ABSTRACT

This study was a descrptive research. The purpose of this research to analyze students’ discipline problems in teaching learning process by Students class X SMAN 1 Sungai Beremas in West Pasaman.

In this research took five classes. Sampling technique used purposive sampling. To gather the data, researcher conducted observation in SMAN 1 Sungai Beremas by using research tools such as observation checklists, field note and video tool. The data obtained from the discipline problems, then it categorized based on the level of students’ discipline problems. The result of this analysis were taken 14 of 125 students in class X which followed English study. From the all the data researcher did not found all discipline problem in SMAN 1 Sungai Beremas such as : there were 8 students who got truancy, there were 9 who got absenteeism, there were 5 who got fihting and there was 1 student who got drug/addiction, the student bring a cigarette in classroom.

Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisa masalah disiplin siswa dalam proses belajar mengajar siswa kelas X SMAN 1 Sungai Beremas di Pasaman Barat. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti mengambil 5 kelas. Teknik sample menggunakan puposive sampling. Untuk mengumpulkan data, peneliti melakukan observasi di SMAN 1 Sungai Beremas dengan menggunakan alat penelitian seperti observasi ceklis, catatan absensi siswa dan alat video. Data yang diperoleh dari masalah-masalah disiplin dikumpulkan, kemudian dikategorikan berdasarkan level dari masalah disiplin. Hasil dari analisis ini diambil 14 siswa dari 125 siswa dikelas X yang mengikuti belajar bahasa Inggris. Dari semua data tersebut peneliti tidak menemukan semua masalah disiplin yang terdapat di SMAN 1 Sungai Beremas yaitu : 8 siswa yang tergolong truancy, 9 siswa yang tergolong absenteeism. 5 siswa yang tergolong fighting, dan 1 siswa yang tergolong drug/additions, seorang siswa membawa sebuah rokok kedalam kelas.

INTRODUCTION

Teaching learning process in the classroom can be affective if it is conducted by a good classroom management by the teachers.

Managing student behavior has always been a primary concern of teachers for student misbehaviors have interfered with a positive

learning environment (Shin and Koh, 2007).

In teaching learning process, discipline is very important especially for students. Students do not discipline will be delay teaching learning process. The students who not discipline they not obey of the rule that there in the classroom when teaching learning process.

Discipline in education is very important and one key to achieve the purpose in teaching learning process. Students are priceless assets and most essential elements in education. It is absolutely necessary to direct students to exhibit acceptable attitude and behavior within and outside the school. In an attempt to achieve an organized and peaceful school environment and maintain law and order, school management specifies rules and regulations to guide the activities of members of the educational organization. According to Nakpodia (2010:144) in this school, discipline is necessary for the effective management, if the goals of the schools are to be accomplished. Student discipline is a complicated process, which involves a lot of people all school staff, the students and their parents. It may mean something very different to people from different backgrounds, with different experience.

Moreover, the researcher’s experience when did teaching practice at SMAN 1 Sungai Beremas in West Pasaman, she found the problems in teaching learning process with students discipline. It was found there are problems in teaching learning process, such as truancy, absenteeism, stealing and fighting, resulted in not only the low value of the students in the subjects of English, but the interest and motivation to learn English was decreased, students assume that subjects in English is very boring lesson.

Based on the observation, the researcher found that discipline problems students have many problems in learning process. The teacher said, they get many problem because, the students problem in teaching learning process about truancy, absenteeism stealing, fighting and drug addiction. In general, the first truancy is from of discipline problems that very influence in students’ progress in gets the knowledge. For example truancy student go out in classroom. The second absenteeism is who absenteeism in class they also not get knowledge. For example absenteeism student does no attend school, the three stealing is an adult term that may not mean anything to young children. For example stealing students like to steal other students’

properties. The last fighting is to engage in battle or in single combat, attempt to defend one against or to subdue, defeat or destroy an

adversary. For example students like to fight with each others.

