“Developing English Reading Material For Pondok Pesantren, (A Developmental Study at Pondok Pesantren

Al-Kautsar Al-Akbar North Sumatera)”

Abstract

Pesantren (Boarding School) is a unique educational institution. Not only because of its existence is already done long time ago, but also because of the culture, methods, and networks that were applied by the religious institution. Teaching English in Pesantren uses any kinds of reading materials; unfortunately it does not help the students comprehend the English reading materials well. The objective of this study was to developed a model of English reading materials for the students of pondok pesantren modern Al-Kautsar Al Akbar North Sumatera Medan, which are suitable with the needs of the students of the tenth grade to comprehend English textbooks, then they are more motivated to read textbooks in their subjects. The subject of this study is the tenth grade students of pondok pesantren modern Al-Kautsar Al Akbar in North Sumatera Province. The theory was used in this research deal with the concept of reading, reading comprehension, levels of reading comprehension, the schema theory, the communicative approach in teaching reading, the theory of model development and method of evaluating reading instruction. The research method used developmental study by using both quantitative and qualitative descriptive analysis technique. The instruments are used consist of questioners and interview guidelines for students, teachers, and experts. The findings show that the students need English reading materials which are relevant to their major content subject for this purpose, the materials are taken from the textbooks of their major content subject. The materials were developed based on the student need and in line with the syllabus. The result of this research is hoped will be used by teachers and student who teach and learn English in Pondok Pesantren.
