Justin Booth Bradley
1892 - 1941
Justin B o o t h B r a d l e y passed a w a y i n Buffalo, N e w Y o r k , M a r c h 28, 1941, at the a g e of forty-eight years. He w a s b o r n in B o l i v a r , N e w Y o r k , S e p t e m b e r 13, 1892. G r a d u a t i n g f r o m B o l i v a r H i g h S c h o o l , in the fall of 1911 he e n t e r e d A l f r e d U n i v e r s i t y . A f t e r three years, at the request of his f a m i l y , he left c o l l e g e a y e a r short of g r a d u a t i o n and t o o k c h a r g e o f the B r a d l e y gas interests i n H o r n e l l , N e w Y o r k . H e r e he did his life w o r k . In 1930' he a c c e p t e d m e m b e r s h i p on the B o a r d of T r u s t e e s of the U n i v e r s i t y w h e r e his w i s e c o u n s e l , his g e n e r o s i t y , a n d his fine l o y a l t y m a d e h i m a m o s t valuable m e m b e r . In his h o m e c i t y , a n d in the w i d e r area w h e r e the f a m i l y business interests lay, he w o n f o r h i m s e l f a r e g a r d and affection it b e c o m e s the lot of f e w m e n to a c h i e v e . F a r e w e l l s e r v i c e s w e r e c o n d u c t e d M a r c h 31, b e f o r e a great a u d i e n c e of relatives, business associates and e m p l o y e e s in A l u m n i H a l l on this c a m p u s .

T h e friends r e p o r t e d ill in the F e b r u a r y letter h a v e c o n t i n u e d to i m p r o v e . Mr. C. L o o m i s A l l e n , w h o suffered a severe heart attack D e c e m b e r 20, has been r e c o v e r i n g s l o w l y at his A l f r e d h o m e . F o r s o m e t i m e he has been r i d i n g out in our unusually find w e a t h e r this spring. H o n . J o h n J. Merrill e x p e r i e n c e d a serious set-back in F l o r i d a in M a r c h , but is n o w r e c o v e r e d and is again at h i s h o m e in A l f r e d . B.
Sheffield Bassett is r e c o v e r i n g n i c e l y f r o m a b r o k e n hip w h i c h he suf- fered earlier in the spring. K e n n e t h S. P a r k e r of W a l t o n , N e w Y o r k , a freshman in L i b e r a l A r t s , died at his h o m e of heart disease, May 30, 1941. T h e general health of the student b o d y has been usually g o o d .
C o l l e g e of Liberal A r t s
T h e w o r k of this C o l l e g e has been g r e a t l y aided by the use of South Hall this year. Its g y m n a s i u m has been a b o o n to the w o m e n , and t h e r o o m s on the upper floor p r o v i d e d ideal quarters for the De- p a r t m e n t of Business and Secretarial Studies. T h i s D e p a r t m e n t is p l a n n i n g s o m e attractive e x p a n s i o n s in offerings in c o o p e r a t i o n w i t h the D e p a r t m e n t of E c o n o m i c s . F o r its benefit and t h r o u g h its efforts the U n i v e r s i t y has w o n m e m b e r s h i p in the National A s s o c i a t i o n of B u s i n e s s T e a c h e r T r a i n i n g Institutions.
M u c h t h o u g h t is b e i n g g i v e n in the State and on our c a m p u s to t h e p r o b l e m s o f t e a c h e r e d u c a t i o n w i t h special reference t o the f i f t h y e a r r e q u i r e m e n t s o o n ( J a n u a r y 1, 1943) to b e c o m e effective. T w o m e m - bers of o u r staff at no e x p e n s e to the U n i v e r s i t y or to t h e m s e l v e s ex- cept f o r t r a n s p o r t a t i o n w i l l spend June at a W o r k s h o p p r o g r a m at S y r a c u s e U n i v e r s i t y u n d e r the auspices of a State c o m m i t t e e on teacher e d u c a t i o n .
D e p a r t m e n t a l clubs, seven of them in this College, have been v e r y a c t i v e d u r i n g the year and h a v e added m a t e r i a l l y to the a c a d e m i c ex- c e l l e n c e o f the year's w o r k . T h e tutorial r e q u i r e m e n t s for h o n o r s a r e n o w in full o p e r a t i o n and a n u m b e r of students in several different de- partments have undertaken these independent r e a d i n g and research c o u r s e s and passed the oral e x a m i n a t i o n s w h i c h f o r m part of the h o n o r s system. T h r e e A l f r e d students read papers a t the N e w Y o r k State Scientific C o n f e r e n c e in R o c h e s t e r this spring. U n d e r the leader- ship of the Dean of Men several students attended the Model A s s e m b l y of the L e a g u e of N a t i o n s at L e h i g h U n i v e r s i t y and p a r t i c i p a t e d ac- t i v e l y in the d i s c u s s i o n s and other w o r k of the A s s e m b l y . U n d e r his l e a d e r s h i p also a panel g r o u p in the D e p a r t m e n t of H i s t o r y and P o - litical S c i e n c e w a s d e v e l o p e d and trained to discuss freely and deeply the question " W h a t i s D e m o c r a c y ? " P r o g r a m s b y t h i s g r o u p w e r e presented at m e e t i n g s of R o t a r y Clubs and other o r g a n i z a t i o n s d u r i n g the w i n t e r and s p r i n g and w e r e v e r y well r e c e i v e d .
