The
presence ofan
apical foramen in I. bellaand
/. ornatelln would separate thegenus from Paterina, but,from acareful study of allthe evidence attainable,Iam
led to question the presenceof atrue apical foramenin either species. Unlessthere areother characters thantlioseshown by
thefalse areaand
i)seudodeltidiumand
the angle atwhich theyslope, itwill beimi^racticable togenerically separate I. bellaand
I. J((br<tf1oricus
and
the other speciesmentioned.Inhis original description, Mr. Billings says:
In the specinieu above figured there is au apertureiuthe beak, but in another thereisno appearance whateverof aperforation.'
Professor
Whiteaves
writes me, under date of July 23, 189G, that there are no si)ecimens or electrotypes of the types of I. bella in the collections of the Geological Survey of Canada, nor of the closely allied species ofthesame
genus from Topsail Head, mentionedby
Mr. Billings.Under
the circumstances, nothing can be done but to decidefrom Mr. Billings's descriptionand
figure the charactersof the genusand
species,and
refer to thespecies theform that can bestbe identifiedwith the descriptionand
figure as the specific type of the genus. This appears to be the species from theYork
limestone of Pennsylvania.In a fine series of Iphidea bella from tlie
Lower
Cambrian, south of Emigsville,York
County,Pennsjdvania, thecharacteristicsoftliegenusand
speciesarestrikingly wellshown. Innoneofthespecimensisthere in the ventral valvean indication of an apical pedicleopening.The
dorsalvalve isslightlyelevated,
and
in the half dozen well-preserved specimens no trace has been observed ofany
false area or pseudo- deltidium; butin 7.pajmulathefalsearea isevenmore
clearlydefined than in the ventral valve,and
the pseudodeltidium is ])resent as a depressed concave covering ofmore
than one half of the triangular space inside the narrow area on ea(;h side.The
area on the dorsal valvehasalsobeen observedin I, oruatellaand
/. labradorka.Doctor liinnarsson, indescribing/.ornatcUa, speaksof the presence of a minute foramen; but, afterthestudy of several finely preserved

he considered to be an apical foramenis a depressionin the apex of theshell infrontof theincurved beak,Avhich representsa foramen whichwas
piesent in oneof tlieembryonic(nepi- onic) statues,and was
subsequently lost. This would involve the crowding- out, asit were, of thepedicle posteriorly, the only evidence of itsi)resence in the adultbeing the narrow, slightlydepressed slitat theapexof the valve insome
specimens.The
pedicle in the adult shell is i)rotruded between thetwo
valvesand
separated from the embryonici)edicle openingby
the growth of a pseudodeltidium.The
examination of thesomewhat
closely allied form, /.panmda^
shows thei»resence in
some
specimensof theapicaldepressionand
itsabsence in others. In an undescribed species, I. siqyerba, still
more
closely approaching the type /. bella in external appearance, thereis
no trace of an apical slit or foramen. lu another species associated with /. superba {I. crcnistria) theapex is rounded, whilein a
somewhat
similar but distinct form [1.penki), froni the GallatinEiver valleyof Montana, the apical slit is as clearly
shown
as inI. ornatella, butnotany
apical foramen.Messrs. Hall and Clarke illustrate aspecimen of J. bellashowing an apical foramen, but in the description of the figure the statement is
made
thattheforamen is not altogetherdistinct inthe specimen.'The
systematicposition of the genus Iphulea appears to be in the Js^eotremata of Beecher,^ possibly with characters that nearly placeIt in the Protremata. If the pedicle
was
apical in its early stagesand
inclosedby
shell growth,and
subsequentlywas crowded back
of a pseudodeltidium, it passed through the Xeotrematic stage to the Protrematic.
The
presence of an obscure listrium in front of the ai)ex of /. bella, I. ornatella,and some
specimens of I. pealei, tends to support thisview.We
alsohave toconsiderthe area ofthe dorsal valve asshown
in I.pannula. In this species there is a ratiier deep, convex pseudodeltidium in the ventral valve,and
a clearl^^ defined, depressed pseudodeltidium on the dorsal valve between the narrowfalse areas. Thereis alsopresent a narrow
median
groove extending from beneath the apex of the valve to the posterior margin of the pseudodeltidium. It is similar in appearance to the pedicle groove of the ventral valve of Obolnsand
Rhinobohis. This suggests thatitmay
be the pedicle valve; but thepresence of the listrium orembryo
pedicle scar ontheconical valveis opposed to theinterpretation.
It
may
be urged that Iphideais a trueAtreftiatic genus, the pedicle never having been inclosed and thesliton the ventral valvebeing only a depression without special significance. Thismay
be so, but the impression it conveystome

