CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background

Education is a strategic tool to improve quality nation, therefore the advancement of the nation and of the education is a determination. In the process of education in schools, learning becomes spearhead for the creation of quality education. Only with Quality learning is an institution that can produce qualified graduates quality. At the operational level, educators have duties and responsibilities responsible for the implementation of quality learning. For that is very important for educators to have competence and educational qualification standards so that learning to achieve its effectiveness and efficiency.

Many factors cause the low quality of education, including activities learning that is less responsive to the diversity of individuals and the environment where students are. Such learning is less beneficial for students. So that meaningful learning, needs to be designed and developed based on the condition of students as learning subjects and the cultural community in which students live. Students are human beings who have a history, creatures with unique characteristics (individuality). An understanding of the subject of study must be owned by the teacher or staff other educational institutions to be used as a basis for developing theory or educational and learner pratice (Septianti & Afiani, 2020).

(4)

As a teacher must preparing students to attend education at a higher level, of course, requires a teacher who can truly understand each character (student). As educators and lecturers, teachers hold key positions in achieving learning success.Meanwhile, teaching is an attempt to create conditions or environmental systems that support and allow for the learning process. Moreover, if learning belongs to students, then teaching is a teacher activity. If that is the case, in the teaching and learning process, to create successful learning for all students, both in the form of groups and individually, understanding the characteristics of students is a task that is the teacher's responsibility before the process. Therefore, teaching and learning take place in order to be able to understand it by observing and approaching each student directly (Sulkifli, 2021b).

CHAPTER II DISCUSSION

2.1 Defenition of student characters

What are the characteristics of students? Characteristics comes from the word character which Characteristics, disposition, character, and habits possessed by a person whose nature relatively fixed. The characteristics of students can be interpreted as a whole pattern of behavior or abilities possessed by students as a result of innate and environment, thereby determining its activities in achieving goals or the goal. Information related to the characteristics of students is very necessary for interests in learning design characteristics students is one of the variables in the learning design usually defined as the background experience possessed by students including other aspects that exist in them such as general abilities, expectations of learning and physical characteristics as well students' emotional impact on the effectiveness of learning (Safitri et al., 2022).

Student characteristics are special characteristics possessed by each student as individually or as a group, which is taken into account in the organizing process learning (Sulkifli, 2021a). One of the things that educators should be aware of is the qualities of their students, as these features serve as a guide when developing instructional strategies. In order to ensure that students acquire indications of success

(6)

from learning activities, strategic instructions contain methodologies as well as techniques or procedures. Students' characteristics refer to specific traits they possess, and these traits may have an impact on how successfully they complete their learning objectives (Septianti & Afiani, 2020). Analysis of the initial characteristics of students is one way to do this in understanding; Requirements, needs, talents and interests of students. this stage deemed necessary taking into account students, economics, culture, social development, science as well as technology as well as interest in special education programs attended by students.

According to Vygotsky, the design and developmental state of the pupils serving as the learning subjects as well as the sociocultural environment in which the student is positioned determine whether or not learning is meaningful. Important concepts regarding students as individuals that must be understood, in Waidl's opinion, include the fact that they are people with histories, individuals with distinctive characteristics, perpetually in need of socialization, drawn to the natural world around them, and free to develop their own ideas. The development of educational ideas and practices must be based on this concept of students as learning objects. According to Paulina Pannen, if cultural traits of the students are taken into consideration when constructing the curriculum, student learning results will improve (Arifin, 2017).

Each pupil is a learner. Each person has a special talent for self-direction, and teachers have the right to instruct and direct students. The first stage in molding a pupil's character while they are studying is to understand their individual learning profile and draw a picture of what makes them successful. The second step is to

(7)

create a learning environment where the student is the center of attention. In other words, process learning places more of an emphasis on the students as learners than on the teacher (Anwar, 2017). Understanding a student's character, profile, interests, potential, and advantages and drawbacks enables a teacher to function as a capable mentor for that student in accordance with their talent, interest, and potential.

2.2 Methods Used by Teacher To Understand The Characteristics of Students Teacher's Method in Understanding Student Characteristics In using educational methods for students, including understanding their characteristics,it must be adjusted to the size of the age development of students (students),andseveral development measures such as cognitive, language, creativity, emotional and social. Therefore, the method used must consider the ability of students to understand a lesson, allowing children Jurnal Konsepsito interact with each other so that they can meet the needs and interests of students in the learning process. In addition, through the close relationship between students and teachers will be able to develop the teacher's understanding of the characteristics of students. Therefore, in the learning process in the classroom, the teacher always tries to approach each student psychologically so that the teacher can understand more deeply the characteristics of students (Janawi, 2019). Regarding the discussion of student characteristics, based on the results of research obtained by the author, there are several kinds of methods that teachers use to understand student characteristics, including observing the state or ability of students' knowledge levels, student learning styles, family background, personal circumstances and so on.

