MESSAGE OF THE PRESIDENT

T

.HE TURN FEST at Buffalo is now history, and I am writing this message in the city of Boston, the vast labors of preparation for the tournament having delayed the print- ing of the Annual Report.

As I was thinking of what I should say to the Turners of America in this annual greeting, I passed the statue of Wendell Phillips in the Public Gardens of Boston. On its base these 'fords are inscribed:

''Whether in chains or in laurels, Libert]) knows nothing but victories."

The great orator of the Anti-Slavery movement was pro- tected in the exercise of free speech by the Turners of Boston, and his letter of gratitude hangs in their hall. So we may well take his words to heart, to cheer us in the present crisis of our liberal and progressive ideals.

Last year· I said, "We are not doing as well as we should,"

and lamented that "the missionary spirit of old seems to be turn- ing to embers."

The statistical reports for the past year furnish confirmation of this.

Three ca uses are responsible.

The hard times our country is passing through, the result of inflation and extravagance, are partly responsible.

Unfair reports by some societies, who should take pride in their numerical growth, instead of trying to save per-capita tax, are partly responsible.

But mostly responsible is the apathy of our Turners, who should be enlisting new members and organizing new societies.

(4)

This must be done i£ we are to survive and grow.

It

must be done if we are to be a power in the land, if we are to render real service to democracy and liberty as our fathers did.

Perhaps the present Bundesvorort or National Executive Committee has already held the reins too long. Perhaps we are getting weary and growing stale. Young blood with fresh ideas and new energy should be summoned to the work. I ask all Turn- ers to weigh this matter carefully, and assure them that we shall be glad to retire and make way for the Young Guard.

Meanwhile we look to you f~r full cooperation and support.

We are doing the best we can to serve the American T urnerbund, to jus;ify the trust reposed in us. And we are deeply moved by the evidences of your faith in our efforts, which often seem to us woe- fully inadequate as every new convention adds to our duties and responsibilities.

But we do pot repine or despair. We'll keep on doing our best. You do the same.

Get new members. And report them.

Organize new societies. It can be done.

Push mental activities. They are the soul of the Turner body.

Work for the Jahn Educational Fund and the Instructors Retirement Fund. Both are sure things now, and will be perma- nent foundation stones for our cause.

That this cause is in no .danger of being out-of-date was proved by the Buffalo Turn fest. The number of contestants was far greater than the registration at Louisville. The mental activi- ties also were more imposing than ever-including written work of supreme excellence and dramatic performances up to a· pro- fessional standard.

Why, then, should we hang our heads and cry, "What's the use?" Remember the words of Wendell Phillips quoted above:

"Whether in chains or in laurels, Liberty ~nows nothing but victories."

6

Though the work moves slowly, we are getting somewhere.

The educational and missionary tours of Mrs. Marie B. Mac- Donald are producing results. The problems of our Normal Col- lege are apf:>roaching a solution. The demand for a new national organ in the English language will probably be satisfied before the next Convention at Elkhart Lake.

Do not be afraid to elect young men to that convention.

Last year I issued a "call to youth." Youth must take up the work, and carry on to new victories the beautiful Bundesbanner presented to the organization by the Ladies' Auxiliary at the Buffalo T urnfest

For our Turner hosts must not surrender one inch of ground.

We must continue the fight for liberty on every field. It looks as if the Eighteenth Amendment, with the tragic farce of Prohibi- tion, could and would be overthrown. We must also protest and work everywhere against old Blue Laws, new Sabbatarian tyr- anny, the spread of our military and naval Junkerism, the fresh crop of Alien and Sedition Laws-and all the brood of Cossacks, Jingoes and Leeches spawned since the last war.

Have I said too much?

Have I said enough?

Ponder it well, Turners all over this land, and let the next Annual Report show real progress. Your National Executive Committee is ready to surrender its authority to whatever Dis- trict proves itself most worthy.

GEORGE SEIBEL.

REPORT OF THE SECRET ARY

STATISTICAL RESUME

The year ending January 1 has again brought a loss in membership.

While some of the Districts show a gain, this could not offset the loss in other Districts. We also lost a number of the smaller Societies.

The T urnerbund now consists of 21 Districts with 15 5 Societies, 2 Dis- tricts and 1 0 Societies less than last year.

The following Societies either disbanded, withdrew, or combined with other Societies during the year 1929:

New Or leans T urnverein (District also) . Miami Turn & Sport Verein (District also).

Belleville Turners, St. Louis District.

T aftville Maennerchor, Connecticut District.

Bahn Frei T urnverein, Wisconsin District.

Southside T urnverein, Pittsburgh District.

Birmingham T urnverein, Pittsburgh District.

Salem T urnverein, Pittsburgh District.

Berkeley T urnverein, Pacific District.

North West Gymnasium, Ohio District.

The membership of the American T urnerbund and its various classes shows as follows in comparison with the previous year:

SPECIAL NOTICE

Many societies that have never remitted the Special tax levied some years ago are in the above Delinquent List because no one in their membership has brought the matter to the attention of the meeting.

