In Through the Out Door: MFA Alumni 2020

In Through the Out Door: MFA Alumni 2020 is an exhibition featuring artwork by 2020 graduates from the School of Art and Design's Master of Fine Arts program. It is being shown in the Fosdick-Nelson Gallery and Robert C. Turner Gallery.

The event gives the public a chance to see artwork from last spring's MFA Thesis Exhibition in person.

Due to COVID-19, the popular MFA thesis shows were moved to a virtual, online format. Once the Fall 2020 semester reopening plans were announced by the University, the galleries invited the MFA class of 2020 to a group exhibition across two large professional exhibition spaces.

The exhibition highlights the work of the 16 recent alumni. The artists include: Chris Alveshere, Francesco Gattuso, Lauren Havel, Teisha Holloway, Sam Horowitz, Jing Huang, Taylor Keister, Ara Koh, Haley Nannig, Leslie Rollins, Jamie Rose, Edward Salas, Josh Schutz, Kirstin Willders, ChengOu Yu, and Qinxuan Zhang.

Alfred Community Survey

Presented by ACES: Alfred Committee on Equity and Safety

We invite every member of the Alfred Community to share their perspectives of life in Alfred. We encourage students, residents, employees, business owners, landlords, tenants and regular visitors to Alfred to join the conversation.

Responses will be used in conjunction with the Village's completion of the New York State Police Reform and Reinvention Collaborative Executive Order and to improve safety and policing practices, and quality of life in Alfred. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

Please complete the survey by December 20, 2020 via QR code, link on the Village website, or if you prefer to submit a paper copy, contact info@alfredny.org to pick up and submit at the Village Hall.

ACES is a collection of individuals comprised from the various constituencies that make up the Town and Village of Alfred including representatives from: the faculty, staff and student bodies at Alfred State College and Alfred University; Alfred Police Department, Alfred State College University Police, Alfred University Public Safety, Alfred Village Board, Town of Alfred, A.E. Crandall Hook and Ladder Company, business owners and community members. The purpose of this group is to serve the entire community.

We work together to review policy, make recommendations to propose new or enhanced policy based upon available information, facilitate and develop meaningful collaborations and dialogues within the community, and present actionable opportunities to our community. We have and will continue to work within our shared and unique spheres of influence to gather relevant information to inform our work.

Our goal is collaborative in scope and is focused on the development of transformative opportunities and actionable change with social justice, equity, accountability, and community development and improvement at its core for the benefit of our entire community.

We feel it is important to work as one body to address the concerns of students and community members alike.

Adam TINKLE - IEA Artist in Residence

Adam Tinkle's work considers sound, listening, improvisation, and co-creation across divides of artistic discipline and social location. His path winds between performances, gallery exhibitions, site-specific interventions, participatory workshops, and collaborations in a range of media, including an audio drama featuring Marina Abramovic and Kim Stanley Robinson and the ambisonic sound design for the award-winning 360 VR film "How to Tell a True Immigrant Story." His music releases on Risky Forager, Edgetone, and Midnight Gallery span noise, jazz, and folksong, and his recent video installations imagine feedback as a form of machinic desire.

The Institute for Electronic Art's Experimental Projects Residency is supported by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State

Legislature and the Schein-Joseph Endowment.

Under COVID-19 protocols sadly any in-person engagements with students and IEA AIRs will not be possible.

Flags on Main Street Again!

Approximately 26 flags will be on public display on Main Street in Alfred during the Alfred Art Walk, on November 19th.

A portrait of Alfred through the eyes of some of its newest residents will brighten up our business district this November. First years students enrolled in the MAKE studio classes of Foundations in the School of Art & Design at Alfred University have embarked on an exciting public project. This project, designed and facilitated by Professors Brett Hunter and Monir Madkour, asks the students to survey the public signs and symbols around the village of Alfred and design Flags that represent their place in and interaction with the community.

MAKE Studio is an introduction to making in 3-dimensional spaces. Over the course of the semester students explore a variety of materials and methods for interaction with space, starting with research into form and simple building techniques, to creation of installations and performances, and

culminating with public works focused on context and collaboration. Foundations is a first year course predicated on a generating a rigorous studio practice through comprehensive teaching philosophy that engages a broad range of questions, extending across and beyond artistic disciplines. Individual students bring their own experiences and skills into a community of peers.

Alfred Art Walk is a collaborative monthly venture created by the galleries in the Village of Alfred and

(8)

on the campuses of Alfred University and Alfred State College in an effort to foster dialogue within the local arts communities.

Special thanks to Jamie Babcock and David DeLany for installation of the flags.
