PREFACE:
In
preparing this Catalogue, at the request of theSmith-
sonian Institution,forthebenefitof thosewho wish
toexamine our
native Orthoptera, Ihave adopted
a purely alphabeticalarrangement. The
list isnot
inany
sense asynonpuical
one, involving the expression of pereonal views, but
ahand-book
for the student, inwhich
is collectedevery
reference toany
speciesof Orthoptera
stated tohave been found on
the conti-nent of North America
or in theWest
Indies—
aground- work upon which he may
erecta superstructureof
hisown.
It
would be
difficulttoextend
itsscopeand
retain uniformity of designwithout making
itacomplete
synonyraicallist,scarcely differingfrom an index
toan
elaborate monograjih,and
necessi- tating nearlyall the laborwhich
thatwould
require.Such
amonograph
Iam
preparingfor theSmithsonian
Institution,but
the earlier publicationand
distributionof
thislist willassistme
toobtainmaterial for
my
pm'pose,and
further the interestsof
science,by
calling attention to this neglectedgroup of
insects.The
list furnishesan index
to the exactnames given
to the insects in the original descriptions; ifan author
has described thesame
species, at different times,under
different generic or specificnames, although
confessedlysynonymous,
theywill notbe found
together,but
distributedthrough
thebook
in alj^habetical order; so, too, the species ofLinne and
Fabricius aregiven under
the ancientgenera
inwhich
these authors placedthem and not under
themodern
onestowhich they have
sincebeen
referred.When an author
hasused
sub-genera, retaining the genericname
in connectionwith
the specific, as Burmeister,De Haan and de
Saussurehave
frequently done,tlac S23ecific will
be

of thedif- ferent species, willbe found

Great
painshave been taken
to give thelocalitiesinfulland
toinclude inthe listallreferences to
such
generallocalities as"America"

itwas
uncertainwhether

intended.References
to "meridional"Amei'-
ica are alsoincluded,because
authorshave
frequentlyembraced
in this
term Honduras and
other parts of CentralAmerica.
I
have excluded every
casewhere no
reference tomy
fieldwas made, even
ifsubsequent
investigationsproved
that theinsect occurred within those limits or thename
itselfsuggested

instance of this kind. Stoll' figured the insectunder

by

Ihave omitted

thesequence
of authoritiesunder each

a chronologicalarrangement
hasbeen
attempted, biitworks quoted from
