DESCRIPTION OF TWO SQUALODONTS RECENTLY DIS-
COVERED IN THE CALVERT CLIFFS, ^LVRYLAND;
AND NOTES ON THE SHARK-TOOTHED CETACEANS.

INTRODUCTION.
When
the studyof paleontologywas
lessadvanced
than it is at present,any announcement
of the discovery of prehistoric animals unlike the living indigenous faunawas
usually received withsome
suspicion. Inspite of this distrust,
many
attempts weremade by
the early writers to explain the presence of fossil remains of marinemammals
in strataabove
the sealeveloratsome
distancefrom
the seashore. In one of these treatises' is foundwhat
is, apparently, thefirst notice of the occurrenceoffossil remains referable to shark- toothed cetaceans.The
author of thiswork
figures a fragment of a mandible, obtainedfrom
the tufa of Malta,which
possesses three serrate double-rooted molar teeth.Squalodonts assuch were first brought to the attention of ]mleon- tologists in 1840,
by
J.P.S.Grateloup,'aFrench naturalist primarily interested in marine invertebrates. In the original description of Squalodon, Grateloup held the view that this rostral fragmentfrom
Leognan,France,belonged tosome
largesaurian relatedto Iguanodon.Following the
anouncement
of this discovery.Von Meyer
^called at- tentiontothe teethof thisfossil, and concludedthat thespecimenwas
referable to
some
flesh-eating cetacean.A
year later, Grateloup*concurredin thisopinion.
One
otherspecimenshould bementioned
in this connection, but, unfortunately, its relationships arequiteuncer- tain. This specimen consists ofa single toothwhich was
thought to bear resemblancetosome
pinnipedby Von Meyer
^and named Pachy-
odon mirahilis.Although
thisname
hastwo

number
of forms areknown from
the Tertiary deposits of Europe,and from
similar deposits along the Atlantic coast ofNorth
America.Other
repre- sentatives of this grouphave been
found in Patagonia, Australia,and New
Zealand. This peculiar distributionmay
be explained in partby
the inadequacy of ourknowledge
concerning the Oligoceneand Miocene marine
formations ofAsiaand
Africa.Although
con- siderable progress has beenmade m
the study ofmarine
inverte- bratesand
land vertebrates of the Pacific coast Province,compar-
ativelylittle isknown
concerning its cetacean fauna.The
possibilities for widespread dispersal of the cetaceans are exceptionally greatinview
of the absence of physical barriers,and
the chief controlling factor, apparently, is the food supply. It is fairly wellknown
thatsome
of the larger cetaceans, especially thewhalebone
whales,perform migrationsbetween
definite points.Other
cetaceanshave
been observed only in rather limited areas,and
a few forms areknown which
are restricted to large fresh-water riversand
their estuaries. Itisthoughtthatsome
ofthepredaceous forms, such as the dolphins, follow the routes of the oceanic currents. In case of the squalodontswhich
were, judgingfrom
their serrate dentition, remarkably well adapted for a predatory lifeand
hence could secure an adequate food supply wherever fish or dolphins were present in sufficientnumbers
to insure easy capture, onewould
expect theirgeographic range tobepractically cosmopolitan.Under
similar prevailing conditions of aquatic life the distribution of the squalodonts should
have
beenmuch
thesame
as that of the KillerWhale
(Orcinus).In theNorthern
Hemisphere
the squalodonts appear in consider- ablenumbers
during the Miocene. Their geological history in this region previous to theMiocene
is unsatisfactory, resting as it doesupon
the occurrence of cetaceans in the Ashley Kiver phosphate beds ofSouth
Carolinaand upon
the discovery of an imperfectlyknown
squalodont ofsmall sizein theUpper
Oligocene ofGermany.

