The impact of improved natural resource management (NRM) on irrigated lowland rice systems was examined using propensity score matching. The results showed that adoption of IRF has a positive and statistically significant effect on household food expenditure, total income and expenditure, total farm income and amount of fish consumed.
Saidur Rahman, A. Sattar Mandal
Overall, the article provided evidence that promoting IRF agriculture is important for improving income, expenditure and food security in rural areas, specifically for the marginalized extremely poor indigenous (tribal/Adivashi) small farming households in Bangladesh.

This study aimed to assess the benefits and impacts of contract farming on three agrarian reform cooperatives (namely HARBCO, SFARBEMCO and SEARBEMCO). A logistic regression model was also used to identify factors that influence ARB's perception of contract farming.
Virchow
The results showed that, on average, the three cooperatives do not benefit from contract farming participation. The results of logistic regression suggested that years of education, gender and income influence ARB's perception of contract farming.

Despite significant increases in rice yields, farmers' incomes did not increase significantly in the last three decades. This paper analyzed the value chain of high grain rice variety (BRRI dhan50) and recommended strategies for its large-scale production. The results showed that adoption of BRRI dhan50 has increased significantly in the last three years.
The objective of this paper was to identify the socio-economic constraints and opportunities for improving the marketing efficiency of the long-distance sweet potato value chain in PNG. Bangladesh has made tremendous progress in rice production over the past three decades, with production growing at three percent per year. This paper investigated the technology adoption, productivity, yield gaps and production efficiency of different categories of rice farmers (who were classified according to their farm size) in Bangladesh.

Cheaper price of rice during harvest season is one of the main reasons for lower margins in rice farming as perceived by most farmers. It is suggested that the declaration of the procurement price of rice and lower farm input prices are good incentives for farmers to farm rice in the long term. This study used the stochastic frontier approach to measure the technical efficiency of the farmers in two upazilas (sub-districts) in Bangladesh in terms of crop cultivation.
Maximum likelihood estimation and ordinary least square regression techniques were used to estimate the parameters of the stochastic production frontier. The paper applied the generalized Cobb-Douglas production function to estimate factor productivity and returns to scale of agricultural farms in three different seasons. The total sample size in both states is 80 and wholesalers as a whole represent almost 90 percent of the market in the regions studied.

The Role of Seasonal Migration in Asset Accumulation and Poverty Escape: The Case of Dokur Village in Andhra Pradesh, India. They also used it as a means of employment, income generation during the Lenten season, and a way out of poverty. Researchers have also tried to understand the role of temporary migration in accumulating assets and moving out of poverty.
The study revealed that seasonal migration helped many households escape poverty, even after experiencing a decade of drought. An in-depth analysis of households' accumulation behavior over time also provided important insights into their coping mechanisms and the process of getting out of poverty. Impact of rural-urban migration on food security at origin in Bangladesh: A NELM analysis.

The increasing importance of the rural non-agricultural economy (RNFE) in the livelihood of the rural population has been reported in recent studies. It identified different types of rural non-farm activities (RNF) and determined the contribution of different RNF activities to household employment and income. The paper also sought to understand the participation behavior of family members in off-farm employment and factors affecting rural non-farm activities.
Recent literature suggests an increasing importance of non-agricultural economic activities in the rural areas of many Asian countries. This study examined the trends in rural non-farm economic activities in Bangladesh over the past 25 years. The article also sought to understand the participation behavior of household members in non-farm employment and factors that enable or prevent them from participating in RNF activities.

Evidence in one aspect shows that significant diversification from the farm to the non-farm sector by small and marginal rural farming households in recent years has led to a significant change in the structure of the rural economy. The rise of the rural non-farm sector has opened up the rural job creation market. The sustainability of the construction sector, the highest employment generating non-farm sector, is questionable.
Small and marginal farmers tend to engage in multiple occupations for livelihood and are involved in interdependent agricultural and non-agricultural economic activities. The study also conducted a thorough investigation of the causality effect of both farm and non-farm growth structure. The study suggested that the improvement in agriculture is a prerequisite for the survival of the non-agricultural sector as well as for small and marginal farming households.

