For this reason, Cornerstone Baptist Church is committed to training and sending out ministers for the advancement of the gospel and the good of the church. Their love for the preached Word is an important contributor to the current health of the body. Ernst Wendland explains: Rhythm, cadence and sound of words as well as the ability to paint a picture in the mind of the audience are very important to an African American sermon.

The careful search of the black preachers for the precise words and phrases is a constant testament to the importance of rhetoric and the humble circumstances which originally gave a place of primacy to black sermon. All research tools used in this project were conducted in accordance with and approved by the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary Research Ethics Committee prior to use in the ministry project. Finally, the increased ability to defend the importance of sacred rhetoric and to explain the power of rhetoric.

The rhetorical questions found in Isaiah and Job are some of the most powerful and. God's use of rhetoric in his word sanctions the preacher of the Word to do so as well.

Jesus Preaches the Sermon on the Mount

Five of the first twelve words of the first verse of Hebrews begin with the same letter. The rhetoric in this sermon is not merely decorative, but reinforces the crucial semantic content of the message. Jesus', even when used as the subject or direct object of the clause, is kept to the last word.

The nouns eloquence and wisdom described the verbal skills and mental prowess of the speaker. The task of the preacher is to impress the hearer, not with himself, but with the Creator, Sustainer and Savior of the World. The proclamation of the Word of God is fundamental for the church, the individuals in the body and the evangelization of the world.

Therefore, a correct understanding of preaching is essential for the health and growth of the Church. The Bible faithfully warns the preacher that the message of the gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ, is foolishness to those who listen without the working of the Spirit in the heart of the listener. Man persuades with all the sweetness and sweat he possesses, but it is the Holy Spirit who moves the heart of the listener.

Intellect is important and should not be left in the vestibule of the church while the preacher prepares to deliver a message from the Lord. If indeed the scriptures belong to the church and the church cannot abdicate its responsibility in the leadership of those who will interpret those scriptures in the name of the church. The minister must also understand that his labor, apart from the work of the Spirit, is in vain.

Six of the seven men preached from the pulpit at Cornerstone Baptist Church where the class was held. I then asked the students, what is the most common name of the preacher in faithful, biblical, evangelical circles. I then began a discussion by asking questions about the nature of the preacher's task and how it is related but not.

After an opening prayer, the class began with a review of Week 1 and resumed the topic of the preacher as herald. Many of the men have spent much time in the Word, but have not spent time specifically examining the rhetorical devices found throughout. King listened to and learned from some of the greatest black preachers in the country.

American Preaching and created a lively discussion about the power it brings to preaching and how it enables the preacher to build the main point of the sermon and deliver it at the end.

Assess Knowledge of Sacred Rhetoric

Develop Six-Class Curriculum

Increase Understanding of Sacred Rhetoric through Instruction in the Class

The location, timing and meeting space all fit the needs of the class and offered little resistance to teaching. Another similar strength of the class was the relatively uniform philosophy of ministry and philosophy of preaching. Another strength of the course was the time spent listening to, analyzing and discussing certain African American sermons.

Several men said this particular part of the curriculum was the most compelling and persuasive. A final strength of the course was the communal preaching that seven of the eight men heard during the lesson. I could see their reserved excitement and several men even talked about it as they left the last class.

Each of the men in the class preached or intended to preach in the near future, but the class had no opportunity to give feedback on the students' individual preaching. Another option could be to provide feedback on previous recorded messages in light of the curriculum. A second, but not unrelated, improvement could be made to the structure of the course, allowing for the unexpected but extremely useful dialogue and questions that.

Another idea would be to have the students write a sermon for exam at the end of the course. The rest of the project challenged my own preaching and the way I judge preaching in general. Some words were even undefined in the first survey, but were defined at the end of the course.

Preaching is central to the church and the mission to equip the saints for the work of the ministry. With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim's pride, From every mountainside let freedom ring.