T h e r e are f o r t y m e n in this College subject to the draft. T h e Dean of the C o l l e g e has been a c t i v e in g e t t i n g deferment for those look- i n g t o w a r d m e d i c i n e , dentistry, and s p e c i a l i z a t i o n in p h y s i c s and c h e m - istry w h o are eligible for d e f e r m e n t u n d e r the G o v e r n m e n t r e g u l a t i o n s .
S c h o o l o f T h e o l o g y
T h e w o r k of this S c h o o l has p r o c e e d e d this y e a r on its usual h i g h level of e x c e l l e n c e . T h e Dean hopes that the y e a r will end financially in the b l a c k . He is m a k i n g e v e r y effort to solicit special assistance f r o m friends i n t h e Seventh D a y Baptist d e n o m i n a t i o n t o m a k e this

possible. Bills and salaries are paid up to the e n d of May. A p r o b l e m l o o m s f o r the future of the S c h o o l in that all present m e m b e r s of its faculty are sixty-five years of age or older. T h e r e w i l l be o n e gradu- ate in the Class of 1941. T h e D e a n has been k e e p i n g in t o u c h w i t h the l a r g e r m o v e m e n t s in the Christian w o r l d d u r i n g the past year. T h e s e i n c l u d e the W o r l d C o u n c i l of Churches, the N a t i o n a l C o n f e r e n c e of Christians and Jews, the F e d e r a l C o u n c i l of the C h u r c h e s of Christ in A m e r i c a , and the N o r t h A m e r i c a n E c u m e n i c a l C o n f e r e n c e . He has al- so attended the d e n o m i n a t i o n a l m e e t i n g s , e s p e c i a l l y the General Con- ference in Battle Creek, M i c h i g a n , last s u m m e r .
C O L L E G E O F C E R A M I C S
T h e State C o l l e g e has had a n o r m a l l y successful year. T h e St.
Pat's Festival b r o u g h t the usual activities m i n u s the A s s e m b l y , abol- ished last year due to the undesirable features w h i c h it s e e m e d impos- sible o t h e r w i s e to e r a d i c a t e . T h e St. Pat's Ball w i t h the c r o w n i n g of the queen constitutes one of the o u t s t a n d i n g social events of the year.
T h e Open H o u s e , better o r g a n i z e d f r o m year to year, b r i n g s h u n d r e d s of y o u n g p e o p l e to the C o l l e g e w h o see it in full o p e r a t i o n , and f r o m w h o m m a n y future students are d r a w n . T h e budget f o r 1941-42 and the Supplemental Bill p r o v i d e funds for three graduate assistantships, s o m e e x p a n s i o n of the w o r k of the C e r a m i c E x p e r i m e n t Station, and needed e q u i p m e n t and supplies. A W P A a p p r o p r i a t i o n of $14,000 w a s obtained last s u m m e r f o r i m p r o v i n g the i n t e r i o r of B i n n s Hall a n d m a k i n g it better suited to the A r t D e p a r t m e n t for its p o t t e r y labor- atory. T h e fees in the C o l l e g e are b e i n g c o n s o l i d a t e d b e g i n n i n g next y e a r on the same plan as the c o n s o l i d a t i o n of fees in the College of Lib- eral A r t s w h i c h w a s in effect this year. T h e E n g i n e e r s ' C o u n c i l for Pro- fessional D e v e l o p m e n t has again a c c r e d i t e d the College. P l a c e m e n t of g r a d u a t e s of this year's class and e a r l i e r classes is all that can be desired. A n u m b e r of f e l l o w s h i p s have been in o p e r a t i o n d u r i n g .the y e a r and a v e r y i m p o r t a n t and e x t e n s i v e research p r o j e c t is l i k e l y to be b r o u g h t to the C o l l e g e on a private basis in the near future. A n u m b e r of losses of staff m e m b e r s has taken place d u r i n g the year and others are l e a v i n g this s u m m e r . S U M M E R S C H O O L S O F 1 9 4 0
T h r e e s u m m e r s c h o o l s flourish on our c a m p u s . T h e r e is the so- called Intersession s c h o o l confined chiefly to F i e l d Z o o l o g y ; the sur- v e y i n g s c h o o l for freshman e n g i n e e r s and o t h e r s ; and the regular six- w e e k session f o l l o w i n g these. T h e regular session last s u m m e r had a