Such societies should find a special incentive to adjust these arrears in the resolution passed by the last Convention in Philadelphia-that one-half of such arrears paid in shall be turned over the Jahn Educational Fund and one-half to the Instructors' Pension Fund (soon to be created).

If your society is in the list, please call attention to this in the meeting.

Here's a Hint For All Turners!

As the Jahn Educational Fund is a permanent endowment, which will grow to ever greater propor- tions as the years pass, there will be many Turners, no doubt, desiring to make provision in their wills to per- petuate the principles of T urnerism through this Fund.

For the guidance of such Turners the following form is given to write into their wills as a codicil:

I give and bequeath to the Trustees of the ] ahn Educational Fund of the American Turnerbund, the sum of _ _ __ __ _ _ __ _ __.,.,ollars

(8)

THE JAHN FUND

Our Jahn Educational Fund has not grown very much dur- ing the past year. due in part to the hard times. but also to the apathy shown in many circles.

Revelations made at Washington during the inquiries into the huge lobbies conducted by the Anti-Saloon League and similar organizations brought out the fact that these people easily get millions of dollars for their operations. the propriety and legiti- macy of which may be seriously questioned.

These revelations also showed that the collectors of such funds often get as much as 40 percent of what they collect. No wonder they are enthusiastic for their "cause ...

We do not offer you 40 percent nor 1 percent to raise money for the Jahn Educational Fund. All you get is the satisfaction of having done something (something that will remain after you are gone) to promote and perpetuate our ideal: Liberty, Enlighten- ment, and a Better World.

In

the fall a folder will be issued and sent to all societies and subscribers. giving a complete list of all contributions. Get your check in now. so your name will be in the list. and so the total will be well over $50,000.00.

REPORT OF COMMITTEE ON MENTAL TRAINING

As we received but a small number of reports on Mental Activities cover- ing the past year, only 1 0 Societies reporting, your Committee was at first in- clined not to award prizes for this period.

This condition is again to be ascribed to the failure of the committees on Mental Training to send in reports. Many were busy, no doubt, preparing for the National Festival.

Mrs. Marie B. MacDonald has been actively engaged in the interest of

~ental

Training among the Societies of the East and Middle West. She has give~ lectures on the following topics: "The Meaning of the News," "Our H.entage from Germany," and "A Sound Mind in a Sound Body," together

~1th

numerous instructive discussions and talks on T urnerism in general to Ac- tlv~s. Ladies, and Junior Classes. Mrs. MacDonald is endowed with a mag- netic personality, fired with the courage and enthusiasm of her convictions, ac- companied by a broad, rich, and ready command of both the English and Ger- man languages.

It

is the universal opinion of all those privileged to meet and hear her, that she at all times proved herself in full rapport with her subject matter, commanding the attention and respect of her hearers. She possesses in a

la~ge

degree the charm and ability to hold the attention of her listeners, which brmg her much well-earned praise for her work of re-awakening new interest in behalf of Mental Activities. May she long be preserved to the T urnerbund to spread the propaganda of our principles: Liberty, Tolerance, and Justice I

Physical Training is a means to an end; it must serve to rouse and trengthen mental activity, to promote these principles of progress.

Previous Committees on Mental Training of the National Committee, as

\hell

~s

the present one, have unremittingly called upon the Societies for reports

5 owing their activities, with but scant responses.

Not receiving reports from our Societies does not necessarily indicate that Mental Training is not receiving attention. More than thirty-two Societies of our organization edit and maintain their own Society paper. From the columns of these papers, as well as that of the local press, one is informed that it is not

50 much a lack of cultivating Mental Training, as it is a failure to report on

~he

part of those having this feature of our work in charge, a failure to compre- end the value of cultural efforts.

It

is the candid opinion of the chairman of this committee that it would be a tep in the right direction to have as many as possible of the members and heads of_ Committees on Mental Training, in both Society and District, attend the meetings of the Committee on Physical Training, which have been held for

~he pa~t

two years, during the latter days of November, at our Normal College in Indianapolis, Indiana.

b . These meetings have borne much fruit, and would have the tendency to . nng. those who are interested in this phase of our work more closely together.

wunng a broader conception of

its

possibilities and a greater measure of success.

I e must bring into our fold a larger number of men and women of broad intel-

ec~

and standing in their community! Why not try it? Surely it is worth whil

~rymg,

and cannot fail to awaken new interest for the cause of T urnerism and its spread and perpetuation.

h \Ye regret that the inter-society and inter-district Debates, as

adopte~

by t e Philadelphia convention, could not be carried out dur'ng the Buffalo National

(10)

Festival, due to the lack of time, but we look forward to a relatively larger participation in the recitations, declamations, essays, and other literary contests, as provided for under the Rules and Regulations and open to all members of the T urnerbund.

