Definition of the Key Terms
- Reading Comprehension
- Using Video Movie in the Classroom
- Students’ Participation
The structure of a story can be simple (e.g. there are few components and they are written in a predictable sequence) or complex (e.g. there are many components and their sequence is unpredictable). Because it includes statements such as, "From time to time I stop to think about what I am reading," the MARSI is a form of self-assessment. Video film is one form of media that teachers can use in their lessons.
Review of the Related Findings
Based on the research reviewed, we expect that students will be more willing to participate in classrooms where the teacher expresses enthusiasm for learning, communicates a belief that all students can learn, and provides academic and emotional support for student understanding. In addition, by Rammal (2006) he conducted a research entitled "video in EFL classrooms". The research concerned the creation of teaching materials to be implemented in the EFL classroom using video. The title of her research is improving students' interest and ability to write narrative text through video shows in class IX.1 SMPN 2 Pariaman.
As a result, most students are interested in studying narrative text because they can view the story directly. The title of her research is Improving Students' Speaking Skills on Transactional and Interpersonal Texts by Using Video in Group VIII.1 SMP N 1 Sungai Lasi, Solok. The studies have examined the use of video as a media in learning to read. It can be concluded that video is one of the media types that can be used to improve students' reading comprehension.
So, the researcher wants to use the video film as a way to solve her problem in the classroom regarding students' reading comprehension. The researcher wants to find out whether the video developed students' reading comprehension of narrative text for the tenth year students of MAN 2 Model Pekanbaru.
Conceptual Framework
This makes the classroom atmosphere more comfortable and the students are not bored while learning English. The researcher wants to use the video movie based on the story of narrative text such as: fable, legend or fairy tales in every meeting to help students with reading comprehension before they read the story in the text. In this case, the video was used to solve the students' problem by applying some activities by watching video films and then giving tasks and discussion.
In addition, watching a video film of a narrative story gives students an opportunity to learn the relevant story. When the purpose of teaching reading is for students to understand the content of the presented story or dialogues, they can quickly catch ideas not only from the speech of the speakers, but also from the vivid pictures they have seen. . Based on the above theories, the researcher conducted a classroom action research in teaching reading comprehension of narrative text through video film.
The purpose of this research is to find a solution to classroom problems to improve students' reading comprehension of narrative text. In this case, the researcher used a video film to improve the reading comprehension of a narrative text in eleventh grade Social 2 students at MAN 2 Model Pekanbaru.
Participants of the Research
The researcher worked with another English teacher as a collaborator to get better results, his name is Louis Devaris Bergsman and he is American.
The Setting of the Research
- Observation
This description was used to observe whether the teacher taught the indicators of reading comprehension of narrative texts or not. Observation sheets were used to obtain data on students' reading comprehension of narrative text through a video film as a media in the teaching and learning process. The researcher observed the activities of the students during the teaching and learning process while watching the video film.
The observation was made by using the observation sheets consisting of indicators for the students and the teacher's activities during the teaching and learning process. Then, observations based on the lesson plan for teaching reading comprehension of narrative text through video films should also be used to observe the effectiveness of using video films in the teaching and learning process. It was also used to record students' and teachers' problems during the learning process through the video film.
Interviews were conducted to find out what happened during the research and what the result was of using the video film. By conducting this procedure, the researcher attempted to recognize the students' own perceptions of the effectiveness of the video film in improving their reading skills.
Procedure of the Research
- Plan
- Action
- Observation
- Reflecting
Then, at the end of the meeting, the writer gave the test to the students, then the researcher gave a final test at the end of the cycle to see any improvements in learning after the teaching process through a video film. In this step, the researcher also designs the materials that will be given to the students. The investigator then administered end-of-cycle post-tests to determine any improvement in learning after being taught through the video film or narrative.
Describe and determine the linguistic features of the text (use of verbs and preferences). At the end of each meeting, the assistant researcher helped the researcher to evaluate the students and recorded her notes on the observation sheet. The researcher continued this study in the second cycle of teaching reading comprehension based on the reflection result.
However, some changes were made based on the result of the researcher's and collaborator's reflection. In this step, all the plans were designed with a view to making improvements in the next cycle.