Related to the problem above there are many teachers who have not been able to resolve the issue. If the conditions of teaching learning process this allowed to drag on, it will problems the quality of student learning outcomes will remain low due to the lessons boring and uninteresting. Therefore, the researchers are very interested to do researcher how to solve the problems existing in students or how the right solution so that students can learn well and not cause many problems.

However, Temitayo (2013:3) school discipline is an essential element in school administration. This is because discipline is a mode of life in accordance with laid down rules of the society to which all members must conform, and the violation of which are questionable and also disciplined.

Level of discipline problem

Truancy is irregular attendance in school or classes with many factors within or outside the school building peer group influence, teacher methods of teaching or discipline are some school factors that can lead to truancy.

Absenteeism may result from the type of leadership obtaining in a school. The school exercise greater control over students and may lead students to frustration, if there is insufficient supply of school materials and facilities such as food, water, toilet facilities which may lead to absenteeism or rebellion against authority.

Children fighting at the secondary school level are very low in self-esteem. The chief impetus for fighting during the normal course of classroom and playground life tends to lie in the child’s basic sense of inadequacy and feelings of not being valued or worthy. In other words, the four psychological needs of the child have not been met: the need for love, security, new experience and need for responsibility.

Stealing is the removal of another person’s property without his permission. The socioeconomic environment including status of parents, home background and a natural tendency to steal is responsible for this among students. This conduct is mostly influenced by peer-group pressure. Some parents spoil their

children by exhibiting highly permissive behavior.

Drug Addiction or Abuse is one of the most dangerous and most common school discipline problems. It means taking drug without prescription by the appropriate person.

There is a general moral decadence in this regard because many parents are also guilty of the same misbehavior and are unable to instruct correct, advice or guide children.

Based on relevant researcher above, the researcher concludes that from several findings above, it has also from the background of the problem. The differences of this research with the other research were in identifying the discipline problems. The other researches just identify level of discipline problems. Here the researcher will do research specifically about student’s discipline problems in teaching learning process at X grade of SMAN 1 Sungai Beremas in West Pasaman.

RESEARCH METHOD

These research designs would be descriptive qualitative research, because the researcher trie to analyze the students discipline problems in teaching learnin process. According to Gay and Airasian (2000:10) carries out depth examination of a topic or a problem over a sustained period of time. It means that descriptive research was an activity that is carried in a continuous time which aims to determine the result of a phenomenon or topic. To answer the research questions, the researcher used analyze the of students discipline problems in teaching learning process at X grade of SMAN 1 Sungai Beremas in West Pasaman.

In this research, the researcher used participants as a sample. According to Gay and Airisian (2000:121), participants are group of individual that participants in research. In this research, the researcher was went to find students at X grade of SMAN 1 Sungai Beremas as participants. Researcher chose taught in class X 1,2,3,4,5 and student follow the discipline problems from class X 1,2,3,4,5 to got the data.

In this research, the research used purposive sampling to selected participant.

According to Gay and Airasian (2000:138) purposive sampling is the potential for

inaccuracy in the researcher’s criteria and resulting sample selection. The aim of purposive sampling were to sample a group of people to be the smple to got the data from the students follow the discipline problems.

The researcher needs the instrument to facilitate her in collected the data. It supported by Gay and Airasain (2000:145), explain that instrument is a tool to collect the data. The instrumentation is observation and observation check list. During observation used observation and field note. According to Yusuf (2007:292), “observation is a technique of data collection which investigates both verbal and non verbal activities”. The researcher used the observation to observed students discipline problems in teaching learning process. In doing the observation, the researcher used observation tools that could help the researcher to collect the data accurately. Yusuf (2000:298) says that “some tools that can be used in doing observation are checklist, rating scale, and recording tool”.

The last instrument researcher used document to got the data from the teacher.

