INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of Study

Speaking is a complex process, as it involves speech comprehension and speech production, and then the healthy brain does both effortlessly. According to Indah

& Abdurrahman (2008:114) the healthy brain will make easy to communicate well. In communication, there is a process to take mind out (from the brain), in the form of words or sentences. However, they who have the impairment of brain function and speech, it is difficult for them to produce the language, either receptive or productive it is known as language disorder. Scovel (2000; 70) said that language disorder can be caused by some factors, such as hearing loss, neurological disorders, brain injury, intellectual disabilities, drug abuse, physical impairments and vocal abuse, accident, traumatic, or genetic dice.

Further, language disorder is a grouping of disorders that involve problems in communication (Arshi, 2019). This disorder will greatly affect the way of people talk, understand, and analyze of process information. There are many types of language disorders such as childhood disintegrative disorder, pervasive developmental disorder, autism, and Asperger syndrome. In language disorder not only, autism is experiencing adversity but also the condition of individuals with Asperger's syndrome can be detected by the language they use because Asperger syndrome is part of autism. Marganingtyas (2014) stated that Asperger's syndrome is one of the symptoms of autism in which sufferers have difficulty in communicating with their environment, making it less acceptable this is part of

Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia autism where the sufferer has difficulty to have a good interaction with their environment. There are many differences in language used by the people who were born with Asperger syndrome (AS). In pronunciation, people who suffer Asperger syndrome do not have difficulties, but the biggest problematic thing the applied language use in social interaction. Moreover, people who suffered an Asperger syndrome have such common traits as behavior and language, but they have difficulty to communicate with their environment that would lead to misunderstanding in their communication.

According to Attwood (2007) there are 8 types of verbal language problems in individuals with Asperger syndrome there are lack of pragmatics, literal interpretation, odds prosody, idiosyncratic words, sounding the mind, auditory discrimination and distortion, and verbal fluency. Attwood (2007) stated that there are characteristic of someone who experienced an Asperger syndrome such as delayed social maturity and social reasoning, difficulty making friends, difficulty with communication and having bad non-verbally. Asperger syndrome not only occurs in real life but also occurs in literary works. One of the literary works that explain about someone who suffer from Asperger Syndrome is in the movie My Name is Khan, this movie tells about the main character who suffers from Asperger Syndrome.

Rizwan Khan called as Khan someone who suffers the Asperger syndrome, Khan has above average intelligence, and he can remember each English vocabulary.

Khan can speak English fluently with his teacher since he was in primary school.

Khan can associate with other people but it is difficult to communicate with them.

At the time, he gives a text to promote the product such as “use our product, then you will feel glow like a newlyweds bride”, and that phrase he uses whenever he promoted that product, he only talks about the things which he knows (Fox Searchlight, 2010). This movie was released in February 2010 which is directed by Karan Johar. This movie has a good rate in Hollywood and Bollywood.

Therefore, the researcher wants to analyze the language used by the character who suffer from Asperger syndrome in the Movie” My Name is Khan”. The reason for choosing this movie is because this movie tells clearly about someone who suffers an Asperger syndrome. Therefore, this study focuses on the utterances by the main character who suffered Asperger syndrome in “My Name is Khan” movie.

This movie also tells about the restricted interests or features of a person who suffers from Asperger syndrome when he or she communicates with others. This phenomenon inspires the researcher to conduct a study of verbal and non-verbal language communication problem on the character who suffers from Asperger syndrome in this movie.

1.2 Research Question

Based on the background of the study, the research questions proposed in this research:

What are verbal and non-verbal language communication problems experienced by the main character in the movie “My Name is Khan”?

To classify the verbal and non-verbal language communication problem experienced by the main character in the movie “My Name is Khan”.

1.4 Use of the Study

In analyzing this issue, the uses of study are divided into two, those are:

1.4.1 Theoretical Use

Theoretically, the writer hopes this research gives the contributes and additional knowledge in psycholinguistics terms of the study about language problem through the utterances by someone who suffer an Asperger syndrome.

Furthermore, this research can be an effort of enriching the theory of psycholinguistic in the relation of language problem communication.

1.4.2 Practical Use

Practically, the writer hopes this research can be useful for other researchers. It is expected that it can be a reference for another researcher who wants to do similar research.

1.5 Scope of the Study

This study is a psycholinguistic study which focuses on utterances spoken by the main character and also takes a picture related to non-verbal language by the main character who suffers from Asperger Syndrome in this movie. This study will focus on verbal by Atwood (2007) and non-verbal by Gilberg (2002) in language communication problem who suffered by someone an Asperger syndrome.
