The objective of the research are to find out the kind of errors and the dominant errors of using preposition in writing descriptive text. The error modification in this study was divided into three categories; they are omission, insertion, and selection.

This research was descriptive research which used the mixed method. It was the combination between quantitative and qualitative method with the subject was SMA Negeri 1 Barru at the tenth grade students in the academic year 2015/2016 which consisted of 34 students. The instrument used for analyzing the students’ error of using preposition in writing descriptive text by written test.

The finding of this research showed that there were three types of error made by students, namely: Omission, insertion, and selection. Each type had error percentage; 36.3% error of omission, 19% error of insertion, and 44.7% error of selection. The most dominant error was selection. The total incorrect error was 121. It consisted of three types of errors, namely: 44 or 36.3% error of omission, 23 or 19% error of insertion, and 54 or 44.7% error of selection. From these findings, the researcher made conclusion that most of the students at the tenth grade of SMA Negeri 1 Barru did not understand about using preposition correctly in a sentence so that many errors was found in the students’ writing descriptive text.
