The writer of Hebrews accuses his audience of following traditions of the old covenant that were obsolete in view of Christ's inauguration of the new covenant. Biblical theology allows this individual view of Hebrews and its contribution to the metanarrative picture of. 18 Some people equate the words of the writer of Hebrews with Paul and Peter in 1 Cor 3:2 and 1 Pet 2:2 respectively.

Better Theology”

The problem with both the audience of Hebrews and the modern congregation is a lack of a thorough. The most important question to be answered in literature is, "How does the writer of Hebrews create spiritual maturity in his congregation?" Since the sermon series for this project focuses on Hebrews 5-10, I will review literature that specifically applies to these passages and how the author of Hebrews used the passages to promote spiritual maturity.

Better Priest”

Priest,” asserts Christ's priesthood is the central doctrinal theme of Hebrews.36 Although identifying one center of theology is a very difficult task, commentators such as Bruce, Ellingworth, and Lane agree that Christ's priesthood is the key to understanding the gist of the author's argument.37.

Better Covenant”

Better Sanctuary”

Better Sacrifice”

In all these areas, Eastern Hills isn't that different from many American churches—it needs a revival. Eastern Hills needs the same: deep theology of God's character, a biblical understanding of Christ's personal work, and believers who are committed to the Great Commandment and Great Commission. This is what a biblical theological understanding of the book of Hebrews will do for Eastern Hills.

Hebrews 5:11–6:6—

The next four sermons show Christ's fulfillment of the Old Covenant and the impact his initiation of the New Covenant has had on religious tradition. It reminds believers that Jesus, as the Christ of the New Covenant, is the telos of the religious practices of the Old Covenant. The solution is that the public would trust the New Covenant in the fulfillment of basic points of doctrine (6:2) and go beyond spiritual milk and move on to spiritual flesh (5:14).

Hebrews 8:1–6—

This problem was so serious that the writer told his audience that they were in danger of turning away from the faith altogether (6:4-6).

A BETTER THEOLOGY (HEB 5:11–6:6) Introduction

19 Craig Allen Hill, “The Use of Perfection Language in Hebrews 5:14 and 6:1 and The Contextual Interpretation of Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society 57, no. If Lane is right, then the author's reference to spiritual milk is a shaming mechanism intended to motivate the audience to get over their dull faith. level of rejection.37 The author illustrates his point in 6:7–8: “For the land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it and produces a crop useful for those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God. I have seen your faith in action, so I know you will continue to mature.” The author at this point used very positive language to describe his audience, “beloved.

The author of Hebrews calls for the building of the church towards a better theology. Some churches have used these questionable models of ministry because they genuinely want people to grow in their relationship with God.2 The Bible, however, paints a very different picture of how God grows His church. Scripture provides one way for people to grow closer to God, only one channel connecting man to his creator: the gospel of Jesus Christ revealed in the word of God.

That Old Testament tent was a shadow image of the real heavens through which Jesus went.5 In addition, the writer of Hebrews. The writer explained in 1:3 that, "after Jesus had made atonement for sins, [Jesus] sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high." The purpose of Jesus' sitting is twofold. 15 The Dictionary of Biblical Imagery explains that "the right hand is especially used as a synecdoche to emphasize God's person and actions".

Thus, Jesus is rightly "the source of eternal salvation to all who [obediently] listen to him." Matthew Emadi, “You Are a Priest Forever: Psalm 110 and the Melchizedekian Priesthood of Christ,” The Southern Baptist Journal of Theology 23, no. 1 (spring. In the Letter to the Hebrews the action step is scattered throughout the teaching of Christ as better. the priest - the reader is repeatedly invited to come closer.

A BETTER COVENANT (HEB 8:6-13) Introduction

It is logical to understand Adam as the head of the Creation Covenant in preparation for receiving Christ as the head of the New Covenant. The Abrahamic covenant develops many of the same theological themes found in the Noahic covenant. I will be their God.” The second part of the formula is implied, "you will be my people."19 Abraham's descendants would.