According to Arikunto (2010:201) documents was finding the data that use notes, transcripts, books, magazines and newspaper. therefore, the researcher uses the document from the teacher to see the attendant list of the students, the researcher just focuses on first semester of academic year 2016/2017. The researcher uses collected the attendant list of the students.

After the researcher gets the document, it will be analyzes based on students attendant list to know students discipline problems.

In collection the data of this research, researcher used observation checklist, and field note. The researcher does some steps.

First, the researcher came to SMAN 1 Sungai Beremas Pasaman Barat, and ask permission to the headmaster to do the research and collect the data. The researcher used the observation checklist with the teacher some indicators that are related to the study. Second, the researcher enter the classroom and observed the students discipline problems in teaching learning process. Third, during the observation process the researchers had been done do the checklist process and note taking for all students activities. It was doing to made sure the researcher got all of information relates to students discipline problems.

The researcher used document analysis to collected the data. According to Donald Ary (2010: 442) Document analysis can be written or text-based artifacts (textbooks, novels, journals, meeting minutes, logs, an noun cements, policy statements, newspapers, transcripts, birth certificates, marriage records, budgets, letters, e-mail messages,) In this research, the researcher used textbooks Document analysis is one of source of data for collecting the data and information that the researcher need from the sample.

After collecting the data, the researcher analyzed the data (the result of observation).

The data analysis in this research was conducted based on the techniques of analyzing qualitative data by Gay and Airasian (2000:239), they stated that there were four steps in analyzing the data of the research that were reading, describing, classifying, and interpreting.

FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

The researcher described the finding a based on the research question. The research question was what are the of students’

discipline problems that mostly appears in teaching learning process at X grade of SMAN 1 Sungai Beremas in West Pasaman. There were 14 participants who teach English SMAN 1 Sungai Beremas in West Pasaman after she is observation level discipline problems the researcher analyzed that students did not have all the level discipline problems in teaching learning process. In doing the observation, she is used document, observation checklist and field note.

The students discipline problems belong to truancy indicator category, the total students of discipline problem they were 8 students.

The student discipline problems belong to absenteeism indicator category, the total students of discipline problems they were 9 students. The students’ discipline problems belong to stealing indicator category, the researcher did not found student of discipline problems. The students discipline problems belong to fighting indicator category, the total students of discipline problems they were 5 students. The students discipline problems belong to drug/addition indicator category, the total students of discipline problem the was 1 student.

From the truancy, after read the document and observation check list, the researcher found 11 students got student go out of class and never come back, 5 students got student truant when teacher start class and 7 students student got students truant when last-minute lesson. It ments that the students got of discipline problems in teaching learning process. As a result of this research, the researcher answers for the question. The researcher found observation in teaching learning process. It means that the students discipline problems in teaching learning process because the students include truancy.

The researcher concluded that students include indiscipline in class. The observation check list from 1 until 3 belongs to truancy indicator category which asked whether students preferred yes in the observation check list. The total of discipline problems they were 9 students. The sub indicator from number one, the students in yes was 79% the categorized percentage very high. The sub indicator from number two, the student in yes was 29% the categorized percentage very low. Then, for sub indicator number three, the student in yes was 50%, the percentage was medium. It means that, the students include discipline of problems in teaching learning process.

From the abseenteeism, after read the document and observation check list, the researcher found 4 students are often absent from class, 11 students are often late to class and 12 students leave the classroom without permission. It means that the students got of discipline problems in teaching learning process. As a result of this research, the researcher answers for the question. The researcher found observation in teaching learning process. It means that the students discipline problems in teaching learning process because the students have absenteeism. The researcher concluded that student’s indiscipline in class. The observation check list from 4 until 6 belongs to absenteeism indicator category which asked whether students preferred yes in the observation check list. The total of discipline problem they were 9 students. The sub indicator from number one, the students in yes was 29% the categorized percentage very low.

The sub indicator from number two, the student in yes was 79% the categorized

percentage high. Then, for sub indicator number three in yes was 86% , the percentage was very high. It means that, the students had type of discipline problem in teaching learning process.