depositshave
yielded a relatively largeassem- blage of cetaceansand
anumber
of thesehave
been referred to as squalodonts.The
described forms are: CeterMnops longifrons,and
Squalodon dehilis, inodestus, pelagius,protervusLeidy
(notCope),and
tiedemani. All of these are eitherfrom
the sands or the phosphate beds of theAshley River, except Squalodon tiedemani,which
isfrom
theclosely approximateWando
Riverin thesame
State. All those referred toSqualodon, except pelagiusand
tiedemani, areknown
onlyfrom
detached teeth. Squalodon pelagius is representedby
a frag-ment
of theleft maxilla bearing a single tooth; its relationships are uncertain.Fragments
of the upperand
lower jaws of Squalodon tiedemani, with teeth, represent all that isknown
concerning this form. These fragments suggest a cetacean of large size.A
restudy of the Ashley fauna has convinced the writer thatmost
of the cetaceansmentioned above
are not squalodonts, as will beshown
in another part of this review.Two
other interesting cetaceanshave
been obtainedfrom
theAshley phosphate deposits.The
only partsknown
of one ofthese, ColoplionodonJiolmesii,aresingle-rootedteeth,and
theskull oftheother, AgoropJiius pygmaeus, isunlikeany known
squalodont.
The
decision as to the age of these fossils necessarily dependsupon
geological considerations. It isknown
that there is a thin layer of marl" ofUpper
Miocene agewhich
overlies the Ashley (Eocene) marl. In this connection itmay
be well to quotefrom
WilliamH. DalH
regarding the age of theseMiocene
marls:I have no hesitation in concluding that the rock from which the phosphate nodules are derived is of Upper Miocene age, or at least that its fauna, while unmistakably Miocene, is more really related to theChesapeakeMiocene than to the older beds of the Chipola Epoch. The phosphatization of the rock was of courselaterthanitsformation and perhaps might have takenplacelikethatofthe verysimilarPeace River, Florida,phosphate pebbles, duringPliocene time.
Since
many
of the fossil cetaceans were obtainedfrom
thebed
of theAshley River, itby
nomeans
followsthattheyareallderivatives of those bedswhich have been
determined as Eocene. If these cetaceans were reallyEocene
forms, then itmight
be said that the squalodontshad
attained a considerabledevelopment
inNorth Amer-
ica at that time.
We would
expect, however, that these supposedEocene
formswould
present primitive characters. Unfortunately,the fragmentaryconditionofsome
oftheremainsmakes
itdifficult toform an
opinion in thismatter.Taken
as a whole, they can not be said tobemore

discovered inNorth America which
are so primitive that theymust
be regarded as probablyolder than the Miocene.As remarked
above, the great majority ofknown
squalodonts arefrom
deposits conceded tobe
ofMiocene
age.On
the basis of the fauna, as representedby
the squalodonts, there isno good
reasonfor consideringmost
of thefossil cetaceans derivedfrom
deposits in the Ashley Riverregion as older than theUpper
Miocene. Agorophius pygmaeus, apparently, is derivedfrom
deposits ofUpper Eocene
age, that is,
from
the Ashley marl.The
age ofsome
of the other cetaceans will probably be disputed untilsome competent
geologst obtains additional specimensand
reportson
their occurrence.Our
presentinformationregarding this group is chiefly the result of accidental discovery of isolated specimens,and
ourknowledge
concernng them
should rapidlywiden whenever
asystematic searchis
made
for their remains inmarine
formations.The
fact that cetaceans are capable of traveling long distancesshould placethem
foremostamong
animals used for correlating widespread deposits.They
occurnot onlyin typicalmarine
depositsbut
in estuariesand
river deltas as well.
The main
difficultyseems
tobe amorphological one, forwe
are confronted with the task of determiningwhether
or not aspecies has a long geologic range. Evolutionmay have
beenand
probablywas
extremel}'-slow in modifying the physical charac- teristics ofmany
of the cetaceans.From
the evidence affordedby
fossil cetaceans
we
see thatsome
of the familieshave no
living representatives whilesome
of the generahave made
little ifany
progress since theMiocene
sofar as skeletalcharactersareconcerned.The
squalodontsrepresentan archaicgroup which
arestillimperfectlyknown and
the surviving typesprobably disappearedbefore theclose of the Pliocene.A
possible exception to this statement restson
a record ofa squalodontfound
in association with quaternary landmammals
in Italy.For
