PROSPEC'rUS

OF THE

N'E'"W" SERIES

OJ' THE

NASHVILLE JOURNAL

OF

lfehitinr anh ~urueru.

It is not unknown to the Medical profession that this Journal during the decade from 1851 to 1861, enjoyed a very large c,irculation. We are pretty certain that in 1861 it had a larger circu lation than any other Medical Periodical in the United States. Since the beginning of 1862 ito publication bas been suspended. Tho former Senior Editor proposes to become his own Pub-- lisher, and with the assistance of his colleague, Prof. Paul F. Eve, to edit a New Series. He baa therefore provided a new Press and 1\faterial, and secured the services of an experienced com positor. The typographical and mechanical execution of the work we feel asstrred will be sat.

isfactory. As to the editing we feel ourself better qualified now than when we conducted , the old series.

'y

c have, we hope, a good deal of unexpended force and grit in us, which, with 8

modicum of enthusiasm and worldly prudence might be made available for good. VVe do not desire to make any money by the Journal, and if we did we have experience enough to know that we could not do it-but we hope to be useful in our generation.

Assuming for the first time the full responsibility of Publisher, a new relation arises between the public and ourself. A pecuniary r elation, except between misers and professional skinners and skinnecsis a very delicate one. Between gentlemen,~ the subject cannot Ue discussed-we cannot hereafter allude to it, and would therefore suggest an inflexible rule here which makes Bubscquent allusion unnecessary.

In evt'ry case, without exception, the Journal must be paid for in advance. At the end of the time subscribed for. the JournuJ wiU stop. This is not to be regarded as questioning the ability or willingness of the late subscribers to pay for it,-not at all. 'Vhen thesubscriptionexpires he is no longer a subscriber-and delicacy would suggest the impropriety of teasing him into are- newal of his subscription by forwarding him the Journal. The Journal will be published monthly in numhcrs of Eighty pages each. Six numbars will make a Volume of nearly Five Hundred pages, so that there will be two Vc!umes a year.

Subscription price for One Year [two volumes] ... $5 00

ANN 0 UN CEMENT--1866-7'.

THE regular course of instruction will begin on the first Monday of No- vember, 1866, and end on the first day of March, 1867. The Museum, Cabinets, Library, Buildings and appurtenances, are as perfect as ever,

· and the old corps of teachers each in his place, except Professor Buchan- an, removed by death, and whose place has been filled by Professor Briggs, formerly Professor of Practical Anatomy.

Duri!!g the last five years our Museum has been visited by more than five hundred physicians, representing nearly all the States in the Union, and most of those of Europe. There is but one opinion-that it is splen- did, copious and unique. This la::<t feature it owes to the wonderful artistic genius of Dr. Thos. B. Buchanan, son of our late colleague, Prof.

Buchanan. The preparations and illustrations of this young artist have excited the astonishment of those perfectly familiar with all the museums of Europe. Prof. Buchanan's cabinet of diseased bones is a wonderful collection, while the fractures and dislocations, with the action of in- volved muscles, prepared by Dr. T. B. Buchanan, excite the admiration of all.

Our Hospital, one of the very finest buildings in the United States, was burned down in 1863. We are now arranging for a large plank building on Summer street, 25 feet wide and 170 feet long, two stories, which will make an excellent hospital. This we hope to have in full operation by the meeting of the next class.

The Faculty have resolved, without regard to expense, to keep thi~

College in a condition to offer the best possible facilities to students for the attainment of a thorough medical education. All the physiological experiments read of' in books are here repeated before the class. Our enthusiastic and untiring young physiologist determining to be second to none in this branch, 'as he has heretofore demonstrated himself to be in Anatomy and Surgery. The entire Faculty and Trustees are full of hope for the future, not doubting that the ancient triumph of the depart-- mentis destined to be surpassed in coming years. Our last class justi- ,fies this prediction. Under the circumstances it was a very large one,

more than twice as large as we had dared to hope for. It will be seen that the Department never suspended, having nine graduates in 1863, the darkest hour of its existence, and in December, 1864, while the battle of Nashville raged around the city, the lectures 'continued; and there were

at the altars of the College during these terrible days, a class, furnishing in the following March, twenty-six graduates. Nor did we ever see lJ.

