Ceramics museum to install new exhibition 7/24/03
The Schein-Joseph International Museum of Ceramic Art at the Alfred University will close its current exhibition,
"From the Collection: Selected New Gifts", on Sunday, July 27th. The Museum will be closed until Aug. 9 to allow it to mount its new exhibition, "Irvin Tepper: When Cups Speak," which will remain on display through Dec. 19."From the Collection: Selected New Gifts" was curated by Susan Kowalczyk, the Museum's collections manager. It includes work by various ceramic artists from the United States with additional work from China,Finland, Japan, Russia and Wales. The pieces are among thosedonated to the Museum by ceramic artist David Shaner (1934-2002)."Irvin Tepper:
When Cups Speak/Life With the Cup: A 25-Year Survey" is atraveling exhibition organized by the Thompson Art Gallery at San JoseState University in California. Tepper is a fine arts and industrial design professor at the Pratt Institute in New York. The exhibition will include Tepper's ceramic and bronze cups, drawings and photographs ofcups, as well as stories about cups. Tepper's 134-page companion bookwill be on sale at the Museum for the duration of the exhibition.The Museum currently has a limited number of copies of the retrospective book, Robert Turner: Shaping Silence: A Life In Clay by Marsha Miro and Tony Hepburn. The books are on sale for $45. There are also a few ofTurner's pieces included in the current exhibition closing Sunday.A professor emeritus of ceramic art in the School of Art&Design at Alfred University, Turner is a 1949 alumnus of AU with an MFA in ceramic art. He has devoted his life to sculpting and pottery, and educating ceramic artists through AU's international recognized program.
Turner turns 90 years old this weekend.
