The Washington Semester Program
Dr. Heineman of the Social Sciences Division is now taking applications for the Washington Semester Program for Fall 2008.
The Washington Semester Program is sponsored by American University and enables students to spend
a semester in Washington, D.C., studying public policy in a variety of areas. Students who have participated in the program have used their experience and contacts to obtain excellent positions in Washington and elsewhere.
In addition to taking coursework, students will meet with government officials and political leaders in seminar sessions and will participate in an internship of their choosing. In addition to its major focus on American national government, the program also has a number of options utilizing non-
governmental resources in the Washington area, including working with interest groups and art and cultural institutions. Some of these are: journalism, law enforcement, public law, economics, international business, international organizations, and women and politics.
Course credits and grades are fully transferable to the student's transcript. Students can obtain additional information on the program at www.washingtonsemester.co.... Juniors or seniors are eligible to participate, and scholarships are available. In the past few semesters, Brandon Gustafson, Racheal Teall, and Timothy Hulley have attended the program. Those interested should contact Dr.
Heineman in room 209 of the Olin Building. Applications should be completed by Thursday, April 10, 2008.

Former Employee and Spouse Battle Cancer
In January, Julie Taylor, former AU Director of Environmental Health and Safety, 2002-05, was diagnosed with colon cancer. In February, her husband, Jerry, was diagnosed with lung, liver, and bone cancer.
Julie has undergone chemotherapy and radiation treatments to shrink the tumor prior to surgery scheduled in four weeks. She will then continue with six months of chemotherapy. Jerry has daily radiation therapy on his spine and has completed his first round of chemotherapy which he will continue three days each week for six months.
Julie and her family, which includes 5 children 9 to 19 years old, moved to Granville, Ohio after leaving Alfred University. Julie, is employed at Ecolab, and continues to work when able. Jerry, employed at Owens Corning Science and Technology Center, has been unable to work since February.
Medical expenses are mounting with insurance co-pays and the cost of multiple daily 60 mile round trips to treatment centers. Friends and fellow church members in Granville have come to the family's aid and have established a donation fund at Park National Bank.
If you would like to help the Taylor family and contribute to this fund, send donations to:
THE TAYLOR FAMILY BENEFIT FUND, Park National Bank, PO Box 268, Hebron, OH 43025.
To send a note or card to Julie, her address is: 112 Ballymore Ct. Granville, OH 43023.
