The bulletin* is octavo or quarto in size, depending on the needs of the presentation. Since 1902 articles relating to the botanical collections of the Museum have been published in a series of bulletins entitled Contributions from the United States National Herbarium. Species of the group Poikiloptera have some eukrayohelean characteristics, such as the extreme reduction of the first radial cell, long.

The antennal ratio (abbreviated All in our descriptions) is the value obtained by dividing the combined lengths of the distal 5 by. Arm: The length of the arm is measured from the basal arch to the tip of the arm; the rib ratio (CR) is the value obtained by dividing the length of the rib, measured from the basal arch to the end of the second radial cell, by the length of the wing. Abdomen: The length of the spermatheca is taken by measuring from the tip of the sclerotized part of the neck to the tip of the sperm.

10 U.S. NATIONAL MUSEUM BULLETIN 2 83

Female antenna (fig. 1-40) with III-Xoval to barely cylindrical with smooth contour, and XI-XV strongly cylindrical with rough contour. Male antenna with well-developed plumes; XIII-XV long and strongly cylindrical with wrinkled contours, III-XII oval to slightly elongated with vasi-shaped base. Maxillary palpus in both sexes, III and V being inferior to slightly unequal, III with short to long sensilla, usually borne in a small, round, shallow, subapical sensory pit.

AR 1.71; X longer than IX

Legs: Color pattern as in festiva, but the subapical pale ring on hind femur prominent, the dark markings intense on each side. Similar to the female with the usual gender differences; dorsal color pattern of abdomen as in figure 76e. Genitalia (fig. 76/-A) of the festiva type, but tergum IX more quadrate (closer to notata type); basistyle short, the base of the basidorsal process relatively broad; dististyle subequal in length to basal style; aedeagal sclerites slender at base, widened distally to curved tip; paramere a broad, curved, heavily sclerotized blade with curved tip than infestiva, but slightly longer.

REVISION OF SPECIES OF STILOBEZZIA KIEFFER 91

AR 1.76; IX and X subequal

Similar to the female with the usual sexual differences; mesal dark spots absent on terga II and III (fig. 75/). Genitalia (Fig. 75 b-d) similar to notata, tergum IX elongate and distal part of basistyle rather long and slender; dististyle as long as the basistyle, not narrowed in the middle part, distal point usually more strongly calcified than the proximal part; aedeagal sclerite and parameres sub-equal in length, aedeagal sclerite slightly stronger distally, both with paler tips slightly bent ventromesally. This species is closely related to notata, from which it differs significantly in its larger size, having the halter bud whitish apically, the abdomen more petiolate, the male lacking the dark mesal spot on abdominal tergum II, the female spermatheca colorless, the male aedeagal sclerites more slender, and paradistal legs -peak.

Legs: Color pattern as in notata, but much less intense; right leg dark almost to the base, but of weak intensity; tarsomeres IV and V.

REVISION OF SPECIES OF STILOBEZZIA KIEFFER 93

94 U.S. NATIONAL MUSEUM BULLETIN 2 83

Similar to female with normal sexual differences; abdominal color pattern (Fig. 77g) more extensive, complete to margins of terga IV to VIII. Genitalia (Fig. 77c-e) with tergum IX short and rounded; basetyle short and strong distad of mesal expansion, basidorsal process mesally thin; distilog as long as basistyle, mod-.

96 U.S. NATIONAL MUSEUM BULLETIN 283

Genitalia (Fig. 78f-h) similar to notata, but tergum IX not as elongate; basal style shorter beyond mesal swelling; dististyle elongate, strongly sclerotized, slightly narrower in the middle with blunt tip; aedeagal sclerites more slender at base Parameres as stout as distal part of aedeagal sclerite, sinuate and heavily sclerotized except as flexure of relatively stout, pointed apex. Females of supernotata can typically be distinguished by the extreme reduction of mesal pale spots on tergum IV, slightly darker lateral edges of the scutal vittae, the more saturated dark markings on the hind femora, and the higher frequency of the lightly sclerotized spermathecae, which also have shorter, more slender necks . Based on his figure of the male genitalia and assuming that his reference to the abdominal color pattern described by Johannsen for perspicua was of a notata pattern, Macfie's (1934) description of notata from Sumatra applies to supernotata.

The synonymy of inusitata (Johannsen) was confirmed by examination of the holotype kindly loaned by Cornell University with the permission of Dr. inscription and figures of Tokunaga (1962) and Tokunaga and Murachi. Special Notes: Kieffer's descriptions of lineata and biroi and Johannsen's aberrans indicate a small and ill-defined IRC that applies to inermipes and not to quatei, a new species that is otherwise nearly identical except for characteristic male parameters.

We could not find any consistent pattern in thoracic or abdominal color variation.

106 U.S. NATIONAL MUSEUM BULLETIN 283

Wing (fig. 81e): Light brown, with 11 small dark brown spots on figure; 1 above IRC, r-m and stem M; 1 above and immediately behind bead-like swelling near apex of R4+5; a paler hourglass-shaped spot subapically on anterior border of cell R5; 4 linear spots just before tips of veins M1} M2, M3+4 and Cux; 2 linear spots just beyond midlength of veins Mx and M2; 1 middle length of M3+4; and 1 at the junction of the mediocubital fork. Abdomen: Terga brown without color pattern; setae (fig. 81/) sparse, mostly towards the sides; I with group of 15-20 setae in each.
