INVESTING IN

In 1957, when I arrived at Alfred for my freshman year, I stood at the end of a long line to register. Although my mentor, Professor Dave Leach, had moved on, most of the great teachers who had taught me were still there: Mike Sibley, Dan Sass, Dave Ohara, Val Cushing, and of course the legendary Mel Bernstein. We formed the Humanities Department and conquered the world during the unrest in Vietnam.

One student, the late Phyliss Monroe, asked me to supervise an independent study on women's suffrage. And special mention goes to Meredith Scott, who is building a career as a historian of the Holocaust. Hey readers, if your name is missing, I apologize; remember, I've taught almost 9,000 of you.

Today, a member of the faculty would be fired for courting, much less with, an undergraduate student. AU gave me sabbaticals to write books and then on eds in papers from Long Island to Buffalo. It hired Emrys Westacott, a distinguished AU philosopher, to teach me humility on the golf course (ahem, I hit my first holeshot last summer).

Everyone is welcome with special invitations to Alfred's Golden Saxons (anyone who graduated in 1968 or earlier, with the Golden Saxon honorary years and 1964). There will be a special group reunion for the Alfred University sisters of Alpha Kappa Omicron in honor of AKO's 75th anniversary. If you've found love on the Alfred University campus, this is your year to CELEBRATE.

Save the date for Reunion 2020, June 12-14
