Academic Policies and Procedures Committee Minutes

Friday May 6, 2011

Minutes—Minutes of the Friday April 8, 2011 meeting were distributed electronically.

Information Items

 The Registrar has received requests for rooms for 136 new classes for the fall semester. The need for classrooms during specific times is exceeding the availability. As a result, some classes meeting during nonstandard times across prime time periods will be shifted to IUPUI off-campus locations.

Academic Affairs Committee ReportEric Wright, Chair

 Based on previous conversations at APPC, AAC will be reviewing the policies for probation, dismissal, academic forgiveness, and expanded-X grades -- particularly the calculation of the GPA for each. This will be a major agenda item for AAC next year.

 AAC reviewed the policy used by UC to limit the number of withdrawals that a student can use to determine if the policy should be adopted more widely. Based on the discussions and the limited data available on the impact of the policy due to its relatively recent adoption, AAC will review the expansion of the policy again in one year to determine if the policy should be adopted for all of IUPUI.

Items for Review, Discussion, or Action

Change of degree name from Bachelor of Science (no discipline specified in the degree name) to a Bachelor of Science in Forensic and Investigative Sciences (School of Science). The contact person is Jay Siegel [email protected].

See PDF document embedded below next item for the proposal.

The proposal received the support of the school’s Undergraduate Education Committee which acts on behalf of the faculty.

This change is endorsed by APPC.

Change of major name from Forensic and Investigative Sciences to Forensic and Investigate Science FEPAC Certified. This change reflects the recent accreditation of the degree by the Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Commission (FEPAC) of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. (School of Science). The contact person is Jay Siegel [email protected].

See PDF document embedded below for the proposal.

The proposal received the support of the school’s Undergraduate Education Committee which acts on behalf of the faculty.

Investigative Sciences name change 4 25 11.pdf

Questions were raised about the concept of including information on the certification or accreditation status of a program within the title of the major. Subsequent to the meeting, Joe Thompson provided information that there is a precedent in Chemistry.

 Degree and Transcript read: Bachelor of Science in Chemistry

 Major: Chemistry A.C.S. Certification

The request for forensics is:

 Degree and Transcript: Bachelor of Science in Forensic and Investigative Sciences

 Major: Forensic and Investigative Sciences F.E.P.A.C. Accreditation

As there is a precedent for this type of designation, the request will move forward.

Since majors in other schools are also accredited/certified, Mary Beth Myers is investigating alternatives to including this information in the name of the major. This information should be available for presentation at the September meeting.

Discussions between Science and Engineering and Technology occurred prior to the APPC meeting to address concerns of potential overlap.

Both CIT and Computer Science draw on theory and practice in the focus of their

disciplinary content, and it was widely acknowledged that there is some overlap between the programs.

The anticipated need for baccalaureate degreed individuals with a computing-oriented degree is forecasted to be 140,000 in the coming years; however, the present pipeline is poised to only produce approximately 40,000 baccalaureate degreed individuals

Both CIT and Computer Science acknowledge the need to broaden the student population interested in pursuing some form of computing-related education (baccalaureate, minor, or certificate)

In concert with Computer Graphics Technology and Informatics, both CIT and Computer

Science would like to position IUPUI to be a major player in this arena; this is especially

significant given the STEM focus of our campus, and it was acknowledged that each of

these programs—individually, collaboratively, and collectively—can play a critical role in

the “T” of STEM

E&T and Computer Science agreed on specific initiatives to enhance achievement of these goals.

Informatics requested additional time for faculty review of the proposal and discussions with Science.

 In order for these discussions to occur, action on the proposal will be deferred to the September APPC meeting.

Waitlist Reporting Project—Linda Hadley/Mary Beth Myers

Using a dashboard-type reporting tool, a project is underway to provide useful, up-to-date waitlist information so that academic units are informed and able to make good decisions on increasing enrollment in certain classes to place waitlisted students. The report includes such things as:

Lists of students waiting to get into a class along with those who are already enrolled in the class but trying to change “sections.”

Lists of students who will not be placed due to schedule time conflicts so there can be outreach to those students to assist them in best adjusting their schedules

Displays of the top ten waitlisted classes

Displays of the classes within a unit with the most students on the waitlist

And much more…………comments and suggestions for other useful information should be forwarded to Mary Beth Myers and/or Linda Hadley

Future Agenda Items

 “Waitlist Any” functionality—Mary Beth Myers

 Transcript information on accreditation/certification status—Mary Beth Myers

 B.A. in Applied Computer Science (School of Science)--Shiaofen Fang

 School of Liberal Arts

o BA in Health Studies and Medical Humanities—Bill Schneider

 Notification to students concerning possible cancellation of course due to low enrollment

 Dean’s Signature for Late Registrations –Mary Beth Myers

o Should we continue requiring the dean’s signature for late registrations beginning with the second week of classes or should this be changed to a requirement after auto W since during the last ¼ of the term we require the dean’s signature for everything. Requiring it early was INTENDED to assure that Deans’ were aware that students were registering late and thus not counted in official enrollment counts (heads and credit hours). It seems to now be just an unappreciated extra step for all involved.

This has been a practice, not a policy, so APPC seems the correct venue for any approved change.
