. ANNUAL REPORT

of the

NATIONAL EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

from

April l, 1923, to April 1. 1924

(2)

THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE.

This is the first annual report of the American Turnerbund issued since the headquarters have been removed to Pittsburgh and the new National Executive Committee has taken over the administration. As National President of our great organization, which for seventy-five years has stood in the vanguard of liberal and progressive movements, I wish to thank the members and officers of the constituent societies for the splendid support and cooperation they have accorded to our efforts-and wish to assure them that this is no mere formal verbiage, but sincere appreciation of an actual condition. Optimism is based on observation and experience. Having visited many societies-in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Detroit, Davenport, Chicago, and elsewhere-I have every- where found nothing but enthusiasm, courage, new hope and earnest aspira- tion. We are going forward!

The present report shows a small increase in membership, amounting to 741. We believe the decline of recent years has now been checked and that the next report will show a gratifying growth both in membership and in the number of societies enroUed. Even greater will be our advance in various activities and in general efficiency. But we must not only wait and hope, we must also work and press onward. If every individual does what he can, be it ever so little. the result will be overwhelming success. To guide and inspire these efforts I address to the members these pages, containing some things that have been said before, but cannot be emphasized too often.

* *

*

We must have new members. It is important to secure recruits to our cause, but it is equally important, or more so, to secure the very best human material, men who will work and think.

How to get them? The very best way will be to make your Turn- verein so attractive that outsiders will consider the opportunity of joining a privilege. Get busy! Do things! Wherever things are being done, the on- looker instinctively feels a desire to come in and lend a hand ..

The National Executive Committee has made one suggestion t) the societies, which may result in far-reaching benefit and bring us many good new members. We have recommended to each society the adoption of the following resolution:

"Resolved, That this society, until the close of the year 1925, shall re- ceive into membership any recent immigrant of German origin without initiation fee or payment of dues during the first year of membership."

This affords us an opportunity to help the new arrivals, and to enlist valuable new members in our societies. For this reason the National Exe- cutive Committee was glad to note that its suggestion had found approval in most societies.

We have prepared a circular that is being distributed to immigrants from Germany, who are coming to America by thousands. This circular is to tell them of the benefits and advantages offered by membership Jn a Turn-

(3)

verein. See that your society reaches out after these prospective members.

They will not only strengthen your society, but you can help them to be~

come American citizens. Do not let "Americanization" be carried on by the forces of intolerance and exploitation, to turn the newcomers into voting cattle.

* *

*

One of the difficulties encountered in our societies is that the young people admitted to full membership know almost nothing of parliamentary prccedure. To meet this difficulty the societies should establish Junior Societies for the members of the active classes. This will give the boys an opportunity to become familiar with the routine of meetings, to learn the duties of the various officers, etc. They could have discussions or debates about current events that are not too difficult. During the summer months hikes into the woods and fields could be undertaken.

By developing this plan you will find that when the young people are admitted to the Turnverein, they will understand the business of the meet- ings and will not be bored. These junior societies might be organized as Boy Scouts, and like the "Wandervogel" in Germany could utilize their ex- cursions into the country to study Botany, Geology, Birds, and Natural Science generally. Remember that our future rests upon the young people in our societies. Hold them - give them something to do - prepare them to take up your tasks!

* * *

Remember always that you are Turners, members of a great federation of societies extending from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Make yourself familiar with the principles of this Turnerbund, and put them into practice, for the welfare of our country and all humanity.

Many societies are still using the old name, American Gymnastic Union, instead of the distinctive American Turnerbund, approved by the last national convention. The change should be made as rapidly as convenient, when- ever new stationery is printed, in press matter, etc. Turner, Turnverein, Turnerbund, and Turning are good English words, like Kindergarten and its derivatives. A Turner is more than a Gymnast. Let us make the word

"Turner" familiar to our fellow citizens!

But let us also make ourselves more familiar with the full meaning of that term. The Principles and Statutes of the American Turnerbund, Jn English, are ready in a new edition, which can be ordered from the National Headquarters at $4.00 a hundred copies, single copies 5 cents. It is a great little book, which every member should study, especially the Fundamental Principles. By using these principles as political guide-posts, we can show our fellow citizens how to attain government of the people, by the people, for the people. At present we have government of the people, by the poli- ticians, for the corporations.

The Turner principles, briefly summarized, are as follows: Liberty against all oppression; Tolerance, against all fanaticism; Reason, against all superstition; Justice, against all exploitation! Free speech, free press, free assembly for the discussion of all questions, so that men and women may think unfettered and order their lives by the dictates of conscience-such is our ideal.

