INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION
- Problem Identification
- Problem Limitation
- Problem Formulation
- Objective and Benefits of the Research 1. Objective of the Research
How the use of the PQ4R method can improve the reading comprehension of students in the eighth grade of SMPN 2 Metro. Based on the formulation of the above problem, the writer aimed to know if the PQ4R Method can improve the reading comprehension of students in the eighth grade of SMPN 2 Metro.
CHAPTER II
Concept of Reading Comprehension 1. The concept of Reading
- The Concept of Reading Comprehension
Based on the explanation above, the researcher can assume that reading comprehension is skill to make the reader's prior knowledge active to search for the meaning of the text to understand and to get all the new things we have read. To know what the achievement of reading comprehension should be measured, use the assessment of reading.
The Concept of PQ4R (Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite and Review) Method
- The Definition of PQ4R Method
- The Steps of PQ4R Method
- The Implementation of Teaching Reading Using PQ4R Method In teaching learning reading teachers need methods to keep In teaching learning reading teachers need methods to keep
- Advantages and Disadvantages of PQ4R method
Suprijono says that a person must have a stock of knowledge in reading skills and PQ4R method is one of the other ways to develop reading effectiveness.13 A good method can help students to increase their ability because it can attract their attention in reading activity. The basic for study technique like the PQ4R method (preview, question, read, reflect, recite, review), which instructs readers to ask questions, answer and reflect during their reading. Based on the statement above that PQ4R is a method used to help students understand, remember what they read and help the learning processing class with reading activities. To improve reading comprehension, we can choose method which is appropriate, and one of method is PQ4R method.
Quickly examine or scan the material to get an idea of general organization and major topics and subtopics. Try to understand and make sense of the information presented by (1) relating it to things you already know, (2) relating the subtopics of the text to primary concepts or principles, (3) trying to resolve contradictions in the information presented, and ( 4) attempt to use the material to solve problems suggested by the material. In the final step, actively review the material and reread the reading students when students are still unsure of the answers.
When teaching reading, teachers need methods to keep students motivated and able to understand the material they read, and one of the methods that effectively help students understand and remember the material they read is the PQ4R method. Opinions on the advantages and disadvantages of the PQ4R method, we can conclude that the excess used to review lessons can help students improve their reading comprehension of English text, improve skills and increase curiosity related to these subjects.
Action Hypothesis
- Independent Variable
- Dependent Variable
In this research, the writer will use the PQ4R method to observe the reading comprehension of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Metro. The dependent variable is the variable that is observed and measured to determine the effect of the independent variable. It can be defined as knowledge in identifying the text read to the students.
When students can answer all questions correctly, they will get 100 points, and when students cannot answer all questions correctly, they will get 0 points.

Research Procedure
- The Concept of Classroom Action Research
- Action Plan
The researcher explained the role of the teacher and students. role in teaching learning using the PQ4R method. Based on the observation, the researcher can determine if there is something that the researcher needs to improve soon so that the action can achieve the goal that the researcher wants. In this step, the researcher observed the teaching learning process using the form of observation.
With reflection, the researcher analyzed and discussed the results during the teaching of learning such as weaknesses and strengths made by the researcher and students during the learning process. In this step, the researcher observed the teaching learning process using the observation format to collect the data in action plan II. It is considered important for the researcher to improve the vocabulary of grade VIII.H students in SMP Negeri 2 Metro using the PQ4R method.
In conducting the research, the researcher collaborated with the real English teacher of SMP Negeri 2 Metro as an observer and collaborator. Here, the researcher is not only an observer but also took action by making the lesson plan and giving evaluation.
Data Collecting Technique
- Test
- Observation
- Documentation
English teacher who teaches reading comprehension to the students, while the actual English teacher's role is as an observer who observes the action of the study while teaching learning activities take place in the classroom. Also acts as a collaborator when it helps the research to design lesson plan, carry out the reflection and determine the follow-up of the study. This means that observation is a data collection strategy in which the activities of subjects are visually examined.
The research uses observation method to obtain complete data about the school profile, school condition, teachers and students and facilities in SMP Negeri 2 Metro. Observation will also be used to get information from the relative source of students in the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 2 Metro. The purpose of observation is to clarify the situation under investigation: the activities, people or individuals involved in the activity and the relationship between them.
Documentation is a method of collecting data by investigating the written object such as a book, magazine, document, note and others. Documentation is a way to get data from written language, including related book, rules, activity report, pictures, student reading test scores in.

Data Analysis Method
- The Analysis of Learning Result Data
In order to know the result, the researcher will also compare between pretest and posttest. If from cycle 1 there are some students who are not successful, then we complete cycle 2.
The Indicator of Success
Result of The Research
- Action and Learning at Pre-Test
- Action and Learning Activity in cycle 2
The researcher gave a pre-test to the students to see how far the student was with reading comprehension before the treatment was given. The researcher gave a pre-test to the students to see how far the student was with reading comprehension before the treatment was given. In addition, the researcher made an observation sheet consisting of a list of students' names and a list of student activities to be observed during the learning process.
The researcher then asked about their condition initially before the attendance checklist. The classroom condition was less effective because the collaborator handed over to the class to ensure that students were effective before the researcher conducted research in the classroom. Then, the researcher proposes the students to read a text, after that the researcher asked the students about the text.. do you understand about the text?”. Here the researcher was as a teacher and the English teacher as a collaborator observing the students' activities during the learning process.
In addition, the researcher created an observation sheet that consists of a list of students' names and a list of student activities that will be observed during the teaching process. The researcher found that the students had difficulty finding the main idea and completing the text. This means that the time is up and the researcher has finished the lesson and reminded the students to study the descriptive text again.
Based on the problem faced in the first cycle, the researcher made a lesson plan that focused on it, she also prepared observation sheet of the students.
Interpretation
- The Result of Pre Test
- Action and Learning Result at Cycle I
- Action and Learning Result at Cycle II
Nevertheless, there was an improvement point from the students' post-test 1 as a pre-test point. The repetition of students' completed score of pretest and posttest 1 point pretest to test 1 category. From the average mark of pre-test and post-test 1 above, it can be seen that there was an improvement in students' reading comprehension.
The recapitulation of students who have completed Post-Test 1 and Post-Test 2. Mark the Pre-Test Post-Test 1 category. The result of the students' pre-test, post test I and post test II Never Thales, there is an improvement in the students' grade after test I than pre-test. The recapitulation of the student's completed scores for post-test 1 and post-test 2. Mark pre-test post-test 1 post test 2 category.
The amount of the average of the student score at Pre-Test, Post-Test Cycle I, and Post-Test Cycle II. The result of the student activity in Cycle I&II No name Cycle 1 Cycle II.
Discussion
In connection with this research to II. of the cycle, the assessment of the result and the result of the students' activity was the goal achieved, which was decided on the indicator of success. 75% of the students got a minimum score of 75. Based on the results of this survey, it was known that more than 75% of the students got a minimum score of 75. So we can say that this survey was completed and there was no need to continue it in the next cycle.
Furthermore, the researcher used the PQ4R method, which could improve students' reading comprehension. Then, cycle I and cycle II students' reading comprehension improved because the researcher used the PQ4R method.
