1 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Problem
Speaking is the one activity to communicate with social to give and get information as stated by Kosar and Bedir (2014) in Sihite et al. (2021) who stated Speaking is an interactive process of creating meaning that involves both giving and receiving information. In this era speaking skill is needed. As we know, there are 4 language skills that at least must be mastered by students. They are reading, listening, writing dan speaking. Among these abilities, speaking skill should be developed and mastered in the English language. According to Arismayang (2016) in Sihite et al. (2021) speaking demands communicative proficiency in addition to pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.
Based on the researcher’s previous interview result with one of the English teacher at SMP Negeri 7 Bintan, many students faced some problem in speaking especially in English. First, students are accustomed to using their mother tongue.
Second, speaking English is very difficult because the students were less of the vocabulary. Third, the teacher usually didn’t speak in English while they were learning English.
A new method is needed to provide a significant effect on their speaking.
The method that has a significant effect in students’ speaking is Jigsaw method.
Jigsaw method is a method to build teamwork and make the individual active in the learning process. This method can be applied to materials that have a
connection with skills, like reading, writing, listening, and speaking. In this method the teacher must understand the skill and the knowledge of the students so it can help the students to actived in the learning process. According to the researcher, jigsaw method is one of the methods that had a significant effect on their speaking so that the student can discuss comfortably and freely. So the students can get the information well and also they can understand the topic.
