L. Abbott.Similar to 0. horsfieldi, but has a smaller bill, longer wing, somewhat brightercolors, ismoreheavily mottledabove, andhas a difl'erentwing formula. According to Seebohm the "second primary is intermediate inlengthbetweenthefifthandsixth, or sixth and seventh" in 0. hors- fieldi*,which statementagreeswitha specimenintheNational
Museum
collection; the fourthand fifthprimaries are equal andlongest. In the
new
formthesecond primary fallsbetween the third and fourth, with the thirdlongest, thusagreeingwith 0. varia.Length (in flesh), 267
mm.;
wing, 142; tail,93; tarsus, 34; culmen, 23(bill,fromgape, 30.5): "Iris, dark brown; feet, pale brownish fleshy;bill, dark horny brown,palefleshybeneath atbase."
The
wingof 0. horsfieldi is given as 138mm.
