Distribution of the
Eussian
thistle inNorth America —During
thepast thirty years
the Russian
thistle, Salsola kali tragus, hasbeen
in-troduced over
awider range and has covered
the infested territorymore thoroughly than any
otherweed
inAmerica has
everdone
inthe
same
length of time. Prickly lettuce,Lactuca
Scariola, has a rec-ord
for rapid distributionwhich approaches
that of theRussian
thistlebut the prickly lettuce
was introduced
as early as 1863, while theRus-
sian thistle
was not
here until ten years later.Even
theCanada
thistle
which was abundant enough
inVermont
a centuryago
tobe
proscribed
by law
as anoxious weed,
hasnot
in ahundred
years cov-ered
much more ground than
isnow occupied by
theRussian
thistle.The data being
collectedregarding
the rapid distribution of thisweed
willform an
interestingchapter
in the history ofweeds
in thiscountry.
The accompanying map shows
the distribution of theRussian
thistleas indicated
by
the reports received at theDepartment
of Agricultureduring the
past three years, corrected toOctober
30, 1895. If theplant
has been discovered
inany
localitynot
indicatedon
themap,
theundersigned would be
glad to receive a report of it;and,
if inany
local-ity there indicated the plants
have been
exterminated, a report of thefact
would be doubly acceptable.— Lyster H. Dewey, Washington, D. C