However, this region is and will be strongly affected by climate change; this is because people in the Mekong Delta (especially in coastal provinces) face the challenge of deep salt water intrusion in the dry season. With this in the background, this paper attempted to empirically determine the rural-urban income gap in the northern regions of Malaysia, which covered the states of Perak, Penang, Kedah and Perlis. High-yielding varieties along with chemical fertilizers, pesticides and irrigation were introduced in the name of Green Revolution in Bangladesh to feed the large population of the country.
This resulted in deterioration of soil health and reduction in productivity in the long run. The dominant method of establishing rice in the rice-wheat growing areas of the Indo-Gangetic Plain is transplanting. It was found that farmers fear germination failure after planting rice seeds directly in the soil through DSR technology.

The available evidence showed that South Asian countries are experiencing a significant decline in population growth, changes in population structure, reduction in family size, decline in the proportion of rural and agricultural population, increased migration of rural youth (which leading to deserted villages and abandoned farmland), rapid urbanization causing rural emigration, declining youth entry into agriculture, aging farmers and increased feminization of agriculture. Moreover, these changes are expected to be more rapid in the coming decades with far-reaching impacts on the nature and organization of Asian rice cultivation. This paper examined the depth and breadth of the transformation in the demographic structure of the agricultural population across countries in South Asia.
This paper used primary long-term panel data of Bangladesh and secondary data from various South Asian countries. The number of farm households, the size of the farm population and the agricultural labor force have started to decline in most South Asian countries, both in absolute terms and in percentage terms. A growing farm labor shortage has increased the use of hired labor in agriculture and raised farm labor wage rates by 230 percent over the past decade.

Given the important economic contribution of the traditional dairy value chain, public policies affecting informal milk markets and actors will need to be risk-based, not hazard-based. This study has the following specific objectives: (1) to briefly describe the operation of the rice fields. A model used to measure the welfare cost of the commitment program is constructed from the way the government intervenes in rice markets.
Vietnam is one of the three largest rice exporters in the world, accounting for 22.71 percent of the world's total rice export in 2013. It has been hypothesized that one of the crucial limitations of AR adoption is the small difference in AR prices and LQR. The findings of this study suggested that one of the ways to improve the adoption of AR and reduce the area of LQR is to increase the price of the market price for AR.

To ensure adequate availability and accessibility of rice seeds, initiatives are needed to formalize rice seed trade. It is expected that such an initiative can increase the availability and accessibility of quality rice seeds to farmers at the right time and at an affordable price for both countries. This presentation included an assessment of the potential for such trade and policy responses that will promote rice seed trade.
It also sought to highlight experiences from other countries that may be relevant to promoting rice seed trade between the two countries. Intellectual property rights and related issues seem to be important reasons which hinder the formal trade of rice seeds between Bangladesh and India. This presentation sought to stimulate a discussion on creating a framework for cooperation on intellectual property rights that could help both countries be more open to trade in rice seeds.

This presentation highlighted some key factors that determine the efficiency of the rice seed chain and may limit the production of exportable surplus seed. This paper aimed to discuss the agricultural land issues in Japan from the point of view of the development strategy for an economy in the middle and high income stage of economic development. The paper also showed why structural change in the land-intensive agricultural sector has become one of the most important policy agendas for the Japanese government.
The paper examined the effect of the Farm Constitution that was introduced in 1952 and the policy effort to promote structural changes in agriculture thereafter. The characteristics of the inheritance system of farm households and the relationships between the farm householder and the local community were investigated. This article reported the attitudes of the next generation educational dairy farm (EDF) successors currently working on these farms, compared to their counterparts in regular dairy farms in Japan.