(8)

2.2.1 Observe The Class’s Level of Knowledge

Being a teacher, according to Pearsons & Sardo, is being willing and able to identify the students you have taught. Understanding children is crucial because each one of them is unique (Janawi, 2019). Observing students' knowledge level In this process, the teacher always observes every child's learning development. In this case, the value obtained in each semester is whether it is better, constant, or even more declining. In addition, in the learning process, when the teacher explains, it can be

observed from students'

attitude in responding to the lessons given. This is related to the ability to think

intellectually and say things related to psychomotor.

2.2.2 Observing The Educational Background and Social Status of Students

In this case, the teacher can ask for personal data from students, such as name, date, and place of birth, address, gender, name of parent/guardian, religion, and so on.

In addition, the condition of the house, such as the work of the mother and father, the number of siblings, th eLast education of the parents (elementary, junior high, high school, bachelor), the atmosphere of the house, and the status of the house, meanwhile in terms of health, for example, disability or living habits. In this activity, the teacher can get a definite picture, especially regarding the state of the house, social status, and student's circumstances, by conducting interviews with both parents and other families, and even neighbors. This is mainly done for students who experience certain difficulties or problems.

Based on the research results obtained from 20 students, their parents' last education was junior high school, and their occupation was a farmer (Anwar, 2017). In detail, it

(9)

can be described that 16 students whose parents graduated from junior high school and whose occupations are farmers, two parents whose last education is high school (1 civil servant and one entrepreneur), and two parents of undergraduate students with work as civilservants.

2.2.3 Observing Student Learning Behavior

In this case, the teacher makes observations on students' behavior to obtain data about the behavior of students. In the process, the teacher pays attention to the results of the lesson and pays attention to the talents, interests, character, freedom, habits, openness, and how each child works. For this to work well, it is necessary to

create a close and good relationship between

the teacher and the student. In addition to observations carried out in the classroom, observations are also carried out outside the classroom because, in informal moments, the true nature of students can be more easily observed. The observations obtained illustrate that students generally prefer the characteristics of learning behavior that are formatted in the form of groups.

2.2.4 Using Attitude Test

In this activity, students can be given various tests according to the objectives or answers they need. For example, the achievement test, which is a test given to determine the mastery of students' subject matter, personality test, which determines

the character of students, and so on.

2.2.5 Using a Questionnaire

(10)

In this case, it is done to find out the personal data of the child or each student, also related to the interests or talents of students. So in the questionnaire, the teacher- designed several questions that could cover all the data needed. The benefits of distributing questionnaires are that the implementation process requires a shorter time

and is more efficient because it can be

carried out simultaneously for all student (Sulkifli, 2021b).

2.3 The Effect of understanding student characteristics in improving student learning.

After the learning designer decided what needed to be learned, an analysis of student characteristics was done. It is further demonstrated that learning management techniques are chosen, established, and developed using the findings of the analysis of student characteristics as a starting point. In this setting, it is more apparent that learning effectiveness research is needed so that scientists, learning technologists, and teachers can use it as a foundation for developing educational initiatives (Septianti & Afiani, 2020).

The Effect of Understanding Student Characteristics in Improving StudentLearning.

Teaching and learning is a process that is carried out with full awareness to make changes to students' mindsets, attitudes, and behavior patterns. However, to realize all of that cannot be separated from the teacher's ability to understand the characteristics of students (Safitri et al., 2022). In the process of this research, after the authors conducted observations and interviews with teachers and students, there were many things that the teacher could benefit from if the teacher\ was able to understand the characteristics of students.

Among the benefits perceived by teachers are:

1. Teachers can easily choose the right method to be applied in the learning process.

(11)

2. Teachers can better understand what can be done for each student who has different

characteristics.

3. Individually, teachers can understand students' habits during the learning process.

4. Teachers can give different treatment to each student because the teacher understands that each learning style that students are interested in is different.

5. By understanding the characteristics of students, teachers can be wiser in making decisions and treating each student (Sulkifli, 2021b).

(12)

CHAPTER III CLOSING

3.1 Conclution

Teachers have a great obligation to themselves, society, and the environment as educators (education). important for the growth of pupils' character.

In the regular learning process, in the classroom, or in the realm of formal schooling, the teacher's function in comprehending the traits of students can be optimized. If the instructor does not have frequent contact with the students, this role will gradually diminish. The learning process will be improved the more the teacher is aware of the child's features. Some of the teacher's methods to understand the characteristics of students namely observing the level of student knowledge, observing the background and social status ofstudents, observing student learning behavior, using attitude tests and questionnaires. The teacher's understanding of student characteristics will benefit students, such as experiencing a change in habits in a positive direction, acquiring learning skills, observing and understanding them, feeling happy and diligent in learning.
