Methods A retrospective review of the compliance of an existing VAP package was conducted for all adult patients ventilated in the ICU of a large district general hospital in 2011. Intra-team conflicts (conflicts occurring between intensive care team members ) are one of the most frequent types of conflicts in the ICU. The purpose of this study is to review the experiences of the actors involved, namely care providers, patients and their families, with cultural diversity during the communication and decision-making process in the ICU.
Introduction The aim of the study was to prospectively assess the satisfaction of families in intensive care and to identify areas for possible improvement. Wall RJ et al.: Refinement, Scoring, and Validation of the Intensive Care Unit (FS-ICU) Family Satisfaction Survey. Introduction Patient satisfaction is an important determinant of the quality of care in the hospital environment.
The non-elective nature of hospitalization was also associated with a higher risk of death in the ICU (P < 0.0001) and in hospital (P < 0.0001). Introduction The goal of the ICU is to provide the best life-saving care to admitted patients in order to maintain and restore the patients' quality of life.
In most patients (13/16) the diagnosis of malignancy was made during the current admission and only three had malignancy for a longer period (5 months to 3 years). Conclusion Regardless of EWS, critical care teams are heavily involved in the management of patients outside critical care units. Results Fifty-one subjects with severe sepsis were included in the study; 37% of patients were obese (BMI >30).
The logistical EuroSCORE was a reasonable predictor of long-term ICU/. The relationship between a patient's logistic EuroSCORE and the predicted risk of prolonged ICU is shown in the figure; including low-risk, intermediate-risk, and high-risk groups. Rats in the treatment group were intravenously administered BMMNCs (1 x 107 cells in 1 ml phosphate buffered saline (PBS)) immediately after weight removal (BMMNC group) and the control group (CR group) was administered PBS alone. Conclusion When choosing the means of transmission, the time to contact with the patient is the most important factor.
Conclusion Violence in the ED may be a result of caregivers' high workload, which causes a delay in care. The purpose of this study is to test the utility of monitoring inflationary NIBP in the emergency department. It is based on an estimate of pulse pressure based on the velocity of the pulse wave, which is measured as the time delay between the R-wave of the ECG and the corresponding peripheral pulse wave detected by pulse oximetry – the delay is called the pulse wave transit time. (PWTT) [1].
Furthermore, only eight (11%) PPV calculations were found to be beneficial due to the use of low-tidal ventilation (4 to 6 mL/kg ideal body weight) in the remaining 10 patients.

Results Eighty-five patients (out of 300 examined) were enrolled in the study according to the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Results Ninety patients (out of 350 screened) were enrolled in the study according to the inclusion/exclusion criteria. The neurotransmitter acetylcholine (Ach) has been shown to play an important role in the inflammatory response.
However, the role of this enzyme in the inflammatory pathomechanism is not yet fully understood. Surprisingly, the observed reduction in BChE activity during systemic inflammation does not correlate with liver failure. Conclusion We observed a lower TCR diversity and lymphopenia in the early stages of septic shock.
Differential effect of alcohol on TNFα receptor II production in the presence of ex vivo LPS challenge. Methods Thirty consecutively admitted patients with SS, 22 with SIRS and 15 C participated in the study. Exploring the ex vivo immune response of elderly polytrauma patients in the ICU on admission: preliminary results.
Annane D, Bellissant E, Bollaert PE, et al: Corticosteroids for the treatment of severe sepsis and septic shock in adults: a systematic review. Results We identified 277 patients admitted to the intensive care unit within 48 hours of arrival at the emergency department. However, the delayed group was significantly lower risk stratified in the ICU based on their APACHE II score.
Identification of severe sepsis and risk assessment in the emergency department are critical to patient outcome. Method A web-based questionnaire was sent to the medical director of all adult intensive care units in the Netherlands. Introduction The aim of this study was to investigate current practice for the use of lung ultrasound (LUS) in the diagnosis of pneumothorax. The results of body position change in the individual patients were analyzed with paired-samples t-test. Respiratory drive and effort tend to be higher in the sitting position, but not significantly so.
Patients with a ≥10 mmHg decrease in PaCO2 in the first 72 hours were accepted as successful (Group 1) and those without this decrease were accepted as unsuccessful (Group 2). Results When we analyzed patients according to their body mass index (BMI), pH and pCO2 values for the patients with BMI ≤30 showed a greater improvement in all three measures in AVAPS compared with BIPAP (P <0.001). We hypothesized that tidal volumes (Vt) were smaller and applied positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) was higher in the Netherlands compared to the global cohort.
The aim of the study was to show the time-dependent changes in the induction of apoptosis due to mechanical overload, by fluorescence microscopic observations. Results The duration of mechanical ventilation and the death rate were significantly higher in patients with VAP(+). CPIS levels were also higher in patients with VAP(+) on the day of diagnosis.
There was no significant difference in GATA-3 expression between the groups at 24 hours and 48 hours. The location of the NICU and the site of isolation did not appear to correlate in the cluster analysis. Introduction Fluid therapy is a cornerstone in the management of patients with evolving acute kidney injury (AKI).
Myoglobin removal of small protein leaky membrane (EMIC2) in patients in the ICU: a case series. Results In the pre- and post-implementation questionnaire (response rate of 38% and 37% of the interviewed nurses respectively). The performance of the model in the original study [1] is reproduced in the first column.
Introduction Only a minority of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients receive cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) from bystanders. The PulsePoint smartphone application alerts users near cardiac arrest to enable immediate CPR of bystanders. The cardiac arrest (CA) group was dependent on the cause of CA: cardiac arrhythmias (n = 12), survival 50%; surgical etiology (non-traumatic), survival 50%, mean age 70;.
We recorded mean age, male-to-female ratio, cause of cardiac arrest, and ICU mortality. Mean initial cerebral saturation and time to start advanced life support in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest: are they correlated. We measured rSO2 during ALS in patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) and compared the average rSO2 in the first minute with the time between the emergency call (EC) and the onset of ALS.
Prediction of survival in patients admitted to the intensive care unit after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest using the Prognosis After Resuscitation score. Introduction Lack of standardized care contributes to low survival in hospitalized out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients. Introduction This retrospective audit evaluated adult patients who suffered in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) against the recent report of the National Confidential Inquiry into Patient Outcome and Death (NCEPOD) [1].
Knowledge and use of therapeutic hypothermia in cardiac arrest victims among health care personnel in Greece. The aim of this study was to investigate the knowledge of medical and nursing staff on the implementation of TH in patients after cardiac arrest [2]. After stimulation of whole blood with LPS, TNFα and IL-6 production was lower after cardiac arrest compared to healthy controls.
Plasma levels of IL-1RA, IL-8, and IL-10 were decreased after cardiac arrest compared with healthy controls. Conclusion The energy burden of chills is underestimated by standard nutritional formulas in patients undergoing TTM after cardiac arrest. Data collection was then undertaken after introduction of the protocol for all patients admitted to DCC after cardiac arrest in November 2012 to 2013 (Group 2).
