DIVERSE MOSQUITO LARVAE THAT PRODUCE SIMILAR ADULTS.

In going over
somewhat
carefullythe material inCulicid larvas that has been gathered by Dr.Howard
tobe figured, the writers havemet
inmore
than one instance with diverse larvae that pro duced adults so similar that they have not been differentiated with the materialnow
athand.As examples we
cite:Culex cantans Meigen.

What we
haveconsidered as thenormal
form has the air tubeaboutthree-and-a-halftimesaslong aswide,the pecten con sistingoftwo rows
ofteeth with thedistaltwo
or threedetached.The
tracheal tubes are broad, band-shaped, slightlywaved
seg-mentarily, broadened within the air tube.
The
longabdominal
hairson segments3 to6 are single; the hairs on the head are in tufts of
two
or three centrally, five in thetuft next the antennae.2.
The
second form has theair tube about four timesas long as wide, the pecten of evenly spaced teeth without any detached.The
tracheal tubes are very narrow, uniform, strongly bentseg- mentarily, especially in abdominalsegment
7,where
theyform acute angles, likewisenarrow
within the air tube.The
long ab dominal hairs on segments 3 to 6 are double; the hairson
the head havethree to four hairs in the central tufts, about nine in thetuft next the antennas.Both
forms have been taken at Springfield, Mass.,by
Dr. Geo.Dimmock
andMr.
F.Knab,
in temporary pools in fieldsand woods formed by
the meltingof thesnow
in the spring.There must
betwo
species here in spite of the apparent simi larityof the adults.Culex restuans

The
usualform has theair tubeabout three-and-a-half times as long as wide, slightly fusiform, strongly tapering to the tip, furnished with about six scattered hairs, coarse, single, only the one nearest the tip sometimes inthe form of a small tuft.The
anal processes
may
bemuch
elongated.2.
The
otherform has the tube about four times as long as wide, slender, not fusiform, gradually tapering, the only hair a small tuftbeyond
the outer third. Otherwise, as in the usual form, the antennasand
the peculiarly shaped labial plate being the same.Both forms have been taken at

The
differential characterwhich
he mentionsbetween
the labial plates of thetwo
forms is,however, not existant in our specimens.
These
forms are,we
think, not specifically distinct, aswe
havesome
specimens that indicate an intergradation ofthe characters.Culex impiger

usual form has theair tube about two-and-a-half times as long aswide, thick, taperedoutwardly, thepectenfollowedbv
a singletuft.Anal segment
with slight tufts before the barredarea.
The
lateralcomb
of the Sthabdominal segment
consistsofa large patch of small spinesoverthree
rows
deep.On
the headthe
upper
frontal tuftconsists ofsix hairs,the lower ofthree, the one near the antennae of seven.2.
The
otherform has theairtube of thesame
proportions, but the pecten Iras three or four large detached teethwhich
extend wellbeyond
the tuft, almost to the apex of thetube.There
are besideson
the ventral aspect,two
small tufts andtwo rows
of long tuftson
the dorsal side.The
analsegment
has ventraltuftsalmostto thebase.
The
lateralcomb
of the Sth abdominal segment
consists ofa small patch oflarge, thorn-shaped spines inan irregulardouble row.The
head hairs have three in the upper frontal tuft, one in the lower, seven in the tuft near the antenna;.The
firstformwe
have abundantly irom Kaslo, B. C.,fthe second
form from Kasloalso,and
from Springfield, Mass.,where
itwas
collected by Dr. Geo.Dimmock,
under thenumber
2173.At
presentthe adults have not been separated; but in this casewe hope
that theymay
yet prove to be distinguishable, forour bred seriesof the second form is very small and not well preserved. Better material
may show
differences.The
