He is an experienced farmer and breeder of Holstein-Fresian cattle and has already greatly improved the State School dairy herd. The other members of the faculty have remained as during the past year and all have done good service.

For several years the University has owned and leased the building on the corner of Main and University streets purchased by William A. The University must have an adequate modern gymnasium, and no effort should be spared to make this provision for our population. growing student population.

REPORT OF THE LIBRARIAN

Our overcrowded state of affairs at present is somewhat of an impediment to the best service and has impaired the facilities of the library. Today, conditions have changed in such a way that the lyceums no longer feel responsible in the matter of this tax and only two of the four lyceums have paid attention to it for a few years.

NEW YORK STATE SCHOOL OF CLAY- WORKING AND CERAMICS

Miss Greenwood is a graduate of the Massachusetts Normal Art School and for some time taught successfully at James Millikin University, Decatur, Illinois. The year has been made notable by the appropriation by the Legislature of the sum of $25,000 for much needed expansion and heating. During the year forty students are enrolled and the classes are working vigorously.

At the conference of the American Ceramic Society in March your Director presented two papers, and Mr. At the meeting of the International Congress of Applied Chemistry in New York in September, 1912, your Director will read a paper prepared by him in the past year, in collaboration with a of the students. The demand for graduates from the school continues to increase and good reports are being received of those who have entered their work.

The mail received at the school sometimes assumes large proportions, and it will be necessary in the near future to provide for a secretary and stenographer who can devote his time to the work of the office. In the past, you have been dependent on a student who could only spend part of the time at the desk. Your Director wishes again to express his obligation to the Faculty of Alfred University, who have at all times co-operated heartily in the work of the School.

NEW YORK STATE SCHOOL OF AGRICULTURE

The third annual catalog, listing students and minor changes in course of study, has been published, as has a sixteen-page pamphlet with general information about the school. In addition, data on experimental work of local interest has been provided to local newspapers and the agricultural press. These experiments were largely along the lines of variety testing of potatoes, maize, oats and leguminous forage crops with the aim of deciding on the most profitable varieties for this particular section.

The School did not have funds and did not feel that it was its province to deal largely with extension work. A four-day Farmers' Institute School was held from February 12 to 15 in collaboration with the State Department of Agriculture, which was attended by at least nine hundred and sixty. A total of 158 students were enrolled during the year, showing an increase of over 29 per cent over the enrollment of 1910 and 1911.
