THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS’ TIME MANAGEMENT AND THEIR ENGLISH LEARNING ACHIEVEMENT

ABSTRAK

Peneliti menemukan beberapa permasalahan manajemen waktu siswa di SMAN 1 Pulau Punjung, yaitu beberapa siswa terlambat mengumpulkan pekerjaan rumah (PR), pulang sekolah langsung bermain, lupa membawa alat tulis dan membawa buku pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Dari permasalahan tersebut, penelitian inibertujuan untuk melihat apakah ada atau tidak korelasi antara manajemen waktu siswa dan pencapaian pembelajaran bahasa Inggris mereka. Dengan demikian, peneliti menggunakan penelitian korelasi. Populasi dari penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas XI SMAN 1 Pulau Punjung. Ada 2 jurusan di kelas XI SMAN 1 Pulau Punjung ini, yaitu kelas MIPA dan IPS. Total siswa dari semua adalah 241 siswa yang dibagi dalam 8 kelas pada tahun ajaran 2014/2015. Akan tetapi, pada peneliti ini menggunakan semua kelas untuk memilih sample kelas penelitian. Dalam menentukan sample, peneliti menggunakan teknik simple random sampling. Dalam mengumpulkan data, peneliti menggunakan angket dan wawancara untuk melihat manajemen waktu siswa dan skor nilai untuk melihat pencapaian pembelajaran bahasa Inggris siswa di kelas XI SMAN 1 Pulau Punjug. Dalam menganalisa data, peneliti menggunakan rumus Riduwan, yaitu korelasi Pearson Product Moment. Setelah menganalisa data, peneliti menemukan nilai r- hitung adalah 0.819. Hasil dari r- tabel adalah 0.291 dengan level signifikan 0.05 dan degree of freedom (df=n-2). Ini berarti r- hitung lebih tinggi dari pada r- table (0.819 > 0.291. Berdasarkan penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa manajemen waktu siswa mempengaruhi nilai pencapaian pembelajaran bahasa Inggris mereka.

Time management is the way of the students in controlling and managing sequence of activities. Time management of the students can be increased by a variety of skill, media and technique. Besides, it also can give several advantages toward students. The first is time management can increase students discipline. The second is time management can help students get good achievement toward material of teaching.

Furthermore, students achievement is about the students result. It is about their understanding toward test that had been given by the teacher. The test that will be given by the teacher is to find out the achievement of the students whether their achievement good or bad.

To find out the achievement, the teacher will count it by using rubric. The way of teacher in counting the achievement of students based on the skill. For example, listening skill is counted by using rubric of listening for another skill will be counted by using the rubric of the skill itself.

Based on the pre-observation that the researcher did when teaching practice in SMAN 1 Pulau Punjung through interview with some students, there were some problems related to students time management and also students English learning achievement. The first problem related to time management. Some students collected their homework lately because they thought it was hard to do it. Thus, they often postponed to finish it and got low score. Then,

some students often did activities out of their learning. They did not know of their task as a student. Moreover, some students forgot to bring their stationery. It happened because when they came back home, they did not go back to their home but they played with their friends. At night, they felt tired and not ready to prepare their school requirements. Thus, they were not ready to participate in classroom activity. In addition, some students forgot to bring their book because often played mobile phone at night. They did not see school schedule. They just got information from their teacher in the classroom. Therefore, they got poor achievement at the end of the semester.

Furthermore, the problem above got the effect of English learning in their school. Some students comprehended their learning material in the classroom. Moreover, when the teacher gave the students quiz or test, some students read the material at school which they did not care their task. Sometimes the achievement of some students have problem because they did not know what subject and material that will be discussed for that day.

Based on the problems above, the purpose of this research is to find out there is correlation between students time management and their English learning achievement. Thus, the researcher interested to conduct the research about the correlation between students time management and their English learning achievement in SMAN 1 Pulau Punjung.

Time management is a utilization of time with format activity which is done by the student.

In which, according to McCuen (1996:152), time management is essentially of your time in a manner that most effectively help you to meet important goals.

The implementation of time management is really needed by students to improve their time in learning and getting their goal. According to Lakein in McCuen (1996:152), benefit of good time management is that you can gain control of your time. Moreover, Wysocki (2009:33) suggests that there are two components of time management, such as the planning component and the control component. In addition, Lussier (2012:161) recommends several components.

Which are priorities, objectives, plans and schedule.

Achievement is expectation for every student and teacher in teaching learning at school.

According to Gratz (2009:19), achievement is to expand beyond limited academic skills, the

parameters must also be spelled out. Wiersma and Jurs in Aggarwal (2009:273) define that achievement test is a measure knowledge and skills in a content area.

RESEARCH METHOD

This research was a correlation research.

Gay and Airasian (2000:321) explain that a correlation describes an existing condition where it was distinctly from it correlation provide an estimate of just how relation two variables. In this research, the researcher chose SMAN 1 Pulau Punjung as setting of the research. Gay and Airasian (2000:122) state that population is the group of interest to the researcher, the group to which she or he would like the results of the study to be generalizable. Based on the researchthe total of population are 241 students. After collecting the data, the researcher analyzed it. According to Bogdan in Sugiyono (2013:334), data analysis is the process of systematically searching and arranging the interview transcript, field notes and other material that you accumulate to increase your own understanding of them and to enable you to present what you have discover to other.

DISCUSSION AND FINDINGS

Based on analyzed sample classes questionnaire above the researcher found 8 students who had good time management, 3 students who had little well time management, 32 students who had bad time management and 5 students who had very bad time management.

Next, based on indicators time management of result the interview above; there are priorities, objectives, plans and schedule. First, priorities is some students said that did not use their time well.

Second, objectives is some students said that can not balance their time to do activity. Third, plans is some students said that did not have planning of their activity. The last, schedule is some students said that did not have list to do activity but think in their memory. Then, as result, 4student got higher score, it was 84 and 1 student got lower score, it was 48 in English learning achievement.

Based on the data analysis, the researcher found some findings. The first finding in indicators time management was priorities, objectives, plans and schedule. The second finding is the researcher found coefficient correlation between students’ time management

and their English learning achievement was 0.819.

The last, the researcher found r- counted was higher than r- table in the degree of freedom (df) n-2 where the level of significance (α) 0.05 was 0.291. This study was aimed to find the correlation between students’ time management and their English learning achievement at second year of SMAN 1 Pulau Punjung was positive correlation. The result of the research was there was positive correlation between students’ time management and their English learning achievement.

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

Based on data analysis, it was found that there is positive correlation between time management and English learning achievement at second year in SMAN 1 PulauPunjung by the valued of r- counted higher than r- table. The correlation showed that r-counted= 0.819higher than r- table= 0.291. Based on the finding of the research, the researcher proposed several suggestions for teachers, students and researcher.

First, the researcher suggested that the teacher to pay attention for students’ time management in English learning achievement. The teachers can measure between time management and English learning achievement. Therefore, the teachers are expected to support the students to improve their English learning achievement. Moreover, the teacher can also understand that students’ time management must be considered as a supporting for their English learning achievement. Second, the students are suggested to improve their time

management in order to have a good English learning achievement. The last, the researcher would get information about correlation between time management and English learning achievement.