5

To realize this ideal the Turnerbund was founded. Physical training is a means to an end-it must serve to rouse and strengthen mental .activity.

* * *

. Those who wish to become better acquainted with these principles of liberty and progress, should (if they understand German) read the "Turn- zeitung" every week. It is our official organ. It costs less than one cent a day. It should be supported until something better can be offered in its

· place. The subscription price is only $3 a year. The address is Amerikanische Turnzeitung

Turner Publishing Co.

New Ulm, Minn.

. ~ut a dollar bill into an envelope for four months' subscription, and mall ~t now. More readers Will enable the publisher to improve the contents.

In this way everyone can help. If you do not understand German take some other liberal and progressive publication. The following are hi~hly recom- mended:

The Nation

Weekly-$5.00 a year.

20 Vesey St., New York, N. Y.

These publications are recommended because they are apparently in- dependent and liberal, giving unpopular opini.ons a chance to be heard, against bunk and propagand~. They appeal to intelligent readers, such as we hope we are. They are not mtended for the Morons of Main Street, such as we hope we are not.

* * *

.A~ the "Turnzeitung" is our paper, so the Normal College at Indian- apolis is our school. The Normal College is one of the best educational in- stitutions in this country for young people after leaving the high school.

(4)

Every Turner with growing children should find out what this College has to offer. Write for a catalogue to

Normal College of Turnerbund 415 East Michigan Street

Indianapolis, Ind.

In connection with the College there is a Summer Camp on beautiful Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. Any Turner can spend his vacation there amid congenial spirits. We should strive to establish Elkhart Lake as the Turner Chautauqua of America. You should get information about "Camp Brosius" before planning to go to other resorts. Apply also to the Normal College for such information.

The Turnerbund, the Turnzeitung and the Normal College are the three cornerstones of the pyramid in whose treasure-chamber our ideals are en- shrined. Each of these must help to sustain the other two. Every Turner must lend a hand in building up the great edifice. Every Turner should know the reason why he is a Turner.

Most gratifying, therefore, are the indications from all quarters of new activity in mental training, as reported to the National Executive Committee.

What has your society undertaken? What are you, reader of these lines, doing in this field?

... ... ...

Each individual member has an important duty to perform. He is part of the great whole. Each unit must fulfill its function, if the whole is to prosper. The National Executive Committee wishes to stimulate new life, to attain new goals. Nothing can be attained unless the Districts, the Societies, and the individual members do their share. This Committee is ready and eager to do its share. Its business is to assist the societies with ad vice or lend a hand in every difficulty.

If you have any queries or suggestions, write them to the National Executive Committee, English or German. The Committee desires to secure names and addresses of members interested in various activities re- lated to mental culture.

Who is interested most in the Singing Section? If there is no chorus, who wishes to start one7

Who is interested most in the Dramatic Section? If there is no dramatic club, who wishes to start one?

Who is interested most in the evening school, or Science Sunday School?

If there is no school, who wishes to start classes in German, in English, and in civics?

Who is interested most in mental training? Who wishes to start an

"Open Forum" for the discussion of public questions and the development of speakers?

Whoever reads this, and feels an interest in any of these activities, is asked to send his name and address to the National Executive Committee.

A postcard is sufficient. The Committee is in existence to serve and to guide.

The Committee expects the societies to turn to it for such service and to follow such guidance. Unless there is close cooperation and harmonious endeavor, nothing can be accomplished. But it we are in fraternal accord, each at his post of duty, laboring to upbuild the Turnerbund, we will not in

7

futur~ ne.ed to be ashamed as we compare our growth with that of other or?a~izations that have not as good a foundation to build on nor such noble prmciples to uphold.

• • •

It affords me .special pleasure to announce a gift by Turner Theodore Ahrens. for educational purposes within the Turnerbund. Turner Ahrens sent his .check for $5,000, and announced that he was willing to double that amount i~ other Turners would assist in making up a Permanent Educational Fund ~o msure the perpetuation of our cherished Turner principles and the e~tension of o.ur work. Turner Ahrens showed the spirit of a true Turner in his letter, saymg:

. "I am giving this s:im. as an acknowledgment of the benefits I have re- ceiv~d from membership m a Turnverein. This has done more for my physical health than doctors or medicines could have done· as mu h f

. grow as any university could have done. I am only paying some- thmg. I owe and seek no honor-and if there is any honor attached to the creati?n of a fund, I want many other Turners from everywhere to have a share m such honor."

It has been decided to call this fund the Jahn Educational Fund and tot y to raise $100,000 within a year, with a Million as the ultimate goal ' r
