Dr. Bartsch first described the nocturnal
mating
habits ofLimax
maximiis, a
common
garden slug, illustrating the successive acts withphotographs
takenby
flash-light.The
slugs,which
are bi-sexual, climb trees atnight; apair will twist themselves together, spin amucous
thread,
and hang
suspended.The
genitalia are protruded,and
afterexchange
of products,accompanied by
characteristic activities, the pair ascend the threadand
retire to their usual retreatswhere
the eggs are deposited.Some
vears ago, Dr. Bartsch continued, anumber
of aninfals of this specieswhich were under
observation in hishome,
escapedfrom
theirbox
inwhich
theyhad been
confined. Observationson
their behavior in the furnaceroom were
recalledwhen need
fora
gas detector arose in connection with the great war.A
very brief period of experimentation revealed the extraordinary sensitiveness ofLimax maximus
tomustard
gas,
and
inan
incredibly short time the information, invaluable for detecting the gas,was
in thehands
of the Alliesand American
forces in Europe.The
tentacles ofLimax
are sensitive to a dilution of i to 10,000,000 ofmustard
gas,and
characteristic responses indicate the degree of dilution. vSinceman
reacts at a dilution of i to 4,000,000,Limax
proves tohave ample margin
of delicacy.Moreover
the speciesis
European,
and.abundant
in the region of the fighting.Dr. Bartsch pointedout
how
incidental,even
accidental, observations years ago furnishedimmediate answer
to theproblem
calling for reliable sensitive detectors of certain gases during the war.The paper was
