the above species is confined, so far asknown
at present, is the innermostof the SantaBarbaraGroup, and
is cHstantfromthe Californiacoast abouttwentymiles.While on
a short visit to the island in June, 1875, I collected three specimens of the bird in question which, after considerable hesitation, I decided to call califoruica^though
they diflered considerablyfrom
thefew
specimensof thatbird then athand.Since then the
number
of specimens of califor?iica in the NationalMuseum
has so materially increased that nearlyevery portion of its range on the west coast, fromCape
St.Lucas
toOregon,
is represented inthe series.Having
recentlyhad
oc- casion toexamine
the entire collection of Jays, Air.Ridgway
has kindly called
my
attention to the fact that notwithstanding the accession of somuch new
material the island specimensstillremain unique. I therefore hesitate no longerto describe
them
as representinga
new
species.The
insular habitat of tiie birdwould seem
to preclude the possibility of intergradation with the mainland form, if, indeed, theample
material athand
forcomparison
did not negative such an assumption.The

doubtless reached the ishind from the mainhxnd, and being non- migratoiy theircontinued residence under
new
conditions has effectedvery consideralile changesof size and coloration.The
essential differences of the island bird from californica are itslarge size, deepercolors, especially of thebrown
on back,and
theblueundertail-coverts instead of white.With
referenceto its coloration, it is a curious fact that all the colors are
much
deeper than of specimensfrom
the northern counties of California and ofOregon
where, from the presence of deep forests anda heavy rainfall, thecoloration should be darkerthananywhere
to the southward. .Specimensof californica from the mainland, both in California and Oregon, appear tobe remark- ably uniform in coloration. In its blueundertail-covertsinsnla- ris islike xvoodkozisei, but otherwise its resemblanceto thatformis no closerthan to calij'orttica.
Several other species of land birds
were
found to inhabit the island, and doubtless therewere
a considerablenumber
not de- tected in the very hurried search,especiall}- as but asmall por- tion of the islandwas
visited.Specimens were

None
of these, however, sofaras the few specimens testify,show