From the fighting After read document and observation check list, the researcher found 5 students disturb other students, the researcher did not found students bring the dangerous things in the classroom and the researcher did not found students often fight with other students in the classroom. It means that the students got of discipline problems in teaching learning process. As a result of this research, the researcher answer for the question. The researcher found observation in teaching learning process. It means that the students discipline problems in teaching learning process because the students has fighting. The researcher concluded that students had indiscipline in class. The observation check list from 9 until 11 belong to fighting indicator category which asked whether students preferred yes in the observation check list. The total student of discipline problems they were 5 students. The sub indicator from number nine, the students in yes was 36% the categorized low. It means that, the students had type of discipline problem in teaching learning process.

From the drug/addiction, after read and observation check list, the researcher found 1 student bring cigarette to the classroom. It means that the students got of discipline problems in teaching learning process because the student bring cigarette in class. As a result of this research, the researcher find answer for the question. The researcher found observation in teaching learning process. It means that the students include of discipline problems in teaching learning process because the students has drug/addition. The researcher concluded that students had indiscipline in class. The observation check list from 12 until 15 belong to absenteeism indicator category which asked whether students preferred yes in the observation check list. The total student of level discipline problems the was one student.

The sub indicator from number twelve, the students in yes was 7% the categorized percentage very low. The sub indicator from number thirteen, the researcher found in yes. It

means that, the students had of discipline problem in teaching learning process.

From the data above the researcher analyzed that from the observation, the data that had been found by the researcher, it can be seen from the figure below:

Based on the figure above, we could see the types of discipline problems. From 14 participants which have found, there were 8 data which belong to truancy, 9 data which belong to absenteeism, did not found data which belong to stealing, 5 data which belong to fighting type, and 1 data which belong to drug/addiction.

The researcher analyzed and found that the student for discipline problem who got truancy, the researcher found that the student for discipline problems who got absenteeism , the researcher found that the student for discipline problems who got fighting, and the researcher found that the student for discipline problems who got drug/addiction.

Based on the classification above, the researcher that the used of students discipline problems is to give clear and extra information in teaching learning process. The researcher used of discipline problem which have found, actually both of the levels used by the discipline problems in teaching learning process. The researcher analyzed and found that the students discipline problems that got truancy, there were 5 participants got students went of class and never come back, 5 participants got students truant when teachers start classes and 7 participants got students truant when last-minutes lesson. The student discipline problem got absenteeism, there were 4 participants include students are often absent from class, 11 participants got students are often late to class, 12 participants got students leave the classroom without permission. The students discipline problems got stealing, there

was not participant did not include students steal stationary from students and was not participants did not include students steal stationery from teacher. The students discipline problems got fighting, there were 5 participants got students disturb other students, there was not participant include students bring the dangerous things in the classroom and there was not participant got students often fight with other students in the classroom. The students discipline problem belong to drug/addition, there were 1 participants include students bring cigarette to the classroom, there was not participant got students give cigarette to other students, there was not participant include students bring alcohol in the classroom and students bring narcotics in the classroom.

CONCLUSIONS

Based on the data analysis and finding in chapter IV, the researcher found many discipline problems in teaching learning process at X grade SMAN 1 Sungai Beremas in West Pasaman. There were 5 level of discipline problems found in 5 classes. The answered of research question, from 14 participants which have found. First, 8 participants who got truancy. Second, 9 participant who got absenteeism. Thirth, the was not participant who got stealing. Next, 2 participants who got fighting. Finally, 1 participant who got drug/addition. The researcher was concluded that the which mostly used by the students in the SMAN 1 Sungai Beremas is discipline problems as truancy and absenteeism. After that, the researcher found that most of participants got for discipline problems about truancy and absenteeism in teaching learning process.

Than, the researcher opinion about the students, the students discipline problems have behavior indiscipline in class.
