1 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of Study

In the process of teaching and learning, especially English, the teachers were asked to design optimal learning so that learning objectives can be achieved.

One way was used effective learning media that can be used by the teachers and students in the classroom. Because media was used by the teacher to transfer the learning messages and information (Daryanto, 2016).

According to Nurrita (2018), learning media played an important role in the learning process. Learning media was a learning resource that can assist teachers to increase students’ insights. The various types of learning media by the teacher can be material in imparting knowledge to the students who learn the new things.

By using a learning media, the learning material is easy to deliver so it can be easily understood by the students.

The competence of designing learning media should ideally mastered by the teacher. The teachers should be able to design the learning media that presenting the material that students need for learning activities with the curriculum as the basis. It shows that the role of the teacher in designing the learning media determined the process of successful learning (Cahyadi, 2019).

In this digital era, there were a lot of learning media that we can find and we can designed for teaching English. If before, the teacher used traditional learning media in the classroom such as paper and whiteboard, meanwhile today, they can enjoy the learning process through mobile phones, laptops, IPad, and other digital

platforms. When the teacher is able to use modern learning media, it will be useful for the students who receive the subject materials (Batubara, 2020).

Based on the preliminary observation that the researcher conducted from the interviews with the English teacher at SMAN 2 Singkep who is the tenth grader English teacher, the researcher found several problems faced by the tenth grader English teacher and also the students. She said during the teaching and learning process, she only used textbook from the curriculum as a learning media. Because the the lack of learning media that she used, the students uninterested due lack of motivation and hard to mastery the materials in learning English, especially in reading skill. Most of the students’ lack mastery in vocabulary.

Based on the students’ needs questionnaire that distributed by the researcher to tenth grader students, it showed that many of tenth grade students at SMAN 2 Singkep thought that English was a difficult subject to undertand and mastery, especially Narrative text. It is because the learning media that they only had was the textbook from the curriculum. Then reffering to the questionnaire, it showed many of tenth grader students of SMAN 2 Singkep need a learning material that can be used by their smartphone.

Referring to the issues above, researcher was interested to designing a new learning media for learning narrative text at tenth grade in the form of Linktree media. The Linktree media was assumed to be developed as a valid and practical learning media to be used during the teaching-learning process. Moreover, the Linktree media was designed with Linktree website with attractive design, elements, and hyperlinks to be linked to the activities. The learning media was

available in online mode, so that the students can be used their smartphone in the learning process.

1.2 Identification of The Problem

Based on the background of the study, the researcher identifies some problem as follows:

1. The students are uninterested due to lack of motivation to learn English.

2. The students hard to mastery the English material, especially reading skill.

3. The English teacher did not have other learning media other than a textbook from the curriculum.

1.3 Research Question

Based on the identification of the problem above, the researcher proposes a research question as follows:

1. How was the Linktree media for learning reading narrative text at grade tenth designed?

2. How were the validity and practicality of Linktree media for learning reading narrative text at grade tenth?

1.4 Purpose of Study

Through the research question above, the research objective of this study can be formulated as follows:

1. To design the Linktree media for learning reading narrative text at grade tenth.

2. To know the validity and practicality of Linktree media for learning reading narrative text at grade tenth.

1.5 Specification of Product

1. The design in the learning media was used Linktree website.

2. The learning media was included with narrative text material.

3. The learning media was equipped with images, elements, and hypelinks to the learning activities.

4. The learning media was accessibled in online modes.

1.6 Significances of Study

This study tried to design linktree media for learning reading narrative text at grade tenth, and to find the validity and practicality of it. The finding of this study is expected to give a contribution as follows:

1. Theoretical Significance

Theoritically, this study is expected to be advanced insights dealing with designing a linktree media for learning reading narrative text at grade tenth.

2. Practical Significance a. Teachers

This study will help teachers, especially English teachers, in designing linktree and they will able to provide the new learning media to their students which to be use during the learning process.

b. Students

The result of this study are expected to facilitate the students in the teaching-learning process. This research made students got and understand the material easily in reading skill especially in the narrative text at grade tenth.

c. Other researchers

For other researchers, it can be used as additional knowledge in further research on the same design.

1.7 Assumption and Limitation

The assumption from the designing linktree media for learning reading narrative text was designed as a valid and practical learning media to be used in the teaching-learning process. The limitation of this study was the design of the linktree media only for one topic of the material taught in tenth grade was the narrative text for one meeting. Because of the linktree media that has been designed and used only for the tenth grader students in SMAN 2 Singkep, therefore the research and development in this study was limited to the tenth grader students at SMAN 2 Singkep.

1.8 Definition of Key Term

To avoid misunderstandings, a classification of some key terms needs to be established. They are as follows:

1. Designing

Designing is a process of planning or creating something.

2. Linktree media

Learning media based on Linktree website with interesting design, elements, and hyperlink to students’ activities.

3. Narrative text

Narrative text is an imaginative story that has a purpose to entertain the readers.
