209/2020, the information in terms of their critical thinking about the ability of their of writing analytical expository text. The results will give them more information about students' critical thinking and factors in analytical expository text writing.

Definition of Key Terms

The result of this research will be useful for other researchers who will conduct research in the same field. Writing is an activity that aims to observe a writer's knowledge and feeling about something, which then communicates the result to its readers.11 Analytical expository text is a type of text that clearly focuses students on the purpose of argumentation; that is, presenting a point of view and providing evidence to support it.12.

LITERATURE REVIEW

Definition of Writing Ability

Writing is a complete process that involves writers to think critically by expressing their thoughts in written form. Then writing is also a skill that can be learned and developed through practice, which means "the more often you write, the better the ability to write".

Critical thinking can be considered a complex activity as it involves many aspects that need to be considered. Meanwhile, states Cottrell, critical thinking is defined as "a cognitive activity, associated with the use of the mind".25 This can be concluded. From this we can see that critical thinking is a form of assessment, especially assessment that is purposeful and reflective.

In conclusion, the ability to think critically is definitely useful for many aspects of a person's life, such as education, workplace, political and social life. The purpose of assessing critical thinking is to determine the extent to which students are trained in critical thinking. Adequate assessment of critical thinking is an appropriate tool for expressing individual thinking skills for courses or programs in many disciplines.

In conclusion, this research has some similarity with the previous study above, it is the same critical thinking ability and the differences is this research is focused on investigating the relationship between critical thinking and writing ability of analytical expository text. To find out if there is any significant relationship between critical thinking ability and writing ability. There is a significant relationship between students' critical thinking and analytical expository writing ability in the fourth semester of the English study program at the State Islamic Institute Bengkulu in the academic year 2019/2020.

This study is more focused on examining the correlation between critical thinking and writing skills of analytical exposition texts. Alternative hypothesis (H1): There is a relationship between students' critical thinking and the writing ability of the analytical exposition text of the . Null hypothesis (H0): There is no relationship between the critical thinking and writing ability of students of analytical exposition text of the fourth semester students of the English studies program at State Islamic Institute Bengkulu in academic year 2019/2020.

Descriptive statistics obtained from the score of critical thinking and writing ability of analytical outline text test. The normality distribution of critical thinking and writing ability of analytical expository text data was tested using SPSS software. In other words, the critical thinking data and writing ability of analytical expository text data are normally distributed.

However, inconsistencies are the result of the critical thinking and writing skills of analytical exposition text data set found. This means that there is a correlation between the students' critical thinking and writing ability in analytical expository text. There was a significant correlation between the students' critical thinking and writing ability of analytical expository text.

RESULT AND DISCUSSION

Critical Thinking

Writing Ability of Analytical Exposition Text

Another research was conducted by Ahmad Sugianto “The Relationship between Critical Thinking Ability and Writing Ability (A Correlational Study of State Islamic Sixth Semester Students). There is a significant relationship between students' critical thinking ability and students' writing ability English Education Department UIN Jakarta According to Cohen and others, the test is the subject of item analysis.48 In this research, tests were conducted to measure critical thinking and writing ability of analytical explanation text.

The writing skills test in analytical exposition text is given at the same time as the question of the critical thinking test. In this study, after collecting data on students' critical thinking and writing skills in analytical statements, the scores of the two tests are analyzed to determine whether or not there is a correlation between the two variables in this study. Research Hypothesis (H1): There is a relationship between the critical thinking and writing ability of students of analytical exposition texts of the fourth semester students of the English studies program at State Islamic Institute Bengkulu in academic year 2019/2020.

In this case, the most frequent score (Mode) of critical thinking data is found to be 75. In this research, the researcher created a frequency distribution to summarize the data of students' critical thinking scores.

The scatter diagram in Figure 4.3 above reveals that the ability to think critically and write analytical presentation text are usually linear, as the dots in this diagram show the indication as a linear line. Furthermore, we can conclude that there is a positive relationship between critical thinking and analytical expository writing ability, as the dots in this scatter diagram show that the data starts from the lower left side to the upper right side of the diagram. In other words, the ability to write an analytical presentation textual data set is normally distributed.

This means that there is no correlation between the students' critical thinking and writing ability in analytical expository text. It is interpreted that ho is rejected, which means that there is a connection between the students' critical thinking and writing ability in analytical expository text. This means that the contribution of X or the students' critical thinking is 74% to Y or the students' writing ability in analytical expository text.

Discussions

Additionally, based on the calculation of coefficient of determination (R), critical thinking contributes 74% to analytical expository writing ability. Based on the table of r score interpretation in table 3.4, that the students' critical thinking has a moderate (medium) correlation with their ability to write analytical expository text. In this research, it was confirmed that students' analytical expository writing ability is determined by their critical thinking skills.

Therefore, it is justified that this research can indicate that the ability to write an analytical expository text needs critical thinking. In conclusion, based on the data analysis, the researcher found that students' critical thinking and the ability to write an analytical presentation text are fairly interrelated. Finally, this research showed that there is a significant relationship between students' critical thinking and analytical presentation text writing ability of fourth semester students of IAIN Bengkulu.

Limitations

With the research question "to find out whether or not there is any significant relationship between critical thinking ability and writing ability" there is similarity with this research, where the same is equal in positive correlation between the variables. Nader Assadi, HaniefDavatgar, and ParinazJafari (2013) with the research question "to find out if critical thinking has effects on students' writing" so there are differences with this research, where in this research is finding the correlation between variables, while in Nader's research , Hanief and Parinaz is to find the effect on the variables. It means that the result showed that there was a positive and significant correlation between students' critical thinking and analytical expository writing ability.

It means that the higher the critical thinking, the higher the writing skills and the lower the critical thinking, the lower the writing skills. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the critical thinking of the students has a dominant effect on the writing ability of analytical expositions. The findings of this study prove that there is a moderate relationship between critical thinking and the ability to write analytical expositions.
