of thorax with rather longand
densewhitish pileand
meso- pleurawithlongblackhairs;post-alarcallositieswithfinelong blackand
whitish hairsin tufts;scutellumcovered withlong whitishpile likethatonmesonotum and
withafewcoarserblack oryellowonesonthemargin.Abdomen
slightlynarrower thanthorax, shining dark metallic green, with rather thickwhite pile.All the femora black, their tips brownish-yellow, tibise yellow, with broad blackrings around themiddle;tarsi onouterside

black than yellow,on undersidelargely yellow.Wings
tintedwithyellow, their basesdullbrown which
mergesintoyel- low asitspreads outoverthe wings. Spurious veinweak;
lastsection of fourth vein withtwo
angulationswhich
have very shoirtstumps
at their apices; the secondspur,which
projects into the first posterior cell, some- times obsolete, the part oftheveinbeyond
this last broadly curvedout- ward. Length: 6-8mm.; wing
6-7.5mm.
Female: Frons narrowerthan oneeye, narrowing towards vortex, with abroadtransverse depression a short distanceaboveantennas
and
aweak
longitudinal groove running from ocelli to the depression; frons clothed with lightyellow erect pilewhich
is longer inthe ocellar region. Facial tuberclemore
prominent than inthemale.Mesonotum
withsome
coarser hairs scattered through the light pile.Mesopleura? with light pile.
Abdomen
broader than thoraxand
with shorter pile than in the male.Lastsectionoffourthveinwith onlyslighttrace ofthesecondangulation,
and
rarelywith traceofstump.Length

collectors).This species runs to C. petulca in the table in Williston's Synopsis of the
North American
Syrphidse. In comparison with the type of that speciesit issmaller,more
robust,and
darkershining metallic green.The
arista ofpetulcaislonger
and
withdistinctpubescenceto thetip;all three antennal joints aremore
yellow; the frons is yellow atbase of antenna}.The body
pubescenceofpetulcaisveryshortand
thinly scattered, the hairs on thescutellarmarginstronger, shorterand
black.The
wingsofpetulca are comparatively longer; the last section of the fourth vein ismuch
nearer the wing
margin and
runsnearly parallel with it. Its legs are of amore
