CHAPTER II DISSCUSION

A. Definition Feminism

Talking about feminism means talking about ideology, not discourse. The essence of feminism is resistance, anti, and freedom from oppression, domination, hegemony,

injustice, and violence. The specialty of feminism is to fight oppression. This resistance is pursued in various ways or actions. Because it is against oppression, this resistance must begin with critical awareness and self-organization. With women’s eyes, heart and actions, that is that she realizes, sees, experiences the oppression that happens to women,

wondering it, sues and takes action to change these conditions. Feminism thus stands for women, on those who are oppressed, discriminated against, exploited, and neglected.

Feminism dismantles the experience of oppression as women, questions the power relations that take place in women. Feminism fights for the humanity of women, fights for women as independent human beings towards structuring new social relations in which women are equal to men as complete subjects in making decisions in allocation of power and resources. This change does not come by itself but must be fought for.

B. The History of Feminism

In the early 17th century the term feminism began to be used, its meaning understood in the context of that time, rooted in political analysis in the 1970s. In the book

Encyclopedia of Feminism, written by Lisa Tutle, 1986, feminism or English: feminism, comes from the Latin word femina: woman and literally means 'having qualities of femals'. It has been agreed that feminism as a term was first used in the 17th century in England, according to Kumari Jayawardena (1986). In the book 'Feminism and

Nationalism in the Third World (1986)' Kumari describes that the discussion on women's rights and education had taken place in China in the 18th century and that in the 19th and early 20th centuries there were feminist struggles in India, Iran, Turkey, Egypt. , Japan, Korea, Philippines, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Indonesia.

C. The Diversity of Feminism Thoughts

1. Liberal feminism, which holds that the cause of women's oppression is due to lack of opportunity and education both individually and in groups.

2. Marxist feminism, argues that the oppression of women stems from private ownership of wealth and a capitalist system that creates inequality in which men dominate and have a high position that benefits from the socio-economic order.

3. Radical feminism, which argues that women are oppressed by patriarchal social systems, is the most fundamental form of oppression in life.

4. Socialist feminism, which views that racial oppression women occur because of the patriarchal system and the inner class system public.

5. Cultural feminism, which focuses more on femininity as a necessary form of human treatment.

6. Post-structural feminism, which focuses more on ways to solve individual problems such as economic discrimination that causes women to be oppressed.

7. Theological feminism, it originates from theology that developed in the 1960s with the main character James Cone. This theory assumes that the oppression of women in religious societies is rooted in religious norms which are interpreted using a patriarchal methodology that corners women, then theological feminists interpret it using the ideology of equality.

8. Ecofeminism is a theory that sees individuals more comprehensively, namely as beings who are bound and interact with their environment.
