Assignment Meeting 7
Consider at least 7 terminologies and their meaning based on your educational background. Make paragraphs by using the terminologies. Students can elaborate the materials and the material should be presented next week.
• Electricity is the set of physical phenomena associated with the presence and motion of matter that has a property of electric charge.
• power plant is a set of equipment and machines used to generate electrical energy through a process of energy transformation from various energy sources.
• Nuclear energy is a form of energy released from the nucleus, which is an atomic nucleus consisting of protons and neutrons.
• Nuclear fission is a nuclear reaction in which the nucleus of an atom splits into smaller pieces (lighter nuclei), which often produce free photons and neutrons (in the form of gamma rays), and release enormous amounts of energy.
• Electric generator is a machine used to generate electrical energy from a mechanical energy source. The working principle of an electric generator is electromagnetic induction.
• Thermal reactor is a reactor that uses thermal neutrons in the reaction process. In a thermal reactor, a moderator is needed to absorb the energy of the fast neutrons generated from the fission reaction so that they are in a thermal neutron state when they strike the nucleus.
• Steam turbine is a prime mover that converts the potential energy of steam into kinetic energy and then converts it into mechanical energy in the form of rotation of the turbine shaft.
• Electricity network is an interconnected network that functions to distribute electricity from generators to users.
A nuclear power plant is a power plant that uses heat from nuclear fission to convert water into steam, then drives a generator to produce electricity. This technology has been around for more than 60 years. The first nuclear energy power plant to produce enough electricity for the grid was opened in June 1954 in Russia. The first full-scale nuclear power plant (Calder Hall) began operating in the UK in October 1956. Since then, nuclear power plants have become an important part of modern development. For the working principle itself, it begins with the extraction of energy from the nucleus of the uranium atom through its fission (nuclear fission) with a nuclear reaction. Atoms have internal bonds connecting their sub- particles (electrons, neutrons and protons). When splitting, these bonds break and release the internal binding energy within the atoms that holds the particles apart. Just like other types of thermal power plants, nuclear power plants have a steam turbine connected to an electric generator. Then a thermal reactor is used to generate heat and create steam. This steam is what drives the steam turbine and causes the generator to produce electricity. This nuclear power plant is able to produce enough energy to meet the minimum needs of the electricity network for more than 24 hours. There are many advantages to switching from fossil fuel-based power generation to nuclear power. Here are some of the advantages; Produce less pollution, Low operating cost, Produce large amounts of energy, Can damage the environment, and Harmful for human health
