Guest historian will visit AU and ASC this week

"The Life and Death of British Colonialism in India" will be the subject of a 7 PM lecture on Wednesday, March 28 at Alfred State College's Orvis Activities Center by historian Niels Brimnes. At the end of his talk, Dr. Brimnes will entertain questions.

An informal reception will follow.

Dr. Brimnes is currently writing a book about British efforts to eradicate tuberculosis in India before 1947. His talk is being sponsored by both AU and ASC.

He teaches at Aarhus University in Denmark, and is a fellow at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine during the spring semester 2007.

He will also be speaking about the 2005 Danish Cartoon controversy at 12:15 PM on Thursday, March 29 at the Bergren Forum in the Powell Campus Center. Anti-Danish riots erupted in many cities of the Mideast when Danish newspapers published political cartoons of the prophet Mohammed in 2005. The violence raised troubling questions about the limits of freedom of expression.

Finally, Dr. Brimnes will join AU student Melissa Polakos and Prof Gary Ostrower at the Global Studies Roundtable to discuss contemporary Denmark.

7 PM on Thursday in the Powell Knight club.