The Following Societies have submitted reports on Mental Training dur- ing the past year :

Germania T urnverein, Los Angeles, South California District.

North St. Louis T urnverein, St. Louis District.

McKeesport Turn & Gesangverein, Pittsburgh District.

South-West Gymnastic Association, St. Louis District.

Louisville T urngemeinde, Indiana District.

Allentown T urnverein, Pittsburgh District.

Akron Turner Club, Ohio District.

Charleroi T urnverein, Pittsburgh District.

Cincinnati T urngemeinde, Ohio District.

Carlstadt T urnverein, New Jersey District.

As the report of the Louisville T urngemeinde, when finally analyzed, showed such exceptionally active work and fine programs, it was deemed worthy of 1 00

%

rating and the first prize. Other prizes are listed in the booklet pub- lished at Buffalo Turn fest.

THE PRIZE ESSAYS

As at every Turn fest, there

wa~

a competition in written work, and many excellent essays were submitted. Those from the Louisville T urngemeinde and the Brooklyn Vorwaerts T urnver- ein were specially meritorious. Prizes have been awarded for the best work in this department and are listed in the booklet published at the Buffalo T urnfest.

The Prize Essays

will

be published in a separate booklet this fall, and copies will be sent to all contestants.

DRAMAS AT TURNFEST

Something new was attempted at the Buffalo Turn fest, when the New York T urnverein sent its Dramatic Section to produce two plays at the Court Street Theater. The plays were "Moral,"

by Ludwig Thoma, and "Fuhrmann Henschel," by Gerhart Hauptmann. The performances were up to the best professional standards, but the attendance was comparatively small.

It was only the backing of the Jahn Educational Fund that made these performances possible-another reason why every one should help to make the Fund grow faster. Although there was a financial loss, these dramatic performances have set a new stan- dard of achievement.

TURNERS, NORMAL COLLEGE

The Normal College of the American T urnerbund is now conducting the twenty-third course since its removal to Indianapolis.

Improvements were again made during the year at Camp Brosius, Elkhart Lake, Wis., where the summer sessions are being conducted, and where a four weeks' course in camping, etc., is given the regular class at the close of each school year. The hotel operated in connection with the camp has found favor with members and friends of the T urnerbund, and was well attended during the season. It is hoped to make Elkhart Lake the Turner Chautauqua.

The Board of Trustees of the Normal College consists of the following:

President, George Vonnegut; Secretary, Dr. C. B. Sputh; Treasurer, Theo.

Stempfel; Leo M. Rappaport; Karl H. Heckerich, Minneapolis; Carl H.

Burkhardt, Buffalo; Dr. Rudolph Hofmeister, St. Louis; Grover W. Mueller, Philadelphia; Emil Rath, President of the College and Dean of the Depart- ment of Theory and Practice of Physical Education; Dr. C. B. Sputh, Dean of the Department of Science and Hygiene; W.

L.

Richardson, Dean of the Department of Education, Social Science, and Languages.

The faculty, consisting of thirty-four instructors, includes members of the teaching staff of the Indiana University School of Medicine, Butler University, and the Indianapolis high schools. The following courses are offered:

A four-J)ear course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Physical Educa- tion (B.P.E) and to certification as Teacher of Physical Training for Colleges and Universities.

Graduate courses leading to the degree of Master of Physical Education (M.P.E.).

A three-year course leading to certification as Teacher of Physical Educa- tion for Elementary and High Schools.

An elementar)) tll>o-))ear course, open to male non-matriculants who have attained a high degree of proficiency in gymna.jltics (gymnasts of the second or third grade) and meet such additional requirements as may be prescribed, in- cluding a satisfactory knowledge of German. Students who complete this course receive a certifi{:ate attesting that they are qualified to teach physical education in schools maintained by societies of the American T urnerbund.

Summer courses, comprising special courses in the theory and practice of physical education and in related subjects. These courses are open to persons qualified to pursue profitably the work chosen by them. Credit and certificate will be given for work satisfactorily completed.

Complete information about these courses is given in the catalogue of the Normal College and in the special summer session program, sent on request.

Beginning with the year 1919-20 the Board of Trustees of the Normal College has offered seven scholarships to members of the American T urnerbund (one for each of the circuits), consisting of free tuition for the two-year course.

Full information about these scholarships will be sent l>n request.

The 27th convention of the Turnerbund decided to offer similar scholar- ships to 22 members (one for each of the districts), without the high school education required for those mentioned above, consisting of one year's free tui- tion for the elementary course. Complete information will be sent on request.

THE TURNER CHAUTAUQUA

There is no pleasanter place to spend the hot summer than on beautiful Elkhart Lake, where the summer school and camp of the T urnerbund is lo- cated. To the shores of this lovely Wisconsin Lake come hundreds of Turners, old and young, to rest and meet friends. The Turners have a very good cottage hotel right on the grounds, and there are other places where rooms and board can be secured at reasonable rates. Address all inquirid to

Normal College,

American T urnerbund.
