Alumna returns to curate cut-paper exhibit 3/18/14
“Pulp,” a contemporary cut-paper exhibition curated by alumna Alexis Grabowski, will open at Alfred University&s (AU) Cohen Gallery through Saturday, May 17.
“Pulp” is a group exhibition bringing together several contemporary artists working with cut, collaged, and assembled paper, including Mia Pearlman, Kako Ueda, Natasha Bowdoin, Alta Buden, and Hong Seon Jang.
The exhibition illuminates the dimensionality and solidity of paper media and the process of artistic production through deconstruction. The artists create intricate and surreal articulations of subjects ranging from eroded geologic forms and weather systems to traditional paper-cuts of corporeal forms, insects and urban life, exploring the spectrum of possibilities offered by one of the most common staples of artistic production.
Grabowski earned her bachelor of fine arts degree from AU&s School of Art and Design in 2008 and now works as a visual artist and curator in Woodstock, NY. Her artistic practice explores the transient aspects of place and her work is executed in ink and watercolor. She is also the Artist-in-Residence program director at the Byrdcliffe Art Colony.
“Pulp” is her first curatorial project.
Pearlman is a mixed media artist working in paper, glass, and metal. She has exhibited internationally at galleries such as The Museum of Arts and Design in New York City, Plaatsmaken in the Netherlands, the Centre for Recent Drawing in London, and The Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. Her work has also been featured in major publications including The New York Times and the New York Post. Pearlman lives and works in Brooklyn, where she is currently working on a commission for the NYC Metropolitan Transit Authority.
Ueda is a Japanese artist living and working in Brooklyn. Her work explores bodily and natural forms and their intersection with contemporary society. She is represented by the George Adams Gallery in New York City and has been shown at The Museum of Art and Design, Smack Mellon in New York City, and the Decordova Museum and Sculpture Park in Massachusetts, among others. Ueda has also received artist grants from the New York Foundation for the Arts and the Urban Artist Initiative.
Bowdoin is a Texas-based visual artist working in cut paper, constructing images of transcribed passages from notable literary figures. She holds a master of fine arts degree from the Tyler School of Art, a bachelor of arts degree from Brandeis University, and has completed residencies at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Roswell Artist-in- Residence Program, and the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art. Her work has been exhibited at the Hardesty Arts Center in Oklahoma, the CODA Museum in the Netherlands, the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in North Carolina, and the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia.
Buden is also a visual artist working primarily in cut paper. Her work uses source material culled from personal photographs and other found images to compose complex images teetering between an inner and exterior world.
Buden exhibits regularly in the Brooklyn area, where she lives and works as director of the HARBOR gallery, and has also been shown at the Smart Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Illinois. She earned degrees is visual art, history and philosophy of science from the University of Chicago.
Jang is a mixed media artist exploring human activity and natural phenomena as it corresponds to destruction and
creation. He received a master of fine arts degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology and a bachelor of fine arts degree from Dan Kook University. Jang has been widely exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across the country and internationally at institutions including the Islip Art Museum in New York, Socrates Sculpture Park in New York City, and the Hangaram Art museum in South Korea. He received the Urban Artist Initiative Grant at the Lower East Side Printshop during his Special Editions Residency in 2011.
