INTRODUCTION
Grammar is the sound and sound patterns; it is the basic units of meaning such as words, and the rules to combine them to form new sentences constitute the grammar
of language. There are several parts in grammatical one of them is a verb. Verbs are important part in grammar. Verbs are subdivided into two groups, regular verb and irregular verbs. Jhon E. ( 2000,P.124) states that a regular verb is one that forms its past
2 and past participle by adding –d or –ed to the infinitive form. Teschner (2000,P.47) in regular the preterit is formed with the suffix –ed: work- worked, if the base ends e, -dis simply added to it: hone-honed. Where the base ends in consonant plus y , the y changes to I before the –edis added; deny- denied.
Where the base ends in a vowel plus y, the y is retained: alloy- alloyed. The role for doubling the final consonant in regular weak verbs for the preterits is the same as the rule for doubling in the present participle.
Regular and irregular verb can be found in narrative text. According to McQuilan (2008, P.85) a narrative text is a story that told in language and converted into language sign. Its mean that the readers will read the text that has been converted into a language, then Bal (2009, P.1) proposes that a narrative text is a text in which an agent or subject conveys to an address („tells‟ the reader) a story in particular medium, such a language, imagery, sound, buildings, or combination thereof. Its mean that the narrative is a story tells or explain to reader about particular that have in the story.
Most of the students‟ have less understood in using regular and irregular verb in making narrative text. Dictionaries are perhaps the most valuable tool one can use in distinguishing between regular and irregular verb. The researcher also found students‟ mistakes in writing narrative text such as they write the past of regular verb stop became stopped and plan become planed. Nunan (2003,P.88) writing is the mental work of inventing ideas, thinking about how to express them, and organizing them into statements and paragraph that will be clear. The students‟ have reason why English was difficult subject it because English was considered a difficult things to be learned and they also very rarely used dictionary to learn as well as the scarcity of grammar introduce in detail from the teacher.
Based on the background above it can be concluded that the problem in this study is students‟ ability using regular and irregular verb. In supporting this research, the researcher reviews the related finding which discussed the some problem with this
research there was reviewed from a research who written by Roselina Sitepu (2013). The population of this researcher was the eleven grades at SMA N 2 Muaro Bungo in academic years 2015/2016. There were five classes at eleven grades. The researcher took the 16 students‟ from five classes. The researcher would use random sampling as a technique to choose sample.
According to Gay and Airasian (2011, P.144) simple random sampling is the process of selecting a sample in such a way that all individuals in the defined population have an equals and independent chance of selection for the sample. In collecting the data the researcher used document analysis as a instrument. After geting the data, the researcher constructed document analysis in making list of regular and irregular verb in