We live under the excellence of the New Covenant (Heb 8:6), a covenant with even greater promises than those given to Abraham. Just as the Abrahamic covenant develops theological themes found in the Noahic covenant, the Mosaic covenant continues the development of the Abrahamic covenant.25 The Mosaic covenant is not directed at one particular person (such as Abraham), but the whole people Israel (Ex 19: 5). In fact, the design of the New Covenant made it possible for Jesus to make atonement for the previously broken covenants.

It is important for the preacher to ensure that his congregation appreciates the rich background of Christ's new covenant. In other words, they were members of the Old Testament who did not know God. The people of the New Testament do not identify themselves by nationality, skin color, or political affiliation.

People in the church are identified by the fact that they have accepted the cup of the New Covenant, which is the blood of Christ shed for them.

A BETTER SANCTUARY (HEB 9:1-15) Introduction

Therefore, in this sermon it makes sense to give a brief overview of the Old Testament meaning of the sanctuary and its ornaments. One of the key features of the sanctuary was the curtain that separated it into two sections—the holy place and the Holy of Holies. The writer of Hebrews was well versed in the Old Testament and Jewish custom, so it is not likely that he was unaware of the traditional placement of the altar.

Within the Holy of Holies, both according to the writer of Hebrews and according to the book of Exodus, was the ark of the covenant. 23 Lane explains, “The Holy Spirit revealed to the writer that, as long as the front. That part of the sanctuary was reserved only for the high priest, only once a year, and only with the blood of a sacrifice (Heb 9:7).

In other words, the writer of Hebrews was referring to the time of the tabernacle, not his present day. As Brevard Childs says: "The writer of Hebrews is concerned to show that the Old Testament picture of the sanctuary is a testimony of Jesus Christ, either in his fulfillment or in his. To approach Christ is to approach God.38 The writer of Hebrews called Christ "the heir of all things".

The author recognized Christ as the fulfillment of the Old Testament sanctuary and contrasted the two.

A BETTER SACRIFICE (HEB 9:16–10:4) Introduction

As in the case of the Abrahamic covenant, the message of the covenant sacrifice was this. Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it in the hearing of the people. Whatever was used in the worship of God had to be purified with the most precious substance, the substance that represents.

10 Morales notes that the blood acted as a cleansing agent for the objects of the sanctuary, cleansing them from the sins of the Israelite worshippers. This distinction is necessary because the writer of Hebrews was building up to the substitutionary death of Christ, as foreshadowed by the death of the animal sacrifice. The result of death was that Adam and Eve would be covered with the shame of their nakedness.

Sin defiles us to such an extent that the only type of sacrifice that can cleanse us must be of the highest quality. Thompson, The Acts of the Risen Lord Jesus: Luke's Account of God's Unfolding Plan (Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity, 2011), 40. 37 The author of Hebrews describes Christ in Heb 1:3 as "the brightness of God's glory and the exact imprint of his nature" as a way of expressing the inseparable purpose and being of God the Father and God the Son.

The author of Hebrews argued that the forgiveness of sins required a sacrifice, and that the once-for-all forgiveness offered in the New Covenant required the supreme sacrifice—the Son of God himself.

THE BETTER WORK OF CHRIST (HEB 10:5-39; 13:1-25)

Erik Raymond, “The Soft Prosperity Gospel,” Ligonier Ministries, accessed February 6, 2020, https://www.ligonier.org/learn/articles/soft-prosperity-gospel/. The apostle Paul explained in 1 Corinthians 15:56-57 that "the sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. The second exhortation, to hold fast the confession of our hope, is a repetition of the writer's earlier ideas that persevere in faith (Heb 6:18).

The author concludes his exhortations by explaining why it is so important to draw near, hold fast, and consider how to spur one another on to good works—“the Day [is].