more attentive class than while Fort Negley, near the foot of which stands the College, was vomiting fire and smoke in a manner forcibly to recall Bulwar's description of the last days of Pompii. A million of armed men have passed and repassed the College without seriously interrupting the even tenor of its way-it has been converted into a hospital, but the lectures went on amid the dead and dying. For two weeks before the battle of Nashville, it was the center of a vast encampment, and from its roof could be heard the distant strains of "Dixie" and " Who's been here since I've been gone," from the Confederate bands upon the adjacent heights, but the voices of its ministering priests were not hushed, but in humble cadence mingled with the external uproarious discord. If its vitalities could not be chilled into suspended animation under such cir- cumstances, its friends need scarcely fear anything that can happen to it hereafter. We ask the four thousand who have worshipped at its altars especially, like the exiled Israelite, amid the sore trials of the times, to let their thoughts occasionally revert to the TEMPLE, and when its pres- ent ministers shall have been gathered to their fathers, may their old Neophytes place upon the tablets of their memory the most lovely of all words in our vernacular, the one lone word FAITHFUL.

The Anatomical Room will be opened on the first Monday in October, and every facility afforded for the prosecution of the corner-stone study.

FEES.

For tickets to the entire Course .... ... .. ... ... ... .. $105 00 Matriculating Fee.. . . . ... . . . ... .... .. ... .. . Graduating Fee .... . . ... .. .. ... ... ... . .. . . . .. .

Dissecting Ticket. . . . .. . . 500 25 00 10 ()() Students, after matricul~.ting, have the option of attending the lectures of one or more Professors, or of all, as may suit their convenience.

The fee for a course of lectures on a single branch is $15.

To graduate, the student must previously have attended two full courses of lectures. He must be 21 years of age, have studied medicine under a preceptor three years, including the time spent in attending lectures, and be of good moral character. A ticket from any reputable school counts as a ticket here . .

Boarding, in good houses, about $5 00 a week.

THESES.

In the last announcement we intentionally omitted to say anything about theses. Accordingly several candidates omitted to write any. The school at Charleston, of high Southern authority, in the announcement of' the next session formerly excludes this absurdity. They are of no use, and rob the candidate of precious time when he has not a moment tQ i!pare.

.ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE SESSION OF

1866-7. 7

"Compositions" are well enough for boarding school misses to give their delighted mamas an airing amid the stars on commencement day, as these "essays" are read aloud, but a thesis, arter all the labor expend- ed upon it to be pigeonholed and chronologized for post-millenial resurJ tion, is an absurdity that sensible men ought to discard at once.

TEXT BOOKS.

Every student ought to have a Medical Dictionary, a Dissector, an Anatomy, a Chemistry, and a Physiology. He needs no other books while attending lectures. He has not time to read much. In old times when there were but few books, and it was the business of the millions to un- derstand what one man had written, it was the duty of the professor to explain and expound to his class the texts of that book, In modern times teachers make text books, and explain what they have written to their classes, and sell the books to the students. It pays admirably, still a sensible stu'.!ent could not help thinking that the Text Book maker ought to have made his book so plain as not to need any explanation. He would think what he could not do in his closet with his pen, he could scarcely do in the lecture room with his tongue.

We say then, get a Medical Dectionary-one is about as good as anoth- er, only medical terms multiply so rapidly that a Medical Dictionary ought not to be more than a year or two old. Hobly's is the best.

Any "Dissector" you can find in a bookstore-the "London Dissector"

is a good one.

Wilson's Anatomy is good.

Dalton's Physiology Prof. Briggs prefers.

Fowns' Chemistry is good, and Prof. Lindsley endorses it. ·

You will want more books afterwards, but these are all you want to begin with, ar.d as you progress in your studies you will learn what you need.

DIRECTIONS FOR STUDENTS.

When the boat or cars arrive at Nashville, take a hack, which will bring you and your trunk to the College for fifty cents-there is no necessity for a hotel bill-come right to the College like it was a hotel, enquire for the Janitor, he will show you many boarding houses.

BOARD.

We are sure it will not rule higher than $5 OOin our best houses. Street cars run by the College door from the Public Square, nearly three miles out, branching in various directions. In good weather the student can·

walk, but in bad he can go in a car as far as it goes, for seven cents. Wber ever the cars go there will be boarding houses.
