INTRODUCTION

Background

According to Pranoto, writing means pouring thoughts into a written form or telling something to others through writing and according to Semi, M.A writing is a creative process of transferring ideas into writing symbols. English grammar is a set of structured rules that govern English sentences, phrases and words. on understanding grammar as follows according to Greenbaum, its grammatical units are words, phrases, clauses and sentences. 2003) argue that grammar is a person's ability to follow language rules that refer to the rules of word use and sentence structure.

Based on the above definition, the researcher can conclude that grammar is a group that regulates or changes the part of a composition to overcome various types of meanings and arrange sentences. The discussion of grammar is inseparable from the phrase as for the understanding of phrase according to experts including according to Suherman (2017: 2) phrase is a series of words but not pattern S + V. Based on all these facts, this research will focus on the use of adjective phrases in writing, so on this occasion the researcher will analyze structural adjective phrases through English writing made by the eleventh grade at SMAN 1 Nunukan Selatan, then the researcher will student problems about the use of adjective phrases in writing discussed.

Problem statement

If students do not understand grammar well, their writing will automatically cause misunderstandings to readers because readers cannot receive messages or information from their ideas, by learning English, students must be able to master and apply sentence structures correctly, especially in the use of ​​sentential adjectives by writing English text.

Framework

The findings of the research refer to the answer to the research question about students' difficulties in writing adjective phrases in English text. Students' difficulties in writing adjective phrases in English text in eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Nunukan Selatan. According to the results of student writing, the researchers found that there are still many students who have difficulty in writing about the use of adjective phrases in writing English text.

The students' level of difficulty is based on the types of adjectives that the researcher has described in the table below as follows: Based on the students' answers to questionnaire number two asking 'Do you know the structure of the adjectival sentence. Based on student responses to Questionnaire Number Three asking 'Do you understand the use of adjectives in English text.

Based on the students' answers to questionnaire number five with the question "Does your mother tongue influence you to write adjective phrases in English. 6 Do you often use Indonesian language rules in your writing especially in writing adjective phrases in English text. In this case, did the students not understand the use of adjective phrases in English text.

The researcher can conclude that most students in grade XI IPA 3 often use Indonesian rules in writing, especially in writing adjective phrases. The researcher can conclude that most of the XI IPA 3 students did not like to write adjective phrases. The tenth point deals with whether students have enough knowledge to write adjective phrases in an English text.

The researcher concluded that most of the students answered that they did not have sufficient prior knowledge of adjective phrases. Based on data analysis, students' difficulties in using adjectival sentences to write English text by eleventh grade students in SMA 1 Nunukan Selatan. The results of the questionnaire show that there are factors that make it difficult for students to write adjectival sentences in writing.

This study provides an overview of students' difficulties in using adjectives when writing English texts in the first semester of the eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Nunukan Selatan, based on the results of the writing tests and questionnaires. The researcher used the questioner to find out what factors make students difficult when writing adjectives. The sixth item discusses whether students often use Indonesian rules when writing, especially when writing adjectives in English texts.

The researcher can conclude that most students of XI IPA 3 did not write adjective phrases regularly.

FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

Findings

The researcher conducted the research at SMAN 1 Nunukan Selatan in the first semester in the academic years 2020/2021. The object of this research was eleventh grade students in XI IPA 3 at SMAN 1 Nunukan Selatan. The research findings are based on the results of the written test and the answer to the research question.

In this research, the researcher used a writing test as a tool used in collecting data on students of class XI IPA 3. at SMAN 1 Nunukan Selatan, where students were asked to write an English text on the subject of my to write family members. Based on the results of the study, most students had problems with the use of adjective phrases, especially in interlingual and intralingual terms. Based on the table above, it can be concluded that as many as 87.23% experienced problems in the Intralingual Error section.

This is because many students experience overgeneralization, or the rules for adjective phrases that are not correct in writing adjective phrases in the English text, while 12.76% of students experienced difficulties with cross-linguistic errors which are caused by the influence of their mother tongue on the language intended. Based on the table above, it can be concluded that students encounter difficulties based on the types of adjective phrases, namely attributives up to 74.46% with a frequency of 35 items and predicate adjectives up to 25.53% with a frequency of 12 items . for the description can be seen in the appendix. Based on the questionnaire given by the researcher to the students which consisted of 10 questions to find out what factors have caused the students to have difficulty in writing adjective phrases.

Based on student responses number one of the questionnaires asking “Do you know what an adjective phrase is?” 31 students chose the answer “yes” with a percentage of 88.57% and 4. Discussion

Intralingual error is characterized by overgeneralization in using an imprecise adjectival phrase and incorrect use of structure in writing the adjectival phrase. Meanwhile, the difficulty of the adjectival sentence that the students rated the lowest was a predicative adjective. The researcher can conclude that most students of XI IPA 3 know what the adjectival sentence was.

The researcher can conclude that most of the XI IPA 3 students did not know the adjective phrase structure. The fifth point discusses whether students are influenced by their mother tongue when writing adjective phrases. It can be concluded that most of the students of grade XI IPA 3 were influenced by their mother tongue when writing adjective phrases.

The second knowledge and understanding, because the students had difficulties with the adjective phrase and there was an influence of the mother tongue with the understanding of the adjective phrase used. The student's written test showed that the students' difficulties in using adjective phrases in writing the text in English, namely 87.23% or 41 items, students had difficulties in intra-linguistic error, while 12.76% or 6 items students had difficulties in the interlingual error. According to the type of adjective phrase, there were 12 items or 25.53% of the students had difficulties in using predicate adjectives and 35 items or 74.46% of students had difficulties in using attributive adjectives.