rockssouthward from Vermont,thefirsttypeofIphidea

with is/.stissingensis,whichoccursintheMid- dleCambrian
of Dutchess County,New
York. This is fairly welldis- tinguished by itssurfacecharactersfrom I. lahradoricaand
its variety sicantonensis,butatthe nextlocality tothesouth, ineastern Tennessee, four miles north of Eogersville, in the Ivogersvilleshale of the Middle Cambrian,w;)S found a form that is practically identicalwith thenorth- ern species or its varietj^,as farasit is possible tocompare specimens preserved in limestonewith those preserved inshale.The same
form also occurs intheMiddleCambrian
shales of theCowan
Creek section, Cherokee County, Alabama. Thereis,however, adifferencein thesur- face stria' that distinguishesitfrom 7.lahradoricaand
itsvarietyand
7.stissi)i(jen.sis. It is the tendency to crenulation of the stria' in nearly
all the specimens that have been examined. This in extreme cases goessofar as toapproach the surface, so characteristic of 7.pannula.

parts in 'fremafobolxs insignis, Matthew,' but the foramen is quitedifferent,and generally the interiorofthedorsalvalvealsoserves to distinguish the forms.To
J)iscinop.sis, Matthew,- there isa resem- blance inthemarkingsof theinteriorofthe dorsalvalve. Discinopsis, however, is founded upon a small, apparently corneous shell, which so far as known, has no area or pseudodeltidium, and it is closely related to Acrothele. Yorkia differs from Acrothelc in its pronounced area,substanceof shell,and
])lace of origin ofvascular trunks. I do notknow

Shell subcircular to suborbicular in outline, moderatelyconvex, with the apices of the valves marginal. Ventral (pedicle) valve highest at the beak, which is truncated

a circularforaminal opening; car- dinal slope angularand
slightly incurved, so as to form a narrowfalse area on each side of the slightly convex, rather broad pseudo- deltidium.

then incurve and cross the pseudodeltidium.The
dorsal (brachial) valve has a well defined area, withan obscure pseudodeltidium parting it midway.The
cast of the interior of the valveshows two broad,shearshaped diverging ridges thatextend from near the apex to the center of the shell.Xumerous
vascular markings extend outward from the ridges. These ridgesmay
indicatethe mus- cular sears or merely themain
trunks of the vascular depressions.The
surfaceoftheareaismarked

one specimen of this shellwas
found associated with Linnars- sonia and fragments of OleneUns, in a fine gray limestone interbedded intheLower Cambrian

Clarke.' It difiers,however, inthepresenceofanobscure pseudodeltidium,and

lineof demarcation.A
section of the cast of the ventral valveindicates that itwas
thin at the margin, increasing in thicknesstoward the apex,where
itwas
asthick inproportion asin the ventralvalve of the Yorlia iraimeri.The
cast Fig. 4c shows that on the interior of the shell there is the opening of a large foramen which taperstoa small apex,and
that Justin advanceoftheforamen a short median depression occurs, on each side of which a slight elon-gated tubercle arose. Outside of the tubercle a small, elongated, depressed muscle scar is seen, which
was
separated irom a deep, brronglymarked
vascular sinusby
a very narrow, sharp ridge.The
vasculartrunks starton thesides of the pseudodeltidium, justbackof the foraminal opening, curving around it to the central muscle scarsand
thenextending forward tothe center of the shell. Small, round, lateralscars appearto beindicatedbackofa sharp ridge thatbounds
the posterolateralmargin of the vascular trunks.Dorsal(brachial) valvewith a nearly transverse hingeline that is
considerablynarrower than the greatest widthof theshell.
The
car- dinal slopeforms a rather narrow area, which is brokenmidway by
a low, slightly convex pseudodeltidium.The
cast oftheinteriorshows that therewas
present in theinterior of the shell amedian ridge that extended from underthe beak forwardbeyond
the center of the shell5
oneach sideof themedian ridge, beneath the
umbonal
])ortion of the shell, a hollow occurs between the ridgeand what
apjiears to be a slightly depressed path of advance of a muscle scar.The
features describedoccurupon
a siliceous cast preserving the natural convexity of the shell. In a compressed specimen in the shales in which the siliceous nodules occur, themedian
ridge is well shown,and
extendsto the center of the shell, where a pair of small anterior musclescars restagainstit. In frontof the scars the ridge sends off a
number
of tinelinesor striietoward thefrontof the shell; theantero-lateral scars occuron each side of the ridge, about one-half the distani-efrom the beak to the front margin ofthe shell.The
posterolateralscars are alsoindicated toward the posterolateral margin.Surface of both valves
marked by
very tine concentric stri;eand
extremely tineradiatinglines ofgrowth. Substanceofshellcorneous.Itis not])reservedin thesiliceous nodules, but is
shown
as a black, almostphosphaticshell in theshales.Formation and locality.
