A critical analysis of the exegetical methods used in the feminist margins of the Qur'an explores the relevance of feminist Qur'anic scholarship within the Malaysian context. Critically evaluating Hidayatullah's methods, this study assesses the conception of feminism in adopting a more inclusive and equitable understanding of the Qur'an regarding women's rights. Through close examination of Hidayatullah's work, this research reveals the complexities and nuances of feminist interpretations of the Qur'an, exploring their potential impact on Malaysian society.

By critically evaluating the exegetical methods employed in Feminist Edges of the Quran and their resonance with the Malaysian landscape, this study aims to promote a more inclusive and equitable understanding of women's roles and rights within Islam in Malaysia. Background Research

This overruled the opinion of Qur'anic feminist exegesis that it was the result of the oppression of women in patriarchally constructed societies. On the other hand, in order to strengthen the foundation of this research, I decided to base this research on the previous developments on ambiguity, which are particularly reflected in Ibn al-Jazari, a well-known Islamic scholar who is the recorder and compiler of earlier writing on The past events of the Qur'an and the one to be cited for the latter scholars. As it follows from past events, the presence of ambiguity in the Qur'anic matter was emphasized in the early stage of the Qur'an along with a series of Islamic events.

In his book, al-Jazari explains the urgency of varying readings and the short history of the first codex of the Qur'an during Abu Bakr As-Siddiq's caliphate until the caliphate of Umar al-Khattab, initially, the codex agreed to be in possession from the Prophet's wife as a personal possession to Hafshah, who was also the daughter of the caliph at the time. 1 Johanna Pink, “Review of Feminist Edges of The Quran”, Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, vol. We can see that the aesthetics and uniqueness of this Ilmu Qiraat has gathered the attention of the Western scholars regarding the tradition, indeed questioning the methods of codex of the Qur'an in the Western science about the transmission system, and the controversy of the oral tradition.

In doing so, I think that the book Feminist Edges of The Quran by Hidayatullah offers another side and constructive insight into feminist Quranic exegesis. Similarly, I am interested in looking at the relevance of the unique stance of Quranic feminist scholarship from the book Aysha Hidayatullah with Selangor's Fatwa to the Malaysian context. The intersection of feminist scholarship and Islamic teachings, particularly within the context of the Qur'an, poses intricate challenges and offers potential opportunities for deeper inquiry.

Research Questions

4 In recent years, the exploration of feminist perspectives within the framework of Qur'anic studies has gained considerable global attention. However, when examined within the specific context of Malaysia, this exploration encounters a particular landscape influenced by the dominant stance of religious councils. The main purpose of this research is to thoroughly analyze the feminist study and critical conclusions drawn by Aysha Hidayatullah, seeking to ascertain its relevance within the Malaysian context.

Given that both feminism as a whole in the Malaysian context and Quranic feminist exegesis are themselves interdependent and interrelated. I thought that the study was necessary to reach an adequate and fair understanding in order to deepen and accept the ambiguity in Quranic feminist teaching in Malaysia.

Research Objective

The relevance of the critical conclusions of the feminist Qur'anic exegetical methods with Malaysian context. I believe that this research will encourage further research on feminist or gender in Qur'anic exegesis, for it has been known globally but not accepted positively, especially in the Malaysian context.

Literature Review

6 Next, from the journal Feminist Interpretation of the Qur'an in a Comparative Feminist Setting, also written by Hidayatullah for the journal Feminist Studies of Religion. Hidayatullah traces and re-evaluates some core values from her book Feminists Edges of The Quran, and the reflection of feminist comparative settings in some documents about religious texts.5 I find practical the comparative setting used by Hidayatullah in the second half of her journal and aims to to follow the comparative setting. From the journal "Development of Islamic Feminism in Malaysia" by Indriati Ismail, he examines feminism in Malaysia along its importance and conflicts to the views of Malaysian Islamic and cultural perspectives.7 However, in this journal, its author is only related to the topic of exegesis. Quran generally comments on the use of hermeneutics as an exegetical method.

Hidayatullah, “Feminist Interpretation of the Qur'an in a Comparative Feminist Setting,” Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion, vol. Seksualitas Dalam Al - Quran Menurut Kecia Ali (Studi Penafsiran Qiwamah Dalam Buku Sexsual Ethics Dan Islam).10 Both theses are on feminist Quranic exegetical methods by Fatima Mernissi on hijab issues in relation to the Indonesian context and Kecia Ali on sexuality. questions of the term Qiwamah from her book "Sexual Ethics and Islam". From the research mentioned above, I believe that no one has specifically dealt with exegetical methods in relation to the Malaysian context, especially Hidayatullah's exegetical methods in the book Feminist Margins of the Qur'an.

The primary data used is the book Feminists Edges of the Quran by Aysha Hidayatullah and the fatwa of Selangor. Since this research uses the library research method, the collection of the written data will be compiled from the primary and the secondary data sources that I found essentially related. Using this method, I will be able to examine the collected data and explain the data in the primary source, the book Feminists Edges of The Quran by Aysha Hidayatullah.

Paper Organisation

The focus that will be taken from the book is the critique of Quranic exegesis by feminists. I will technically define the critical analysis of exegesis using the theories that will be decided during the ongoing research and finally I will conclude Hidayatullah's position in the world of feminism in general and specifically in the Malaysian context. This chapter concludes the critical conclusions of the analysis by Aysha Hidayatullah and many other exegetes in the feminist Qur'anic field.

Chapter four examines the potential benefits and drawbacks of feminist Qur'anic scholarship on the feminist edges of the Qur'an in the Malaysian context. This follows with the importance of critical analysis through feminist edges of the Qur'an with the Malaysian context with the essential testimony of fellow feminist scholars on exegetical methods. Mainly, this chapter will discuss the Selangor fatwa and Aisha Hidayatullah's school of thought from her book.

The fifth chapter is a conclusion to answer the questions from the first chapter, followed by suggestions for further research with related or similar settings.

Conclusion

Furthermore, given the existing negative perception of feminism in Malaysia, her extensive research has the potential to foster a more receptive and open-minded environment, encouraging rational and informed engagement with the subject. To answer the main problem statement, I believe that Hidayatullah's concern and motive in writing this book can go hand in hand with the published Fatwa of Selangor. The critical analysis that Hidayatullah concludes in Chapter 3 should be able to reflect the position of the Fatwa of Selangor.