r e c o r d attendance of 188. M u c h of the graduate t r a i n i n g w h i c h Alfred U n i v e r s i t y offers is p r o v i d e d by the s u m m e r s c h o o l . T h e b o o m i n the S c h o o l o f A g r i c u l t u r e c o n t i n u e s . A l t h o u g h the c o n t r a c t w i t h the F e d e r a l G o v e r n m e n t f o r the Civil A e r o n a u t i c s Ad- m i n i s t r a t i o n p r o g r a m i s w i t h A l f r e d University, the w o r k i s d o n e l a r g e l y t h r o u g h the S c h o o l of A g r i c u l t u r e . T h e S c h o o l also has an e x t e n s i v e defense p r o g r a m in a d d i t i o n to the a v i a t i o n in w h i c h it g i v e s i n A l f r e d and W e l l s v i l l e and D a n s v i l l e short courses p r e p a r i n g y o u n g m e n for semi-technical p o s i t i o n s in the defense industries. D u r i n g the past y e a r 652 such m e n have been trained in these c o u r s e s . T h e defense b u i l d i n g w i i i c h it w a s e x p e c t e d a short t i m e a g o w o u l d be built n o r t h of the present m a i n A g r i c u l t u r a l Hall did not materialize.
T h e bill w a s v e t o e d by G o v e r n o r L e h m a n . H o w e v e r , a bill did pass the L e g i s l a t u r e and b e c o m e law, effective July 1, c h a n g i n g the n a m e of the S c h o o l t o the " N e w Y o r k State A g r i c u l t u r a l and T e c h n i c a l Insti tute at A l f r e d U n i v e r s i t y . " It also m a d e s o m e increases in salary scales and p r o v i d e d f o r sabbatical leaves.
T h e d i r e c t o r feels that t h e increase in the size of the S c h o o l , its c o m i n g to m a t u r i t y , so to speak, b r i n g s b o t h losses and gains. T h e r e is t h e loss of the intimate, f a m i l y a t m o s p h e r e about the S c h o o l w h i c h w a s so c h a r a c t e r i s t i c of it w h e n s m a l l e r ; on the other hand, h o w e v e r , is t h e g r e a t l y increased usefulness of the institution to the surround- i n g c o m m u n i t y and to the State. T h e r e is the p o s s i b i l i t y of r e c e i v i n g f r o m the F e d e r a l G o v e r n m e n t s o m e $200,000 for a d d i t i o n a l e q u i p m e n t for the defense p r o g r a m . A n e w p o u l t r y h o u s e has been built and t w o g r e e n h o u s e s . T h e athletic f i e l d w h i c h w a s b e g u n last s u m m e r w i l l b e f i n i s h e d this s u m m e r . F o r these purposes W P A grants have been m a d e available. At the C o m m e n c e m e n t e x e r c i s e s this m o n t h 106 y o u n g p e o p l e r e c e i v e d d i p l o m a s or certificates. In all 1,006 different p e o p l e h a v e studied this y e a r under the auspices of t h e S c h o o l of A g r i c u l t u r e .

T h e L i b e r a l A r t s e n r o l l m e n t last year, 1939-40, w a s the largest w i t h o n e e x c e p t i o n in the d e c a d e ; this year, 1940-41, it is the smallest w i t h o u t e x c e p t i o n in the decade. T h e loss, chiefly in freshmen, w a s due apparently to the uncertainties of the t i m e s last s u m m e r ; to n e w o p p o r t u n i t i e s f o r r e m u n e r a t i v e e m p l o y m e n t ; to the d i s c u s s i o n s of t h e S e l e c t i v e S e r v i c e Rill, and other d i s t u r b i n g factors. T h e e n r o l l m e n t i n t h e C o l l e g e of C e r a m i c s w a s m a i n t a i n e d at the n o r m a l level. T h e out- l o o k f o r e n r o l l m e n t next fall is better than m i g h t be supposed, con- s i d e r i n g the p e r p l e x i t i e s of the time. T h e a p p l i c a t i o n s for L i b e r a l A r t s f o r next y e a r are equal to or slightly better than t h e y w e r e last s u m m e r , o r the s u m m e r b e f o r e ( 1 9 3 9 ) w h e n w e had the b u m p e r fresh- m a n e n r o l l m e n t .
